Chapter 12 - The First Crack

The battlefield seemed to hesitate.

Not because the fighting had stopped.it hadn't.

Steel still clashed against steel.Warriors still shouted. The wounded still cried out from the darkness between the trees.Yet something had changed.

Everyone who witnessed the exchange felt it.

The masked swordsman stared at his broken wrist with disbelief.Jason stared at his own hand.

Neither understood what had just happened.

One precise movement.One impossible strike.

That was all it took.Jason had never trained with swords.Never studied combat techniques.

Most warriors in the Blackfang Pack could defeat him without effort.

Yet somehow his body had reacted before his mind could think. The movement had felt natural.

Instinctive, Dangerous.

The masked leader noticed it immediately.

His expression hardened ,Kill him.

The order cut through the clearing. The hesitation vanished.

The surrounding warriors surged forward.

Three from the left, Two from the right.

Another dropped from a tree overhead, Jason's pulse jumped.Everything happened too quickly.

He barely had time to react.

A blade flashed toward his ribs.Instinct moved him again. His body shifted sideways.

The attack missed by inches.A second warrior lunged.Jason ducked.

The sword swept over his head. The third attacker came from behind. This time he saw it too late.

The strike was unavoidable.

A growl exploded across the battlefield.

A massive gray wolf slammed into the attacker.

Bone cracked.

The warrior was thrown across the clearing.

Kael.

The Council Enforcer landed between Jason and the enemy line.

Blood covered his shoulder.Several fresh wounds crossed his side.

Yet his eyes remained sharp.Get out of here.

Jason frowned, what? Move!

Kael ripped another attacker off his feet and hurled him into a tree.

The warrior crashed hard enough to split the trunk, This isn't your fight, The words felt absurd.

Jason looked around.

People were bleeding because of him.

People were dying because of him.How could this not be his fight?

The masked leader seemed to share the same opinion, His gaze never left Jason.

You still don't understand,bThe man stepped forward.

His voice carried easily across the battlefield.

This was always about you, The temperature dropped, Jason felt it immediately.

The heartbeat returned,Not as violently as before.

But stronger than yesterday,Stronger than at the altar, Boom,His chest tightened.

Boom.

The sensation spread through his veins,The masked leader smiled, There it is.

Fear crawled through Jason's stomach.

The man wasn't reacting to him.

He was reacting to whatever was awakening inside him, The realization made everything worse,Another warrior charged.

Before reaching Jason, the man suddenly froze.

His body locked in place.

Confusion flashed across his face, Then terror.

The warrior slowly looked downward.

A black spear protruded from his chest.

Blood dripped from the tip.

The battlefield fell silent,The dead warrior collapsed, A new figure stood behind him.

Tall, Armored,Motionless.

Nobody had seen him arrive, Not Kael,Not the masked soldiers,Not even the ancient being.

The newcomer pulled the spear free.

Blood splashed across the ground.

His armor was unlike anything Jason had ever seen.

Black metal covered his entire body.

Ancient symbols glowed faintly across the surface.

A long crimson cloak stirred behind him.

The helmet concealed his face completely.

Yet somehow his presence felt familiar.

The masked leader's confidence disappeared instantly, No.

The word escaped before he could stop it.

The armored warrior slowly turned toward him.

The reaction shocked everyone.

The masked leader looked afraid, Genuinely afraid.

Jason remembered the man's calm confidence from earlier.

The way he spoke about empires and kings.

The way he ordered deaths without hesitation.

That confidence was gone now.

The newcomer lowered his spear, A simple movement.

Yet every masked warrior took an unconscious step backward, Who is that?Jason whispered.

Nobody answered.

Even the ancient being looked stunned.

The armored figure eventually stopped in front of Jason.

Close enough for Jason to notice scratches covering the black armor,Old battle scars.

Thousands of them, The warrior dropped to one knee.

The entire battlefield froze, Jason blinked.

The gesture made no sense, Then the warrior lowered his head, My king.

The voice echoed through the clearing.

Deep,Ancient, Filled with unwavering loyalty.

Jason felt his heart stop.

The title hit him harder than anything else tonight, Not because he believed it.

Because part of him recognized it.

A strange warmth spread through his chest.

Memories flickered.A training yard.

A towering warrior holding a spear.

A younger version of himself laughing.

The vision vanished immediately.

Jason staggered, The armored warrior noticed.

His head lowered further, Forgive me i arrived late.

The familiarity in those words felt wrong.

Too personal.

Too real.

Jason struggled to breathe, Who are you?

The warrior slowly rose.

When he answered, pride filled every word.

I am Darius.

First Guardian of the Ravencrest Throne.

The name struck like lightning,Not because Jason knew it, Because his soul knew it.

Another memory exploded inside his mind.

A battlefield covered in snow,Thousands of soldiers.

A black-armored warrior standing before impossible odds,Protecting someone.

Protecting Pain shot through Jason's head.

He nearly fell, The heartbeat thundered, The seal cracked, This time everyone heard it.

The sound didn't come from the sky.

Or the mountain.it came from Jason.

Silver energy burst from his body.

The ground beneath his feet fractured.

Wind exploded outward,Trees bent violently.

The battle stopped completely.

Every eye turned toward him, Jason's vision blurred.Voices echoed inside his head.

Hundreds of them, Thousands.

Fragments of memories flooded his mind.

Faces,Names,Promises,Betrayals,Love,War,Death.

His knees hit the ground, The pressure became unbearable, Someone was screaming.

A moment later he realized the scream belonged to him.

Darius immediately moved forward.

The ancient being appeared beside him.

Both looked alarmed,The seal broke too early.

The ancient being's voice was grim Much too early,bJason barely heard him another voice was growing louder.

One that didn't belong to anyone standing there.

A familiar voice,Calm Powerful.Ancient.

The voice from the mountain, The voice from the visions, The voice connected to the throne.

Wake up, Jason's body trembled.

The battlefield faded around him,The voice came again,Wake up, Aether.

Jason squeezed his eyes shut,No.

The response escaped instinctively, The voice laughed, Not cruelly, Patiently.

Like someone waiting for an inevitable outcome.

The truth doesn't care what name you choose.

The heartbeat roared like a thunderstorm

The seal cracked wider, Silver light erupted from Jason's eyes.m, Every warrior stepped backward.

Fear spread across the clearing, Because for a fraction of a second the boy called Jason Anthony Ravencres disappeared, And when his eyes opened again

They weren't entirely his anymore.
