Chapter 2 2
Maisie's Pov
I took Xavier's silence as a cue to continue. “Aria was diagnosed with The Red Howl curse. I don't know how it happened but…”
My face blanched when Xavier's throaty laugh filled my ears.
My brows knitted in confusion. “Xavier, what are you…”
“You really expect me to fall for that?” He scoffed. “So that's how low you'll stoop to get my attention? Grow up, Maisie!”
It was my turn to scoff. “You think I'm childish?”
“Yes!” He growled.
“Xavier, our daughter's dying!” I snapped.
“You goddamn liar! You're always lying about everything, aren't you?” He hissed.
My stomach lurched. This again.
Xavier always believed I was trying to manipulate him into thinking we were mates chosen by the goddess. For some reason behind my understanding, he couldn't feel the mating bond between us. I'd always felt it. I'd felt every spark, every pull, everything that made us mates but Xavier claims he doesn't. It baffled me into thinking that maybe he was lying or maybe, he genuinely didn't feel anything.
I could feel his disgust crawl through the phone as he growled again. “Don't ever call me when I'm working again!”
My heart leapt to my throat. “Xavier…”
“I told you I wanted a divorce!” He cut me off before I could get a word out. “That’s the only thing I want to hear from you, not this nonsense about a sick child. You know you don't belong in that house now that Kylie is back.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as they trailed to the reports lying on the table.
The truth became as clear as day. Xavier never wanted me even when we were mates, especially now that Kylie was back.
There was no use fighting anymore. There was no use defending a marriage that didn't exist in the first place. The only reason I fought was because of Aria and Aria was…
A sob burst through my lips and Xavier snapped. “Enough with the fake tears! I won't fall for your stupid mind games.”
“Fine!” I wiped my eyes with my free hand. “I'll sign the divorce papers but on one condition.”
He fell silent as if shocked. I bet he was. I always told him ‘no’ when he'd forced me to sign them so seeing me willingly agree to it was a surprise.
“Which is what exactly?” he asked calmly.
“Come to Aria's birthday party. Be the father she needs. That's the only thing I'm asking you.” I sniffled.
Xavier fell silent before mumbling. “Is this another trap?”
“No.” I shook my head. “It's the only condition.”
He thought hard for a moment before agreeing to it. “If that's all then I agree to your terms. When is this birthday anyways?”
My heart clenched at the fact that he didn't even remember his own daughter's birthday.
“A month from now.” I replied softly.
“Good. Come to the office to pick up the divorce papers. After which, you can sign them when it's time.” he said.
A bitter smile crossed my face. He already had the divorce papers waiting. It was almost like he couldn't wait to get rid of me.
I knew he hated me and he didn't hide it either. Whenever he came home, he wouldn't hesitate to remind me that I'd tricked him. That I'd gone to his bed at his lowest like some whore and took advantage of him but we both know what was far from the truth. At least, I do. But Xavier wouldn't want to hear that from me or anyone.
All he knew was I'd taken advantage of him during his heartbreak and used my pregnancy to tie him to me.
At that time he was hoping to marry Kylie when she returned but his mother refused. She made him marry me before her death.
And now, Kylie was back, he wouldn't hesitate to get rid of me.
After making sure Aria was comfortable, I took my car and drove to Xavier's office.
Jonah, Xavier's secretary, snarled upon seeing me. “Better hurry up with whatever you want to do. Kylie is on her way here.”
I forgot to mention that Jonah hates me too. No one connected to Xavier liked me.
I nodded with a tight smile. “You don't have to worry about anything, Gavin. I'm not here to beg your boss for love. I'm accepting the divorce.”
A sly grin curled around his lips and he nodded. “Good. At least I won't see your face any longer.”
I turned away from him without a word and walked in the direction of Xavier's office.
As I approached the door, I heard Xavier speaking with someone from inside his office.
“Now that Kylie's back, what do you plan to do?” Beta Gavin asked him.
“Now she's back I'll do all I couldn't do all along which is to make her mine,” Xavier answered almost immediately. “Kylie has a son and they both need my help.”
I froze at the door. “What?”
“Kylie and her son need you but what about Maisie and her daughter? Don't you think they need you too?” Gavin asked.
Xavier's voice turned arctic. “Don’t you dare mention the name of that manipulative bitch here!”
I knew he hated me but for him to mention it to someone else made my broken heart break all over again.
“What are you even saying, Xavier?” That's the mother of your child!” Gavin scoffed.
“So?”
“So?” Gavin sighed. “You mean to tell me that after five years of marriage, you don't have feelings for her?”
“Precisely,” Xavier said. “Everyday, I wish I'd never met her. She came into my bed. My father died and got pregnant. Then, she went on to manipulate my mother so we would get married.”
“Xavier…” Gavin gasped.
“It's true,” Xavier's voice was stern. “Kylie is the one I truly love and nothing can convince me to think otherwise.”
A tear slipped down my cheeks but I wiped them with the back of my hand and opened the door.
