Chapter 5 My Lydia
(By the way, Amby and Amber are the same lady, just different endearments names)
Harridan'sPoint of View
This moment was like those in the movies; you know, the time when the female lead wakes up and realizes she has amnesia.
This was certainly not how I had planned my day. I was supposed to go on a date with Amby later, when I suddenly received a call from Sister Yanni, Lydia's guardian, saying she hadn't seen her and couldn't reach her. At first, I thought it was a minor issue, but when I got to Lydia's house to check up on her, her co-tenant revealed that she hadn't been home for the past three days.
Lydia wasn't the type to stay out so late, so I immediately knew something was wrong. My first instinct was to call Justin but the bastard wasn't picking up. I called different hospitals and morgues, in case they'd seen her. At first, it was all futile, but after hours of searching, one of the hospitals confirmed that she was admitted there. My chest nearly exploded from excitement, and I didn't even have time to cancel my date with Amby, before I rushed to the hospital.
“Justin…. VIP……Lydia?” Those three words were in the same sentence, and the nurses told me that Lydia was involved in a fatal accident.
I wasn't allowed to see her because her guardian, Justin, said so, and when I tried explaining my close relationship to Lydia with the nurses, I was denied an audience. All of this was hard for me to comprehend, but before I could freak out, Justin arrived, and we immediately got into an intense argument. I was mad at him for keeping Lydia away from me and causing her to have an accident, while he was mad at me for coming to see her.
At first, he refused me entry into the VIP section but when I pressed on, refusing to leave the hospital and cause a scene, he had no other choice but to grant me access to her.
Seeing Lydia in that vulnerable state shattered my heart completely, and I found it hard to breathe. She had always been a light in my darkness, and never for once had I imagined this scenario. I quickly ran to her bedside to help her. While Justin stood by the door looking at both of us with conflicted emotions. I still haven't been able to understand why Justin always acted like he was interested in Lydia. “He has different girls to tease, so why Lydia? She's mine! She has always been by my side, and nothing would ever change that!”
“Are you alright? Does it hurt? Do you want me to call a doctor? Is everything alright?” I asked Lydia numerous questions at once, but her gaze was fixated on Justin, prompting me to also look at Justin.
“Harridan?” She called out to Justin, and I froze.
“What is this? Why is she ignoring me and calling Justin by my birth name? Is this a prank? Am I being pranked?” I wondered, looking around for any hidden camera, but there was none.
Justin looked calm, too calm for a talking drum like him. “Hmm, Lydia, I'm Justin, he's Harridan,” he explained to her gently.
Lydia furrowed her brows. Goodness! She looked genuinely confused. “I'm sorry, I didn't know. You must be brothers then?” She replied with a sweet smile, and I could see the innocence in her eyes.
“Brothers? Really?” Justin and I said cordially with a grimace. “No fucking way!” I grunted, absentmindedly, calling Justin a draft under my breath.
Justin must have heard me because he hissed loudly. “You are getting married to my sister, aren't you?” he asked and continued without waiting for my response. “Well, I guess that kinda makes us brothers in a way,” he smothered, and I was disgusted by that title.
Lydia watched our argument in awe, she looked entertained and unbothered.
When our shouting died down, I placed my palm on her forehead to check her temperature. “You have a terrible fever, Lydia,” I said with a worrisome expression, and Justin ran to her side quickly. He also touched her head and repeated my words.
“We should call the doctor, maybe you need to rest,” Justin added, and turned to get the doctor, but Lydia held his wrist.
“Hmm, you guys, I appreciate your humor and jokes. But who are you? Do we know each other?” Lydia asked, and Justin and I immediately exchanged confused gazes.
Confused? Oh no! Nothing was confusing about this! Justin must have done something to her?! My wolf roared in anger. He had also taken a weird liking to Lydia.
Justin looked at me with a suspicious gaze, and he slowly moved towards me, his eyes glowing with an unusual glint. “What have you done to her, you cunt?! Did you enter the room before I arrived and poison her?! Is this your evil plan?!” He growled at me.
I squinted my eyes and clenched my jaw. If anyone should be making such an accusation, it should be me, not this shameless bastard!
“Can you listen to yourself, Justin? You dare accuse me of sabotage, when you were the one who brought her to your company's hospital and warned your staff not to let anyone in. Also, in high school, you were always bullying and humiliating her in public places!” I stood up, standing tall in front of Justin as I spoke.
“I have always respected you because you're Amby's twin brother, and your father runs the pack, but the moment you hurt my Lydia, all the respect I had for you died!” I said with a bitter stare.
“High school, bullying, your Lydia? What is going on? I don't understand?” Lydia muttered enough for us to hear.
But we didn't reply, because we were too busy fighting for dominance over each other. “Your Lydia? Oh boy, you must have woken up on the wrong side of your bed!” Justin replied to me with a taunting laugh.
“You're engaged, Harridan, and I don't care what twisted fantasy you have building up in that little head of yours, but calling Lydia yours wouldn't change the fact that you're getting married very soon!” Justin drawled, and I could hear the spat and disgust in his words. He must see Lydia as another trophy to be won.
The door was pushed open before I could reply and a doctor entered with four nurses. Lydia sighed in relief and rested her back on the bed.
“Doctor, is everything alright? She can't seem to remember us?” I asked the doctor with a rare urgency.
But Justin, that guy was cursed to rile me up, and to prove a stupid point, he went to the doctor's side.
“Doctor, she seems to have amnesia, she kept asking me who I am. What is going on? Is her head okay?” Justin asked the doctor in a voice that, compared to mine, would probably win…
“I asked first, you brute!” I sneered at Justin, and he shrugged his shoulders.
The doctor looked like he didn't know who to reply to first. He took his time and checked Lydia's vitals, asking her some medical questions.
“Hmm, the hit on her head reached her frontal lobe, and some….. or should I say most of her memories were affected,” the doctor informed us with a solemn voice. While the nurses changed her IV drip, bandages, and others.
“Will she recover?” I asked at once.
“Will she ever recover, doctor?” Justin asked, and the doctor sighed.
“For now, I can't say. We need to monitor her closely, but there's a 5.5 per cent chance that she'll recover her memory if she's surrounded by her past and happy thoughts,” the doctor informed us, and turned to Lydia. She looked scared, and she lay on the bed, mute.
“What do you suggest we do, doctor?” I asked, and luckily Justin didn't repeat my sentence because he was too busy processing the information.
“I will examine her again before giving out an official prescription. We need to take precautions, you never can tell with cases of memory loss,” the doctor replied, his eyes on the medical files in his hand.
This was too much for me to hear. For five years, I couldn't see my best friend because of my relationship with the Magnus family, and after all these years, we've finally met. Yet, another member of the cursed Magnus family has decided to ruin the reunion I've been expecting for years.
“This is all your fault, Justin!” I howled at Justin, momentarily allowing my wolf to take over.
“Oh really?” Justin smirked with an unbothered look on his face.
People have always thought that Justin and I got along, but the truth is, we've always hated each other's guts, we just never showed it near Amby or the media.
Before our conflict could escalate, Lydia spoke. “Doctor, can you please help me out? I need peace and quietness to think about my life, and these strangers are not helping,” he said to the doctor with a pained expression. Justin and I have been too caught up in our own world, so we didn't notice that Lydia was crying.
“Who among us should leave? But remember, Lydia, I was the one who brought you here,” Justin said to Lydia, and for a moment, she looked taken aback.
