Chapter 7

"Drones?"

"Looks like someone's confessing their love again today!"

At Zenith, using drones for a love confession wasn't exactly rare anymore, but whenever someone actually spent that much money to create such urban romance, it still made people envious!

Rebecca was astonished. The dots of light in the night sky, after careful calculation, kept rearranging themselves into an image of a family of three.

"You and Oliver will always be the most important people in my life."

Rebecca's eyes burned, and tears spilled down her cheeks. All of this left her both thrilled and panicked, feeling unreal like a dream.

"William, after everything you’ve done, can I take it that this relationship isn’t just my one-sided wishful thinking anymore?"

"Rebecca, what happened back then, we were both at fault, but marrying you—I've never regretted it. These past few years, if you hadn't taken care of the family and Oliver, how could I have put all my energy into work? It was never just your wishful thinking."

William held Rebecca's hand and handed her a tissue to wipe her tears. "I hope you can trust me."

"I trust you. I've always trusted you."

"I know this might kill the mood, but can you promise me something?"

Before today, she had felt her marriage was cold. Tonight, his efforts to please her, his thoughtfulness, his humility all surpassed anything before.

"Go ahead."

"Celeste only has one month left."

Rebecca's expression changed instantly.

"So?"

Her tone turned cold almost immediately, and all the emotions she'd felt just moments before faded by half.

William's expression was truly awkward. He was clearly someone decisive in business, yet Rebecca had already seen too many sides of him today that shouldn't belong to him.

"Don't tell me you're proving exactly what I said on the way here?"

Rebecca lifted her wine glass and took a small sip. Seeing William's reaction from the corner of her eye, the wine became especially bitter. She laughed bitterly, and said, "Really?"

"Rebecca, although I only have family feelings for Celeste now, when we were young, we did have feelings for each other. If it weren't for—" William's words were cut off as Rebecca continued for him.

"If it weren't for that night five years ago, if it weren't for that accident, if it weren't for my appearance, you two should be together. All the beautiful and perfect words would be used to describe you two. Right?"

"Rebecca, Celeste doesn't have much time left."

William's brow furrowed slightly. Rebecca looked at him, watching quietly for a while. Just when William thought she would refuse, Rebecca readily agreed.

"Fine. I have no objection."

She raised her glass and clinked it against William's. "This is my way of thanking you for everything you did tonight. I should continue being a generous wife."

William felt relieved. "Thank you. For this one month, no matter what people say, I hope you understand in your heart that it's all just for show."

"I understand."

William felt especially at ease now, because this good-tempered Rebecca was the Rebecca he knew—the one who always took good care of him and Oliver at home. That Rebecca at the hospital the other day, all prickly and defensive, was just a fluke.

Rebecca kept a faint smile on her face. Watching William's relief, her smile grew even deeper.

She really should thank William for tonight, thank him for arranging all this, for fulfilling all the fantasies from her youthful crush, and for letting her see those fantasies completely shattered.

At that moment, William’s phone rang again. He looked at the screen, his brow furrowing. He silenced it and flipped the phone face down. Rebecca saw it but acted as if she hadn't, eating Zenith's premium cuisine.

But William's phone kept ringing, call after call, each one making William irritated. Rebecca wiped her mouth. "Answer it. Youthful bonds are more precious than anything, aren't they?"

Rebecca's tone was gentle, so much so that William didn't catch any of the mockery mixed in. He only thought Rebecca was truly moved by what he'd done today and therefore understood him.

Of course, he also became more certain of one thing—Rebecca was still like before, soft-hearted and gentle, easy to control.

He answered the phone. Rebecca looked out the window, already able to hear Celeste's crying coming through the phone by William's ear.

"What's wrong?"

"William, I'm alone at the hospital and scared."

"Alone? Where are your parents?"

"Something came up at home, so they went back. I had another MRI today, and I feel terrible now. Can you come keep me company?"

William glanced at Rebecca and said firmly,

"Celeste, I'm sorry, I really can't come today."

"Are you working?"

"There's a lot going on at the company today. I really can't get away. I'll come see you tomorrow, okay?"

"I'm sorry, William. I'm disturbing your work. Go ahead with what you're doing, I'll hang up now."

Celeste hung up just like that.

William put down his phone. The moment he looked up, Rebecca’s cold gaze met his, unsettling him. When he looked again, he only saw calm gentleness.

"Not going to keep her company?"

"We agreed that no one could disturb us today."

William took the initiative to refill Rebecca's wine. Just as he finished pouring, a message popped up on William's phone. He glanced at it briefly, then grabbed his phone in alarm and hurriedly made a call.

"Celeste is about to do something desperate again!"
