Chapter 5 Chapter Five
Before I even have time to notice Keaton is standing on my side of the car, opening the door for me. I get out of the car feeling a little embarrassed. I hope he didn’t see me staring at the spot he touched. If he did, he would probably think I am some kind of weirdo. It’s not like I have never been touched by a guy before.
Well, if you count my brother and best friend that is. I have never had a boyfriend, and no guy has ever even shown interest in me before. All of the guys at school pretty much see me the same way Braxton does. I’m not eye candy, or sexy. I’m not the kind of girl they want to see at a party, or even at school. They definitely don’t want to date me.
Keaton leads the way, holding the door to the diner open for me. We walk in the diner making ourselves at home. That’s what the owner always says. Just sit where you like, make yourself at home. We sit at a booth in the back. There aren’t a whole lot of people here, there never is this late at night. About a minute after sitting down the owner’s daughter Darlene walks over. “What can I get you guys to drink tonight?”
Keaton gives her one of his breathtakingly beautiful smiles. “I will take a chocolate milkshake please.”
Darlene smiles at him and turns to me. “What about you sweetie?”
“I will just take a coke please.”
Darlene nods. “You got it. I will be back in just a minute with your drinks.”
Darlene walks away and I notice Keaton staring at me. “Why are you looking at me like that?” I ask, feeling a little uncomfortable.
Keaton quirks an eyebrow at me. “Since when do you not like milkshakes?” He asks chuckling a little.
I shrug. “I still like milkshakes, I just wanted a soda.”
Keaton laughs. “Whatever you say, don’t be trying to sneak a drink of my milkshake though.” He says winking at me.
My eyes go wide and I gasp. “That was one time. One time when we were like eight years old.”
Keaton burst out laughing. “You drank your whole milkshake and then you decided to try and steal a drink of mine.”
I laugh with him. “I didn’t just try, I succeeded. Then you told my mom on me and I got in trouble.”
Keaton laughs even harder. “Oh god. I forgot about that.”
“I didn’t. You got me in trouble just because you didn’t want to share your milkshake with me.”
“You had already drunk your milkshake; I can’t help the fact you were being greedy.” Keaton says smirking.
“You didn’t have to tell on me though.” I exclaim.
Keaton laughs. “Well don’t worry, I am much more mature now. So, if you try to steal a drink of my milkshake I won’t tell on you. I will just pretend like I didn’t see it.”
I giggle. “Well thanks.”
Keaton winks. “No problem.”
Darlene returns with our drinks and asks if we are ready to order. Neither of us even had to look at the menu, we have been coming here since we were little and the menu hasn’t changed one bit.
“I want the double bacon cheeseburger, and fries please.” I say ordering.
“Of course sweetie and you?” Darlene asks turning to Keaton.
“I will have the double bacon cheeseburger as well, but I would like some onion rings instead of fries please.” Keaton says never taking his eyes off of me.
“You got it. I will be back soon with your order.” Darlene says, smiling at us before walking away.
Keaton is staring at me; a playful smirk plastered on his face. “Why do you keep staring at me?” I ask, glancing around the diner.
Keaton shrugs. “Got to keep an eye on you, don’t want you stealing a drink of my milkshake.”
I laugh. “I will just wait until you get up or something.”
“I bet you will.” Keaton says laughing.
I stare at him for a minute, biting my lip nervously. “Can I ask you something?”
Keaton gives me a concerned look. “Sure, you can ask me anything.”
I can’t believe I am actually going to ask him this. “Why did you stay to help me? You know at the house when the cops showed up. Why didn’t you just run out the door when everyone else, including my brother ran out of the house.”
Keaton gives me a soft smile. “I couldn’t just leave knowing you were still in there Erin. I care to much about you for that.” He pauses for a second and then adds. “You are my best friend’s sister after all.”
Right. I’m Evan’s sister, for a second I thought maybe he actually cared about me. I should have known better than to get my hopes up like that. I don’t even know what to say to that. He didn’t even call me his friend; he just called me his best friend’s sister.
Before I can even figure out what to say in response Darlene shows up with our food. “Here you guys go, if you need anything else just let me know.”
“Thank you.” Keaton and I both say at the same time.
Keaton digs in right away, and I watch him for a second, biting my tongue to keep from laughing when mustard slides down the corner of his mouth onto his chin. Before he can notice me staring, I take a bite of my food. God, I absolutely love the food here.
We talk a little as we eat, laughing about some of the things the girls from our school were wearing at the party. Speaking of what people were wearing, what the hell was Sapphire wearing tonight? Oh my God. Keaton is here with me, not Sapphire. Where is Sapphire? She is not going to be happy if she finds out me and Keaton are here together.
“Where is Sapphire?” I blurt, unable to stop myself.
