Chapter1
"Chloe, listen to me. If you wire me $5,000 right now, then when the apocalypse hits next month, you'll qualify for access to the system safehouse. You might even awaken a special ability. Please—just trust me this once!"
My hands clenched the edge of the tablecloth as I stared desperately at my girlfriend across the table.
Earlier that afternoon, a glowing blue virtual panel had suddenly appeared in front of me:
[Apocalypse Survival System Bound]
The rules were absurdly simple. There were exactly thirty days left until a worldwide zombie outbreak. Anyone who transferred me $5,000 would be marked by the system as a Trusted Person, granting them permanent access to the safehouse and a chance to awaken a random survival ability.
The first person I thought of was Chloe, my girlfriend of three years.
For three straight years, I had given her everything willingly. She practically controlled my entire paycheck. I couldn't even scrape together five hundred bucks on my own. I wasn't trying to take her money—I just needed her to transfer it to me from her account so the system would register her and lock in her spot.
What I got in return was a sharp, exaggerated laugh.
"Leo, have you fried your brain working all that overtime?" Chloe swirled her wineglass with fingers tipped in glossy red polish, the contempt on her face impossible to miss. "You want five grand so badly you're making up apocalypse nonsense and superpowers now? Why not just admit you're short on rent this month?"
"No, Chloe, I'm not asking to keep your money. I can send it right back. It's just a required step to activate the system—" I lowered my voice and tried again.
"Oh, enough, Leo." Sitting beside her, my almost-mother-in-law, Mrs. Miller, rolled her eyes like she was looking at something stuck to her shoe. "We invited you to dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant, not to sit here and listen to you lose your mind. Five thousand dollars? You're a salaried nobody. Sounds to me like you've gone crazy over money."
"Seriously, man," Chloe's younger brother Derek added with a sneer. "If you're that broke, go stand on a corner with a cardboard sign. That'd still be less embarrassing than this. Superpowers? What, you think you're the chosen one now?"
Laughter erupted around the table.
People at nearby tables turned to look. Even the servers shot me curious glances, like I was dinner and a show.
My face burned like I'd just been slapped over and over in public.
I looked at Chloe—the woman I had adored for three years, the woman I had put on a pedestal.
Now she was leaning back in her leather chair, staring at me like I was some pathetic clown performing for her amusement.
"I'm going to wash my face."
I shoved my chair back, lowered my head to avoid the stares around me, and hurried toward the restroom.
I twisted on the faucet and splashed icy water onto my face. When I looked up at the mirror, I saw a man with dark circles under his eyes, hollow cheeks, and a worn-out expression that barely looked human anymore.
For the first time, even I started to waver.
Had I really just snapped from nonstop overtime and stress?
I let out a bitter laugh. Five thousand dollars for a ticket to survive the end of the world. Yeah. It sounded insane.
The moment I reached for a paper towel, a shrill alarm exploded inside my head.
[Warning! Host has begun doubting the system's authenticity. Forced immersive simulation activated. Destination: World state, 30 days after the apocalypse begins.]
The bright restroom lights went out instantly.
The clean tile walls around me melted away like wax under a blowtorch. In their place came a stench so thick it nearly made me vomit—blood, rot, and decaying flesh all crashing into my nose at once.
My eyes flew open.
I was standing in the middle of a ruined street.
The sky overhead was a sick, hopeless red. Cars burned in the distance. Severed limbs and mangled bodies were scattered across the pavement.
Then I heard it.
A low, guttural roar from behind me.
My whole body locked up as I turned.
It was a man—or what had once been one. Half his face had been torn away. His eyes were cloudy white. His lower body dragged behind him, with half his intestines spilling onto the ground. On all fours, he stared straight at me and lunged.
"Get away from me!"
I tried to run, but my legs wouldn't move. It was like my feet had been nailed into the asphalt.
Just as those filthy blackened claws were about to rip into my throat, the entire world shattered into countless streams of blue data.
[Simulation complete. Host is advised to begin stockpiling survival supplies immediately.]
[Countdown: 29 days, 23 hours, 45 minutes.]
I gasped for air, both hands gripping the sink so hard my knuckles turned white.
It was real.
The stench of rotting flesh. That scream. That crushing, hopeless terror. None of it had felt fake.
The apocalypse was really coming.
My heart pounded against my ribs.
No matter how Chloe and her family had humiliated me just now, I still couldn't stand by and watch the woman I'd loved for three years become monster food a month from now.
I had to try one more time.
When I got back, I'd use her phone if I had to. I didn't care how. I was getting that $5,000 transferred.
I wiped my face, pushed through the restroom door, and strode back toward our private dining room.
But as I passed a dim, tucked-away lounge area near the back of the restaurant, a familiar voice stopped me dead in my tracks.
"Mark, not here... my mom and my brother are still inside eating... Leo is here too..."
Chloe.
Ice flooded my veins.
Through the gap in a half-closed decorative screen, I saw everything.
Chloe was pinned against the wall by a tall man in a tailored designer suit. His head was lowered as he kissed her neck greedily, shamelessly. And not only did she not resist—her arms were wrapped tightly around his neck, her eyes half-lidded, her voice soft and sweet in a way I had never once heard from her.
"That broke idiot still hasn't left?" the man called Mark said with a laugh, his tone dripping with contempt. "I passed your table earlier. Heard him asking you for money. Talking about the apocalypse, too? Your boyfriend's seriously messed up in the head."
"Don't even mention that loser. He kills my appetite." Chloe gave a cold snort, calculation flashing in her eyes. "If he didn't hand over his paycheck every month and make himself available whenever I needed a free driver, I would've dumped him a long time ago. And today he actually tried to scam me out of five grand? He's not getting a single cent. Mark, you're the one who's actually good to me. I'm obsessed with that Chanel bag you bought me yesterday."
"Five grand's not enough to buy a decent bag," Mark said with a smirk, pinching her chin. "But it's more than enough to get rid of him. Dump him after your birthday next month. No reason to let him keep getting in our way."
"Okay... whatever you want..."
