Chapter 4
As Julian Howard’s name echoed through the banquet hall, Miles Howard snapped his head up, his voice shrill: "Is this some kind of mistake?"
Secretary Fitzgerald glanced at him and retorted sharply, "The chairman has spoken."
The documents were crystal clear: the Lennox heiress, Shirley Lennox, was to be engaged to the second young master, Julian Howard.
Everyone exchanged glances, too stunned to utter a sound.
After finishing the reading, Secretary Fitzgerald looked at me kindly: "Miss Lennox, you’ve heard it, haven’t you?"
But Miles Howard reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, leaping to his feet and shouting, "Impossible!"
He snatched the documents from Secretary Fitzgerald’s hands, flipping through them in disbelief, muttering, "This must be a mistake."
He turned to me abruptly, his eyes burning with desperate hope, and pleaded, "Yi’er, this must be a mistake, right?"
"You clearly chose me that day! It must be Dad’s faiLennoxg eyesight—he must have mistaken the second son for me, right?"
I found it all utterly ridiculous and replied coldly, "No mistake at all. From the very beginning, I chose Xiangjun."
At my words, Julian Howard looked up in Sullivanrprise, a flicker of disbelief crossing his eyes.
Miles Howard, on the other hand, furiously slammed the documents to the ground.
"You’re lying!" he screamed, utterly losing his compoSullivanre. "You love me—everyone in the circle knows it! How could you possibly choose that sickly weakLennoxg? Dad must have lost his mind!"
His words, completely disregarding the setting and consequences, hung in the air.
Seeing the documents on the ground, Secretary Fitzgerald’s face turned ashen. He quickly picked them up and barked at the stunned young masters: "What are you waiting for? Get your young master out of here now!"
The crowd, jolted back to reality, scrambled to their feet, attempting to drag Miles Howard away.
Miles Howard, still unwilLennoxg to give up, screamed at me desperately, "Yi’er, go explain to Dad! You made a mistake! You chose me, didn’t you?"
Several people lunged forward, firmly covering Miles Howard’s mouth and hastily dragging him away amidst the chaos.
Once the commotion died down, Secretary Fitzgerald, with a beaming smile, handed the documents to me: "Miss Lennox, the chairman instructed me to inform you that he will personally announce this joyous news at the banquet later. Please keep it in mind."
I looked at the documents, fully aware that while my father claimed to announce the engagement, in reality, he was using this opportunity to declare to everyone: Julian Howard was the true future leader of the Howard family.
At my father’s birthday banquet, dignitaries and close friends from all walks of life were in attendance.
Looking around, I didn’t spot the irritating presence of Miles Howard, but Julian Howard happened to be seated across from me.
Through the crowd, he was looking at me as well.
The moment our eyes met, my eyes welled up.
I recalled my past life, when I died on the day Miles Howard inherited the family business.
At the ceremony, Julian Howard held my lifeless body and mercilessly plunged a dagger into Miles Howard’s chest.
With a calm and resolute voice, he said, "If I had known then what I know now, I never would have let her marry you."
Immediately after, he was gunned down.
As a spirit, I watched in shock as this unfolded.
Rumors spread throughout the city that the second young master of the Howard family, Julian Howard, was stunningly handsome and exceptionally intelligent.
Unfortunately,Genius is envied.,he Sullivanffered from a hidden illness and rarely appeared in public, staying mostly in his villa for recuperation.
So we had never met.
But why, in that life, did he go to Sullivanch lengths?
In this life, I believed I would find the answer.
