Chapter 10
“Grandpa, I’m here,” a voice came from behind Nick Harold and the others. Hearing this familiar voice, Nick Harold turned around, somewhat in disbelief.
Standing behind him was none other than his deceased grandson, Owen Harold!
Nick Harold walked over quickly in surprise, grabbed Owen Harold by the arm, and examined him from head to toe. “You little brat! You scared old man to death!”
Owen Harold seemed a little apologetic: “Grandpa, I’m sorry. If it weren’t for this, I never would’ve known that my uncle and elder brother actually wanted to harm me. I had no choice but to hide first and gather evidence. Otherwise, I’d have to live in constant fear at home.”
A few steps away, Larry Harold looked a bit odd. He should’ve expected as much. After all, Owen Harold was a man with too many schemes and complicated thoughts. How could he die so easily? No wonder he always felt something was off about him before!
Larry Harold finally realized why he had felt something was off all along. He couldn’t figure it out before, but now he understood: everything had gone too smoothly. It was so smooth that he had let down his guard, thinking the mission was a success!
If Owen Harold were really that stupid, he wouldn’t have been suppressed all along by those around him. Grandfather wouldn’t have chosen Owen Harold as his heir either!
It’s all his fault for being so careless!
With one reply, Owen Harold brought the conversation back to the point that Old Harold had tried to divert from earlier.
“Oh, Owen, Grandpa knows you’re not willing to accept this. But our Harold family really cannot afford any scandals involving fratricide. Otherwise, our reputation will be completely ruined!” Nick Harold tried to reason with Owen Harold using that excuse.
Hiding in the ward and listening to all that for a long time, Martha Lambert thought to herself, “Don’t the Harold family already have enough scandals? Whether it’s marrying a mistress or holding a funeral wedding for their ‘deceased’ grandson.”
Especially the second one – it’s way more exciting than this one!
Although most of these things are well-known within this circle and aren’t openly discussed, in the eyes of others, your Harold family has long since lost any sense of dignity or respectability.
Owen Harold clearly knew what his grandfather wanted to do. If they compromised this time, it would likely be much harder to seize similar opportunities in the future.
“Since Grandpa has made up his mind, please don’t tell anyone that I’m still alive. I’ll take my mother to another place.” Owen Harold spoke firmly.
“Owen, what do you want me to do?” Nick Harold was a bit surprised. Did Owen Harold’s words just now mean that he wanted to cut ties with him?
“I don’t want to live with someone who wants to kill me. I’d be too worried about my own safety.” Owen Harold continued harshly, “I don’t want to end up like my father, dying under mysterious circumstances…”
Nick Harold looked at his most beloved grandson. Knowing his grandson’s attitude, he knew that a decision had to be made today, on his and the eldest son’s behalf.
Nick Harold glanced at his talented grandson. He was capable, ambitious, and skilled. Over the years, he’d managed to take the Harold family to a higher level.
On the other hand, there’s his own son and another grandson. Although this son isn’t very ambitious, he’s still his firstborn son. It’s impossible to say he doesn’t care about him.
On one side are one’s own interests, and on the other side is one’s own child.
Nick Harold felt like none of his choices were right.
While Nick Harold was struggling with his thoughts, Larry Harold stepped forward and interrupted him: “Stop arguing. It’s the father’s debt, so the son must pay. I’ll take the punishment in place of my father.”
This statement cleverly shifts Nick Harold’s blame onto Larry Harold. It also effectively conveys to Nick Harold that everything Marcus Harold does has nothing to do with him. But Nick Harold is willing to take the blame himself, fulfilling his filial duties, so that Nick doesn’t have to decide which side to choose.
Owen Harold stared at Larry Harold, his eyes narrowed slightly. He knew that Larry Harold had orchestrated much of what had happened this time. But none of the evidence they had pointed to Larry Harold. It was clear just how careful this man was.
It seems I underestimated him before.
But it doesn’t matter. I never thought I’d be able to kill both of them anyway. By killing Marcus Harold, at least they’ll learn their lesson!
Owen Harold turned his gaze away from Larry Harold and continued to look at Nick Harold, hoping he would give him an answer.
When Nick Harold heard Owen Harold mention his father, he felt both guilty and heartbroken. He thought that the reason his grandson had become what he was now was the fact that he had no father.
After much thought, I finally made a decision.
Larry Harold handed him the document. After reading it from beginning to end, his face grew increasingly angry. Finally, he slammed the document on Marcus Harold’s face and said, “Look at what you’ve done! Get out of the Harold family forever! Never come back!”
Without waiting for Marcus Harold to defend himself, she simply took Owen Harold away with her. “Good boy, come with grandpa. Let grandpa take a good look at you.”
Owen Harold followed obediently, without any concern that Marcus Harold might refuse to leave. Even if Marcus refused, Larry Harold would surely persuade him to go!
Glancing at Larry Harold as he left, Owen Harold smiled at him, then turned his head away to talk with Nick Harold.
Larry Harold also remained silent, with a stern expression on his face. At this point, it was clear that he had underestimated the situation. Then, he took the dissatisfied Marcus Harold and left the place.
“Why do you want me to leave!” Marcus Harold said resentfully. “I really wasted my time raising you. When that old man spoke, didn’t you even say anything in my defense?”
Marcus Harold’s constant nagging only made Larry Harold more irritable. He retorted angrily, “If you were a little more careful, would things have turned out like this? No wonder that old fool refused to hand over the company to you. With your skills, even if I were in charge, I’d rather fail than give it to you!”
“You!” Marcus Harold was somewhat furious. He never expected his own son to speak of him in such a way.
Larry Harold tried hard to suppress the urge to strangle Marcus Harold. “Just listen to what the old man says and go outside for now. I’ll take care of transferring power from Owen Harold to me later. Behave yourself once you’re outside, and I’ll find a chance to talk to the old man and bring you back.”
Marcus Harold wanted to say something else, but just as he was about to speak, Larry Harold’s gaze made him stop.
All he could say awkwardly was, “I’ll do as you say.”
Owen Harold doesn’t know what Larry Harold and Marcus Harold said. Right now, he’s completely focused on dealing with Nick Harold.
Knowing that Nick Harold was very dissatisfied with his actions, he simply ignored the fact that Larry Harold hadn’t been punished, acting as if he wasn’t aware of it at all.
Nick Harold certainly knew that, with Marcus Harold’s level of intelligence, it was unlikely he could come up with such plans. So, it was definitely Larry Harold who was behind this. The evidence just now also pointed more or less at Larry Harold. But Nick Harold chose to ignore it all.
After all, within the Harold family, having one person hold too much power isn’t ideal – it’s difficult to control such a situation.
