Chapter 2 Whispers of the Coming Black

Adrian Chapman walked quickly through the streets of London. He was still thinking about what happened the night. Eating Marcus Hales powers had moved him up to E rank. He knew it was just the start. The Black Tower would appear in two days. Every hour counted. He didn't want to be weak like time. This time he would move up the ranks slowly getting power by taking risks and getting rid of problems before they became big.

He wore the Ring of Minor Eclipse on his finger. It had an energy that felt like a second heartbeat. He got it from a shop that morning by scaring the owner and showing off his shadow powers. The owner gave it to him without asking questions after Adrian made a wooden crate disappear into darkness.

System Notification: Ring of Minor Eclipse equipped. Shadow Manipulation skill upgraded from Basic to Intermediate. Mana efficiency increased by 25%. New ability unlocked: Shadow Step (short distance teleport through shadows cooldown 30 seconds). Rank progress: 42% toward E-rank threshold.

Adrian tried out his ability in a quiet alley. He stepped into a shadow. Came out twenty meters away behind a dumpster. Using the ability didn't drain much of his mana but he knew he needed to get better at recovering it. In the Tower it was important to balance attacking, defending and keeping your powers strong.

He looked at his stats while walking.

Adrian was happy with his stats. He headed to a research facility on the edge of the city to meet Thomas Riddler, the Mad Scholar. Thomas was important because he made relics that helped people on high floors of the Tower. Adrian wanted Thomas on his side.

The facility wasn't guarded well. Adrian used his Shadow Step to get past the fence. Slipped inside through a ventilation shaft. He snuck into the lab where Thomas worked. Thomas looked exactly like Adrian remembered: hair, stained coat and curious eyes.

"You're early " Adrian said, stepping out of the shadows. "The Tower is coming soon. Your work with mechanics will help us move up."

Thomas turned around a scalpel in hand. Put it down when he saw Adrians shadow aura. "You're interesting. Your powers suggest you've already started eating others abilities. Tell me more."

Adrian explained how the Towers power system worked. "We start at F rank. Move up by killing monsters eating relics or getting abilities like mine. E rank gives us mana control. D rank lets us specialize. My ability lets me take powers from enemies forever. Join me. We'll move up fast. Black Eden will reward us if we level up quickly."

Thomas laughed excitedly. "A brotherhood of forbidden knowledge? I'm in. My skill lets me analyze dungeon mechanics instantly. Together we can beat the system."

They tested their alliance by fighting minor shadow imps in the lab basement. Adrian used his shadow powers to restrain an imp.

Devour initiated.

The imp disappeared into energy, which went into Adrian.

Stat gain: Agility +3, Mana +5. New fragment: Minor Shadow Resistance. Overall rank progress +8%.

Thomas analyzed the wave. "Their weak point is in the core 12 centimeters below the sternum. They spawn more when mana is disturbed."

Adrian changed his strategy using Shadow Step to move and strike at the core. Thomas helped with daggers that exploded on impact. They cleared thirty imps with Adrian eating twelve for gain.

Updated Stats: Strength 35 Agility 47 Mana 68. Skill evolution: Shadow Manipulation now allows tendril weapons.

Tobias Ohon arrived at the facility following the mana trail Adrian left. The Bloodhound entered cautiously his instincts active.

"Brother " Tobias said. "I tracked the residue from night. More activity here. Street-level awakened are forming groups but they don't know how the system works."

Adrian nodded respectfully. "Good work. Your tracking will help us find high-value targets to level up. We'll train together now. The power system rewards parties that work together."

Tobias joined them in the basement for practice. They simulated monster waves using Thomass training dummies with curses. Adrian showed off his Devour ability. Explained the mechanics.

"Each absorption adds permanent stats, but overuse without recovery risks curse buildup. Balance is key. Tobias, your Crimson Predator grows stronger with each confirmed kill. Focus on sensing mana signatures to predict spawns."

Tobias practiced hard destroying dummies with strikes. His senses sharpened after every hit.

Tobias Rank Update: F to E. New passive: Enhanced Predator Sense (detects hidden threats within 50 meters).

The three spent hours refining their approach. Adrian shared knowledge from his life: Floor 1 would feature goblin waves with increasing difficulty. Clearing them efficiently could grant bonus relics. He emphasized stat allocation.

By evening they established a base in the facility. Adrian reviewed a map of known early Tower entrances. "We enter together. I will manipulate monster waves using shadows to funnel them for optimal Devour opportunities. Thomas, analyze floor mechanics live. Tobias, track elite spawns for priority kills."

A system announcement interrupted their planning.

Global Warning: Black Tower manifestation in 36 hours. Initial floors emphasize survival and adaptation. First Floor Monarch expected on completion of wave events.

The news was suspenseful. Strange seismic activity happened worldwide. Governments declared emergencies. Adrian knew this was the calm before the test. Henry Sheldon had already gathered followers displaying holy light to position himself as a savior.

Adrian planned one outing that night. A group of thugs had awakened fire abilities and were terrorizing a warehouse district. The trio moved in.

Tobias scouted ahead with his Predator Sense. "Twelve targets, brother. Three with mana signatures indicating E rank potential."

Adrian led the assault. Shadows engulfed the area creating confusion. He Devoured the leader first a fire user whose abilities transferred partially.

Devour success: Fire Resistance fragment acquired. Mana +8. Progress to D Rank: 67%.

Thomas threw calculated bombs that weakened groups. Tobias finished targets his rank climbing steadily with each confirmed kill.

Back at the base Adrian reflected on their power growth. His stats had improved noticeably in one day. This pace would allow him to dominate floors. Tobias had proven reliable, as a battle brother. Thomas added the intellectual edge needed for relic optimization.

Yet Adrian sensed twists approaching. The Towers floors evolved based on climber actions. His early interference might spawn Monarchs.

As midnight approached distant thunder rolled across the sky. Black fissures appeared faintly in the clouds. The world held its breath.

Adrian stood at the window. "Tomorrow we secure relics and test our limits. The climb begins in earnest. Stay strong brothers. We will conquer what others fear."

Tobias clapped him on the shoulder in camaraderie. "I stand with you. The power we build today saves us tomorrow."

Thomas grinned while sketching designs. ". The data we gather will break the Towers rules."
