Chapter 5: "I've Decided to Divorce Him."
Emma's POV
"No!"
I screamed and sat bolt upright in bed, my entire body drenched in cold sweat.
My heart pounded wildly in my chest.
Before my eyes, I could still see that blinding crimson and Nancy's vicious face.
"Emma? Emma, what's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
Daisy was startled awake by me. She hurriedly turned on the bedside lamp, looking at me with concern.
The light dispelled some of the darkness, but I still couldn't stop trembling.
"I dreamed about Klaus and Nancy..."
I hugged my arms around myself, fear evident in my voice.
"They were going to kill my baby..."
Daisy immediately embraced me, comforting me like a frightened child.
"You just had a nightmare. None of it was real."
Just a dream? But that pain, that despair, felt so real.
So real that even now I felt a sharp, cramping pain from my abdomen.
"Ah..." I clutched my lower abdomen as cold sweat slid down my forehead.
"What's wrong? Does your stomach hurt?"
Daisy immediately became anxious and helped me lie down.
I nodded weakly.
"Emma, listen to me."
"You're pregnant now. Your emotions will directly affect the fetus's health. You absolutely cannot get agitated anymore. You must keep your emotions stable."
But that dream, like a bloody prophecy, kept replaying in my mind.
I can't tell Klaus I'm pregnant!
Otherwise, that terrible dream will surely become reality.
He'll ruthlessly kill my child, just like in the dream.
A thought appeared crystal clear in my mind.
"Daisy."
I grabbed her hand like it was my last lifeline.
"I've made up my mind."
"I'm going to divorce him. I won't tell him about the baby's existence. I'll give birth to him and raise him on my own."
"After the divorce, I'll go somewhere no one can find me."
"By then, Klaus will have Nancy, his new Luna. He won't care about his ex-wife anymore, much less the baby in my belly. Only then will my child be safe."
Daisy was silent for a long time, her expression complicated.
"You've already decided?"
"Yes." I answered definitively.
"Alright! Emma, whatever decision you make, I'll support you."
Daisy chose to stand by my side.
Perhaps because I'd cried myself out, I drifted into a hazy sleep in the second half of the night.
When I woke again, it was already bright outside.
Daisy didn't have to work at the hospital today.
Seeing I was awake, she asked, "Does your stomach still hurt?"
I slowly shook my head.
"That's good. Rest a bit more. I'll make something to eat. Now that you have a baby, you can't go hungry."
I lay in bed, watching sunlight stream through the gaps in the curtains, yet I felt no warmth at all.
Gently, I placed my hand on my flat abdomen.
This was now my only reason to keep living.
Daisy came out of the kitchen carrying fried eggs and bacon. I propped myself up and walked to the dining table.
A television hung on the dining room wall, broadcasting the morning news.
The screen suddenly switched to a live broadcast from a banquet.
The hall was brilliantly lit, filled with people in formal attire.
The broadcast title was painfully glaring: Golden Moon Pack Alpha Makes Public Appearance with Female Companion.
In the center of the shot, that all-too-familiar figure walked forward slowly, his arm around a petite woman.
It was Klaus.
The woman beside him was Nancy.
The knife and fork in my hands dropped heavily onto the plate with a harsh sound.
"Don't watch, Emma. Turn it off quickly."
Daisy noticed my distress and immediately reached for the remote control.
But I pressed down on her hand. "It's fine."
I shook my head, my eyes fixed on the screen, my voice hoarse.
"I'll have to face it sooner or later, won't I?"
On the television, Nancy gazed up at Klaus adoringly, standing on her tiptoes to whisper something in his ear.
Then Klaus smiled too.
A tender smile appeared on his face, one I had never seen before.
His hand curved around Nancy's waist with undisguised possessiveness and affection.
So he wasn't naturally cold. He simply didn't smile for me.
"What does she think she is! Nothing but a homewrecker stealing someone else's husband!"
Daisy's face flushed red with anger as she cursed indignantly. "Emma, you're so much better than her. Don't be sad or feel inferior."
I said nothing, but memories flooded my mind.
Every time there was an important banquet like this, I would ask him expectantly if he could take me along.
And he would only look at me with cold, contemptuous eyes.
"Emma, do you want all the reporters and citizens to know that my Luna is a worthless wolf-less creature?"
The word "worthless" was like a brand I could never escape.
In all the year I'd been married to Klaus, I'd lived in the shadow of inferiority.
I desperately tried to do everything perfectly, wanting to earn his approval.
But the harder I tried, the more humble I became.
Now, watching him on television with Nancy, so intimate, seeing that unfamiliar smile on his face, I suddenly felt none of it mattered anymore.
I didn't need to humbly beg for his love anymore, nor did I need to feel inferior about not having a wolf.
I could even accept the reality of divorcing him.
Perhaps our marriage had been a mistake from the very beginning.
I thought of Klaus's grandfather, that loving yet dignified Alpha, the former leader of the Campbell family.
On the day I married Klaus, he held my hand and said to me solemnly:
"Emma, my judgment is never wrong. You and Klaus are meant to be together."
I'm sorry, Grandfather. I miss you so much.
I'm going to disappoint you after all.
"Bzz... bzz..."
My phone's ringtone interrupted my thoughts.
It was my adoptive mother, Sally.
As soon as I answered, her sharp, harsh voice pierced my eardrums.
"Emma! Have you seen the television? What's going on with Nancy and Klaus?!"
"You're his wife! Why would he attend a gala with another woman?!"
I didn't dare tell her the truth and could only lie.
"Mom, let me explain. I haven't been feeling well lately and couldn't accompany Klaus to the event, so he found a new companion at the last minute."
"Not feeling well? I think you're just useless!"
Sally's voice became even shriller, full of disappointment and reproach.
"You can't even hold onto your own husband and let another woman steal him away. You've disappointed me so much."
She paused.
"You've been married to Klaus for a year now. Why haven't you gotten pregnant yet?! Is your body just for decoration?"
"I've been trying my best." I gripped my phone tightly, my palms slick with sweat.
Sally snorted coldly and issued a direct order.
"Tomorrow I'm taking you to the hospital for a thorough examination! We'll check you from head to toe! I want to see exactly what's wrong with your body!"
