Chapter 3
His palm landed heavily on my face, shattering all my expectations of him.
"Olivia, you really disappoint me!"
My head was buzzing. It took me a long time to see Joseph clearly in front of me.
I winced and forced a bitter smile:
"Joseph, we're done."
I saw Joseph frown. He bit his lip hard.
After five years of marriage, I knew this meant he was anxious and panicking.
He wanted to say something, but crying Amelia called him over.
Just as I was about to leave, Joseph suddenly stopped me:
"Leave your necklace behind."
"Amelia likes your necklace. You hit her, so the necklace will be her compensation."
I touched the ruby necklace around my neck and looked at him in disbelief.
He knew perfectly well this necklace was the only thing my mother left me!
My mother was also a police officer. She died during a mission. The only thing she left to my father and me was this necklace.
Once, when I accidentally lost the necklace, Joseph searched with me in the pouring rain for six whole hours.
He knew how important this necklace was to me, and now, for Amelia's sake, he was asking me to hand it over!
"Impossible! Don't even think about it!"
I clutched the necklace tightly, refusing through gritted teeth: "Besides, she insulted me first!"
Hearing my words, Amelia immediately ran out looking hurt, but fell because she moved too quickly.
Joseph instantly got angry: "Enough, Olivia! Today you lied to me just to compete for attention, and now you dare to falsely accuse Amelia! You're completely stubborn!"
"A woman like you who would curse her own father's death doesn't deserve to wear this necklace!"
As he spoke, he forcefully pried my hands open.
He roughly tore off my necklace, and the rubies scattered all over the floor.
My neck was immediately cut and bleeding.
"No! My necklace!" I screamed and knelt on the ground, trying to pick up those rubies.
Amelia's foot stepped on my hand: "Sorry, Olivia, I was just trying to help you pick up the necklace."
She smiled wickedly and kicked the largest ruby downstairs.
"Joseph, the necklace is broken. I don't want it anymore."
Joseph coaxed her like a child, without a trace of blame in his voice: "You're just being naughty."
Then he looked down at me from above:
"Consider this a small punishment. Apologize to Amelia, and we'll let this go."
"Apologize?"
I grabbed Amelia's ankle tightly with my other hand, then, with force, I pulled her down to the ground.
I stood up, holding those rubies, looking at Amelia grimacing on the ground and Joseph's furious face, with an unprecedented calm on my face.
"Joseph, you'll regret everything you did today."
"Also, I'll send you the divorce papers. Please make sure to sign them."
Amelia was still lying on the ground, screaming.
But I couldn't be bothered to look at her anymore.
I gathered up all the rubies, then went to the police station lobby.
Orders from above had been issued—tomorrow I would start my undercover mission.
My superior, Timothy King, saw my swollen face and injured leg and asked with concern:
"Olivia, are you okay?"
I smiled and shook my head: "I'm fine, just minor injuries."
I took the envelope he handed me, which contained the new identity that I would use starting tomorrow.
After tomorrow, I would completely give up my current identity and go undercover alone in the serial killers' hideout to avenge those fallen officers.
Timothy sighed. Since learning last night that I was divorcing Joseph, he'd been confused.
I didn't explain. This was just a private matter between Joseph and me. I could handle it myself.
But just as I was about to leave, I heard a heated argument at the station entrance.
