Chapter 2
The person asked me in surprise, "Olivia, why? Aren't you two in love?"
His words left me silent.
Before Amelia came back, Joseph and I really did have a good relationship.
In our five years of marriage, he remembered every single one of my birthdays.
Joseph would carefully remind me when I went on missions: "Olivia, make sure you stay safe."
When I got injured, he would scold me while tenderly treating my wounds.
I fell hopelessly in love with Joseph. I thought we could keep loving each other like this forever.
But Amelia's return a year ago changed everything.
Joseph became someone I didn't recognize anymore.
I didn't dwell on the past. After hanging up, I started packing things away.
Photos of Joseph and me, countless couple items we owned together.
I threw them all out.
Just then, my phone rang. Joseph left me a brief message:
"Come to the hospital quickly."
My heart leaped with joy. Had Joseph finally discovered something happened to Samuel?
Without thinking twice, I dropped everything and drove to the hospital.
I was in such a rush that I even got into a small car accident on the way.
My legs were covered in scrapes. I limped to the hospital room Joseph mentioned.
My heart was pounding. I was afraid of seeing him injured, but the moment I opened the door, I saw Joseph tenderly feeding Amelia porridge.
My hand on the doorknob turned slightly pale from gripping too hard.
The draft in the hospital corridor hit me, chilling me to the bone.
Seeing me arrive, Amelia laughed cheerfully in bed:
"Joseph, she actually came! Alright then, I forgive you."
Joseph smiled helplessly, coaxing her: "So will you cooperate with your treatment now?"
"Of course."
Their conversation confused me. Seeing my blank expression, Amelia explained with bad intentions:
"I said I wanted to see if you could get to the hospital in ten minutes. I didn't expect you'd actually come. Joseph was right—you really can't live without him."
She walked up to me and said in a voice only I could hear:
"Idiot, do you see it clearly now? Joseph loves me most. Why don't you get lost in your position as his wife?"
Her words made my chest tighten. Even the injuries on my legs seemed to mock my stupidity.
I let go of the doorknob and slapped Amelia hard across the face.
"If no one's going to teach you manners, I think I can do it on your parents' behalf."
Amelia glared at me furiously, then threw herself into Joseph's arms, crying:
"It hurts so much! No one's ever hit me like this in my whole life. Joseph, you have to get revenge for me, or I'll never talk to you again!"
I watched her performance quietly.
After Joseph calmed her down, he walked straight toward me.
I looked up at him, only to be met with something I never expected.
