Chapter 2 The Miscarriage
Emma's heart skipped a beat. Why had her period suddenly arrived?
She rushed to get in her car, but halfway up the mountain road, cold sweat began pouring down her face.
No, the pain was unbearable!
She quickly pulled over and grabbed her phone to call Evelyn. "Evelyn, are you... back yet? Could you come... pick me up?"
"Emma, where are you? What's wrong?"
"I'm on the mountain road from Harrison Manor."
The wailing of an ambulance siren pierced through the quiet night. Thank God Evelyn had called for an ambulance.
By the time Emma reached the hospital, it was already one in the morning.
After a series of tests, Emma discovered she had miscarried. She had been six weeks pregnant.
Emma lay in the hospital bed, a single tear sliding down her cheek.
Poor child, she would never meet.
Evelyn instantly erupted in fury, cursing colorfully. "That damn bastard! Didn't he know you were pregnant? Still having someone bring you to Dreamy Garden, working you to death like that."
Emma's periods had always been irregular, so she had no idea how she'd suddenly gotten pregnant.
This baby must have been conceived last month. Last month, she hadn't been taken to Dreamy Garden, but to Lumaria instead.
He had been on a business trip to Lumaria then, and had actually flown her out to join him. She had spent three whole days with him in Lumaria before returning home.
At the time, he had warned her that last month had used up this month's quota.
Yet this month, he had still sent someone to fetch her right on schedule.
Just then, a female doctor knocked and entered, holding a report in her hand.
"You were extremely careless. Knowing you were pregnant, how could you take birth control pills? Originally, this baby could have been saved."
Birth control pills?
Both Emma and Evelyn froze at these words!
She and Nicholas never used any contraception. How could there be birth control medication in her system?
Evelyn immediately flew into a rage.
"That bastard! For that bitch Zoe, he was secretly giving you birth control pills. If he didn't want children, he could have said so directly. Why hurt you like this?"
At that moment, Emma's heart felt like it was being pricked by thousands of needles.
Could it really have been Nicholas?
Every time after they were intimate, he would have the staff prepare herbal soup or chicken broth for her. Had the medication been slipped into the chicken soup?
And last month in Lumaria, he hadn't had the opportunity to drug her, so this month he'd come to torment her again? Taking the chance to slip her the pills?
In an instant, she felt all the strength drain from her body.
"Just wait, I'm going to Harrison Manor right now to demand an explanation."
Evelyn was shaking with rage, grabbing her phone as she headed for the door.
"Evelyn." Emma's weak voice was terribly hoarse. "Don't go!"
"Emma!" Evelyn spun around, staring at her in disbelief. "He killed your baby! Are we just going to let this slide?"
Emma slowly closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and when she opened them again, only cold hatred and determination remained.
"He and I have already decided to divorce. I don't want any more entanglements with him."
She paused, looking at Evelyn, speaking each word clearly, "But I will find out exactly how this baby died. Whoever was behind this, I won't let a single one of them off!"
Her gaze was so cold, so ruthless, that even Evelyn shivered.
This was the Emma she knew—seemingly fragile, but with a backbone harder than anyone's.
Evelyn put down her phone and gripped Emma's ice-cold hand tightly.
"Don't worry, we'll get revenge together. Whoever it was, I'll make sure they pay dearly!"
......
In the middle of the night, Emma was awakened by thunder and couldn't fall back asleep.
She lay with her eyes open, staring at the dim nightlight, her thoughts drifting far away.
She remembered what happened when she was ten years old. She had only come to Emerald City when she was twelve.
She had been following him for twelve whole years, going through countless hardships to reach his side. She had given him everything she could give.
Emma had simply gotten pregnant with his child by accident—it really was an accident!
Without realizing it, tears streamed down her face.
Fate seemed to have stripped away her last piece of armor, causing her daytime strength to crumble instantly.
That had been her final hope from their three-year marriage.
But her child was gone!
Already gone!
She covered her face with her hands and sobbed uncontrollably.
The night was deep as ink.
Outside, rain poured down torrentially, raindrops hammering against the glass in a frenzied symphony.
Meanwhile, Nicholas bolted upright in bed, gasping heavily, his forehead covered in cold sweat.
That dream again.
Ice-cold water completely enveloped him, and no matter how he struggled, he couldn't breathe. He could only watch helplessly as he sank continuously into endless darkness, the suffocating sensation so real it left him shaken.
He irritably ran his hands through his hair, got up, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the city shrouded in curtains of rain.
No amount of night rain could wash away the gloom in his heart.
He walked to the liquor cabinet, poured himself a large glass of whiskey, and downed it in one gulp.
The harsh alcohol burned his throat, but couldn't numb that inexplicable panic and unease.
It seemed like something had happened, disturbing his peace of mind, making his heart ache faintly, and leaving him completely at a loss!
The next morning, Emma was wheeled into the operating room.
Cold metal instruments, blinding lights, and the lingering smell of disinfectant that wouldn't go away.
The doctor looked at her chart, his brow deeply furrowed.
"You still have retained tissue in your uterus that must be removed. You should know about your genetic condition, and that you're allergic to all anesthetics, so for this procedure, we cannot use any pain medication."
This meant she would have to endure this bone-scraping agony while essentially fully conscious.
Emma nodded. Her body trembled slightly from fear and cold.
She clenched her teeth, her nails digging deep into her palms.
When the cold instruments entered her body, that sharp, tearing pain instantly overwhelmed her.
"Ugh..."
She couldn't help but groan, cold sweat immediately beading on her forehead.
Pain.
Such pain!
Like her internal organs were being shredded.
Tears poured out uncontrollably, mixing with sweat and blurring her vision.
Emma bit down hard on her lower lip, drawing blood, the metallic taste spreading through her mouth.
She had to remember this pain.
Remember who had made her endure all this! Remember the heart-piercing agony of losing her child!
Whoever had harmed her baby, she would never forgive them!
The pain came in waves, crashing against her nerves like a tide. She felt like a small boat in a raging storm, ready to be torn apart at any moment.
Soon after, she lost consciousness!
At the same time, in the CEO's office of Harrison Group.
Nicholas stared at his phone screen, his frown deepening.
It was already ten in the morning, and Emma's phone was still unreachable.
Turned off!
Was this woman playing disappearing games for no reason?
Hadn't they agreed she would come in today to sign the divorce papers? Had she changed her mind again?
Inexplicable anger surged up, and he irritably threw his phone on the desk.
For some reason, he had been restless since this morning, constantly feeling like something was about to happen.
Was it about Emma?
What could happen to her?
Nothing more than trying some new scheme to win his sympathy, or delay the divorce.
He was curious to see what tricks she would try to pull.
