Chapter 5 Making friends - Monet
My schedule is packed so much that I hardly get time to text my new crush. I don't want him thinking I'm not interested, so I promise to meet him for dinner in the quad later in the week.
I knew choosing Physics as a major would kick my ass, in the best way. Besides, James is probably very busy too with training, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind much.
I unblocked the asshole Cole, only so he wouldn't go running to Mom like a snitch. I don't even know why, because it's not like he's calling, or even texting me.
It's like the brother I knew back home no longer exists. I thought things would be like how we always were when I got here, but Luke is the only one still treating me the same.
I'm too busy to care about anything Cole related anyway.
"We should probably get like a study group together, right?" A voice says above me as I'm packing my laptop and notebook in my bag.
"Excuse me?" I look up into a pretty face.
"Study group? Looks like this major is going to become a tad bit difficult." She sticks her hand out. "Amy. Valedictorian of my senior class, but it probably doesn't mean shit around here."
I chuckle, shaking her hand. "Monet. Valedictorian, and yes to the study group."
"Do you mind if we keep it a two-way?" She scrunches her nose and looks around us. "I don't want any weird boys trying to look up my skirt."
I laugh, and get up, slinging my backpack over my shoulder. "All boys are weird."
"I like you already."
"Although I did meet a really cute one. I think I like him."
"Bleh." Amy sticks her tongue out at me as we walk from the lecture hall. "I've decided to stay away from all things related to a penis. I'm even considering going the lesbian route now. Women are less problematic."
"Please don't tell me I'm your first prospect."
"You do have a great ass in those Daisy Dukes." She shoves her shoulder with mine, making me laugh. "Since this is university and we're supposed to explore our sexualities and make questionable decisions, how about a party on Friday night?"
"A party? Wow. And the semester just started." I shake my head. "No offense, but I'm not much into the whole partying scene. I certainly didn't become Valedictorian by going out."
Amy tugs her black hair behind her ear and winks at me. "All work and no play can make us boring girls. Come on Monet! You're like the first girl in Physics who looks like she can pick up guys with a swish of her hair. We have to monetize on our looks while we can."
I look at Amy for a beat before I burst out in laughter. "My mother would love you!"
She beams like it's the biggest compliment she's ever received. "See, I'm already parent approved and she hasn't even met me yet. I need a certified sidekick and I choose you!"
This girl is going to give me a six-pack with the way she's making me laugh. "Okay, but if there are disgusting guys who are drunk and smells like weed, I'm out of there, okay?"
Amy slings her arm over my shoulder like we haven't just met. I really like her. She's funny and seems exactly like the kind of girl I should hang around with. Mom always said I should loosen up a little. A party can't be that bad, right?
It turns out Amy and I share the exact same schedule, so we sit next to each other in classes. She's really my type of person, because while she's very outspoken, she's very focused in class too, only saying witty things on our way to the next class and in the time we stop at the quad to have lunch. And of course Luke is there, and ready to terrorise me.
"Stinker." He takes a seat next to me, smiling at Amy. "Who is your friend?"
"Amy, this is Luke."
"Are you seeing someone?" He asks immediately.
"Eeuw Luke! She's my friend, find another cleats chaser, there are hundreds just waiting for you." I shake my head at him.
Amy smiles at me, clapping her hands together. "Aauw, that's so cute. Why's he calling you Stinker?"
"Do not tell that story!" I point my finger at Luke, my ears burning in embarrassment. "I promise you, Luke, I will literally kill you!"
"But she's your friend, what's a fart story between the people we love?" He tries very hard not to burst out laughing.
"Now I really need to hear this." Amy says encouragingly.
"Okay, so we went to the movies once, we were like nine years old and Monet was seven, but she always tagged along." Luke proceeds with the story anyways, and I bury my face in my hands. "But she had a sore tummy, and didn't say anything because otherwise she'd miss out. We were watching the movie, and this girl was just farting the whole time. It smelled like the sewerage system in there!"
"I can not believe you just told her that." I say from behind my hands.
Luke laughs like it happened yesterday. "Everyone was asking, who is farting, what is going on, and Cole got up in the middle of the movie, stood up on the seat and said he was a master farter for the day. And guess what happened?"
"What?" Amy wants to know.
"Everybody just laughed, and watched the movie, but I named Monet our little Stinker then."
"Worst day of my life." I peek from behind my hands at my new friend who is laughing at my very embarrassing ordeal.
"Who is Cole?" She wants to know.
"My brother." I smile, thinking back on how he always stood up for me when we were kids. So where did things possibly go wrong?
