Chapter 6 Six
Calista's POV
It was the same rogue that told my father he was going to die after the attack.
I stood outside the dungeon behind the one-way glass window.
I watched as Ray punched the asshole in the guts countless times, trying to get something useful from him but all he got was that he was paid to kill my father.
He claimed to not know who paid him but I didn't believe him.
He made a remark about how my father might have suffered from the poison before he finally died, hoping to provoke Ray to end him but he failed.
For five years, we kept him. This wasn't the time to get rid of him.
I promised my father and the pack to find out the truth and I would.
I would make him talk.
The names.
That was all I needed.
Ray understood my gaze and immediately let go of his throat.
He punched him hard in the face and he settled back in the only seat in the room with a bloody face.
Nose bleeding and growling painfully.
Ray stepped out of the dungeon and stood beside me with bruised and bloody knuckles.
" He knows more than he is given." He wasn't asking.
It has been five years since my father passed.
This filthy rogue has been in this dungeon for five fucking years yet we haven't gotten anything from him.
Among the rogues that attacked the pack that night, he was the only one that fall into our hands alive.
" What do we do with him?" Ray asked, and I turned to look at him.
" We find a way to make him speak" I said and Ray nodded.
Five years and I had no lead on who was behind it.
The poisoning. The attack and the death of my father plus his beta and a few pack warriors that didn't survive that night.
" I will leave it to you." I turned to leave.
" Calista," Ray called and I stopped.
" Don't give up. I will do my best." He said and I turned to walk away.
Ray and I had a close childhood.
We were barely fifteen when he left the pack for school and only returned after my father passed.
He was just a few months older than me.
And I trusted him.
As I got to the entrance of the mansion I picked up an unfamiliar scent in the air. It wasn't a rogue scent.
But I was sure I hadn't smelled it before. I frowned slightly as I pushed the door open.
" Calista, dear. You are home." Grandma asked as she came to hug me." I'm glad you are here..." She murmured and I shut my eyes breathing in her warm scent.
She has been like a mother to me since my parents passed.
Her present meant everything to me." He didn't give any valuable information, Grandma." I said sliding my eyes open.
" It still feels like five years ago," I murmured and she pulled back.
" Don't push yourself. Calista." She said with a sad smile.
" Your father is already proud of you," she added proudly.
" I know you want to find him peace by bringing justice to his death but you are already doing your best." She praised.
" My best is not enough, Grandma," I said back and she let out a sigh.
I promised him. I gave my word to find whoever was behind his death.
I owe him and the pack that much.
" The moon goddess will guide you." She brushed my hair with her fingers.
An unfamiliar scent lingered strongly in the air. It was just like the one I perceived outside.
I turned my head only to notice a man standing on the stairs. Not far from us.
He seemed to be in his early fifties.
He somehow looked a bit like my father.
Was I seeing things or was it actually who I thought it was?
Darius Rucker?
" That is your uncle Darius," Grandma said and I narrowed my eyes. Not surprised.
I have heard little about him from Grandma, of course.
My father never once talked about him and the reason was obvious.
" Calista." He stepped closer with a look that nearly matched my father's.
He looked a bit like him but the difference was clear as daylight.
" I have heard a lot about you and how you have been taking care of this pack." He said it like I was intruding.
His eyes met mine for a brief moment before they dropped to my knees.
" You look exactly like your mother." He forced a smile.
I knew he wasn't lying because I have seen my mother's pictures and my father used to tell me that a lot.
" I have heard that a lot," I said and his fake smile widened.
" Did anyone also tell you you are getting older and need to find yourself a mate?" He questioned and I stilled for a moment.
" Where is yours if I may ask?" I tilted my head to the side and his smile froze.
The air stilled.
His friendly mask wore off and his real face appeared.
Darius. He wasn't just my father's younger brother but also his rival.
I know enough about him to know why he was here.
" Dinner is served and I'm sure you are hungry especially you, Calista." Grandma interrupted and he broke away.
His steps are taking him to the dining room.
Grandma urged and we followed.
" That is the Alpha's seat," Grandma told him when he was about to sit on my seat.
I sat down while he sat across from me at the long table.
Grandma was at my right.
The tension in the air was still boiling.
Anyone could tell it.
Darius and I kept glaring at each other as an omega served me first.
His scent was everything my father warned me about.
A power-hungry animal.
His wolf was as corrupt as him.
The omega finished serving me and went over to serve my grandma before going to serve him.
A small smile curled at the corner of my lips as I noticed the displeasure in his eyes.
He wasn't here to make up for the past twenty-seven years that he was gone but to claim what was already claimed.
" So which pack have you been living in?" I broke the silence.
My voice intentional.
My father told me he went rogue after the elders accepted him as alpha.
And from the look of things he was never a rogue.
His smell was like that of a pack wolf. His eyes flashed gold showing his wolf.
" In-between packs." He replied and I nodded knowing he was lying.
" And why are you here?" I held his gaze.
" In the crystal pack?" I demanded and a slight growl slid out of his throat.
My wolf flashed in my eyes as my alpha aura smoked the air.
