Chapter 7
I had to speak to Brandon. The enigma surrounding him held the key to the answers I desperately sought.
Approaching him, I was about to open my mouth when a familiar voice sounded behind me. "Aili, hold up. Can we talk?"
I turned to see Nick standing there, his expression a mix of concern and confusion. "Nick, I—"
He cut me off, his voice urgent. "I saw you heading towards Brandon. What's this about?"
I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "I just... I feel like he knows something I need to know."
Nick's brows furrowed. "Aili, you're not seeing the bigger picture. Brandon's got a criminal record. He's not someone you want to get involved with."
Before I could respond, I noticed Brandon's eyes on us, his gaze intense. He had overheard our conversation, his expression unreadable.
Nick stepped closer, his eyes locked on Brandon. "Listen, I know you're new here, but Brandon's trouble. You need to stay away from him."
The tension in the air was palpable, the impending clash between them threatening to erupt. But before things escalated further, the principal's voice shattered the moment. "Alright, that's enough. Return to class, all of you."
As the crowd dispersed, I felt Brandon's gaze linger on me, his silent message echoing in my mind.
"Meet me."
The rest of the day passed in a blur, marked by the usual high school dramas. Lisa's skepticism followed me like a shadow, while Samantha's steadfast loyalty shielded me from the whispers and stares.
Dinner at home was strained, my frustration at my father's secrecy bubbling to the surface. "Is there something you're not telling me?"
His eyes hardened, his façade unwavering. "Aili, what are you talking about?"
My grandmother intervened, her voice stern. "That's enough, Aili. Show some respect to your father."
Frustration gnawed at me as I retreated to my room, but my determination remained unshaken. Once the house fell into silence, I knew what I had to do.
Slipping out into the night, I was driven by an impulse I couldn't ignore. The shadows seemed to embrace the darkness around me, guiding me toward the enigmatic figure of Brandon. As my footsteps carried me closer to him, I could sense that the mysteries surrounding him were darker and more thrilling than I could have ever anticipated.
In the heart of the moonlit forest, I rendezvoused with Brandon, just a stone's throw away from my house. The ambiance was a symphony of rustling leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl, an eerie reminder of the mysteries we were about to unravel.
I took a deep breath and began to recount my recent encounter to him, the sense of darkness and dread palpable in the air. "Brandon, I need to tell you what happened after we spoke earlier. I went to the restroom, and I sort of blacked out. It felt like the very shadows were clawing at me."
Brandon's intense blue eyes bore into mine, a hint of familiarity and intrigue in his gaze. "Shadows, huh? Just like the ones at the party?"
I nodded, appreciating the fact that he was taking this seriously. "Yeah, just like that. It was scary as hell."
He let out a low whistle, his gaze momentarily lost in thought. "Sounds like you've got yourself quite the predicament, huh?"
I bit my lip, trying to process everything. "Yeah, that's one way to put it." I smiled shaking my head, this was crazy.
His lips curved into a half-smirk, a mixture of understanding and nonchalance in his expression. "You know, my sister, Lily, went through something similar. Town folks dubbed her 'crazy Betty' and shipped her off to an asylum. They thought she'd lost her marbles."
Sympathy tugged at my heartstrings as I imagined the ordeal Lily had endured. "What happened to her there?"
A flicker of anger danced across his features, a fire in his eyes that matched his determination. "She got locked up, labeled as a nut job. But I know better. I believe she was tied to something bigger, something out of the ordinary."
A chill ran down my spine as I contemplated the implications of his words. "Are you saying she encountered the same shadows?"
He nodded, his tone carrying a sense of urgency. "Yeah, just like what you're describing. And I'm not about to let people think she's loony when I know she's not."
I reached out, placing a firm hand on his arm, my resolve unshaken. "Brandon, count me in. I'm here to help."
Surprise mingled with something akin to respect danced across his features. "Seriously?"
With a nod, I met his gaze squarely. "Absolutely. Let's dig into Lily's experiences and whatever the hell is happening to us. Maybe by uncovering this weirdness, we can shed some light on what's going on."
His eyes held mine, a mixture of gratitude and something more potent shining through. "Aili, I never thought—"
I cut him off with a playful smirk. "Yeah, yeah, spare me the emotional talk. Let's just say you're not entirely what you seem."
He chuckled, the atmosphere around us lightening. "Glad you see it that way."
"Maybe we can visit Lily and she can tell us more about this. About her visions and encounter with the shadows." I said with wide eyes then I realized maybe he wasn't ready for that "I mean only if that's okay with you of course"
He nodded "I think that would be a great idea. We could get more insight from her, hopefully they haven't drugged her too much. That's what's making her lose her shit" he said with a hint of anger in his voice.
I was hoping the same thing because if she is full on those drugs we wouldn't be able to get much from her let alone accurate information. I prayed that wasn't the case"Maybe we could go this weekend without school in the way"
"I will pick you up" he said and I nodded with a smile.
