Chapter 12

The bodyguards formed a human wall to block those crazy journalists. Owen Harold and the others took the opportunity to leave quickly as well.

Owen Harold helped Martha Lambert into the car. As soon as the door closed, Martha Lambert couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief. Finally, she was out of there. Those people were terrifying.

“Heh, what’s the matter? Are you scared?” Owen Harold looked at him with a smile.

Martha Lambert looked at Owen Harold with some surprise. This man wasn’t quite the same as he was on the wedding night. He hadn’t been very talkative that night. What kind of trick was he playing?

“Well, whether you’ve seen it or not, it’s still pretty scary.” Martha Lambert turned her gaze away.

“It’s okay, it won’t happen again.” Owen Harold touched Martha Lambert’s head again. Hmm, the feel was nice. Maybe he should think about touching her head more often in the future.

Martha Lambert didn’t know what Owen Harold was thinking, but his attitude just now made her even more certain that Owen Harold wasn’t the same person as he had been that night.

His gaze was fixed on the driver sitting in front and Marian Reid. Could it be that there was someone else there as well…

The car quickly drove into the Harold family’s old house. Martha Lambert was also led into their room by Owen Harold.

Martha Lambert looked around the room, her eyes involuntarily drifting toward the bed. It was on that bed, that very night…

The events of that night kept haunting Martha Lambert’s mind. The humiliation and helplessness of that night were deeply etched in her memory.

“Hah, what are you looking at? Want to do it again?” Owen Harold closed the door, stopped pretending, and threw himself onto the bed.

An understanding flickered in Martha Lambert’s eyes. Sure enough, his attitude outside was just pretend. It was unclear who he was trying to guard against.

But acting so freely in front of me—does that mean he really considers me one of his own, or does he simply ignore me, since I pose no threat to him at all?

“I don’t want to. Young Master Harold is all pretense on the surface, but he’s quite skilled at what he does,” said Martha Lambert indifferently.

“Not at all! No one plays as well as Miss Lambert,” Owen Harold said with a sneer.

Martha Lambert stopped and didn’t respond. Lost in thought about what had happened earlier, she finally spoke tentatively, “Um, Owen Harold, could I ask you for a favor?”

“What?” Owen Harold casually fiddled with his phone, not even giving Martha Lambert a glance. It seemed like Martha Lambert wasn’t even as interesting as the phone in his hands.

“Could you help me find out the causes of my mother and sister’s deaths?” Martha Lambert spoke with difficulty.

“Huh? Weren’t you the one who killed your sister? Why do you still want to investigate?” Owen Harold raised his eyebrows in disbelief, clearly not taking Martha Lambert’s words seriously.

Martha Lambert didn’t argue. After all, she was now accused of killing her own sister. Even if she claimed she wasn’t the one who did it, there was no concrete evidence to prove her innocence. And if there had been any evidence, John Lambert would have likely gotten rid of it.

Knowing something is one thing, but accepting one’s fate is another. Martha Lambert certainly isn’t willing to give up so easily. It’s not her fault, so never try to blame her for it!

“Don’t you believe me when I say it’s not you?” Martha Lambert retorted.

“Well, it depends on what kind of answer Miss Lambert gives me.” Marcus Harold lay on his side, resting his head in his hands as he looked at Martha Lambert, seemingly waiting for her reply.

“It’s not true… I didn’t kill my sister. I was arguing with John Lambert at that time. I was in the living room. How could I possibly have gone to the stairs and pushed my sister down?”

After what felt like a long while, just as Owen Harold and the others were starting to get impatient, Martha Lambert finally spoke up.

“Okay, I believe you. I’ll help you with the investigation. But in exchange, you need to agree to one thing for me,” said Owen Harold.

Martha Lambert was a little surprised. She thought Owen Harold would take the opportunity to say that her debt to Marian Reid was now settled. It seemed she had overthought things. Perhaps he hadn’t even cared about it at all.

“Help me deal with my father. I’m married now, and he’ll definitely press me to have a child and continue the family line. Just cooperate with me then.”

Owen Harold’s request surprised Martha Lambert a bit. She hadn’t expected anything like that at all.

“I’m not asking you to agree right away. You can take some time to think it over. If you don’t want to, I’ll find another way. Don’t worry, I’ll still investigate what happened to your mother and sister,” said Owen Harold.

Martha Lambert thought for a long time. She thought she’d spend her entire life in a mental hospital. To her surprise, she ended up being married off to a dead man. And just when she thought she’d become a widow, this “husband” didn’t actually die after all.

Just as a poem says, “When mountains and rivers seem to block all paths, yet another village appears ahead.”

Who knows what new experiences this will bring to my life this time?

At this moment, Martha Lambert was like a gambler, deciding on her life’s path whether to take a more conservative approach or to take a risk.

After some thought, Martha Lambert decided to agree after all: “Okay, I agree.”

“Nice to cooperate with you.” Owen Harold extended his hand.

“Nice to work with you.” Martha Lambert shook his hand, and the stern expression on her face finally gave way to a smile.

It couldn’t help but make Owen Harold’s eyes light up. Well, although the smile was a bit stiff and awkward, it was definitely much better than when he had a straight face.

After Martha Lambert arrived, she couldn’t help but yawn. Lately, she’d just been eating and sleeping. After going through such a thrilling situation earlier, she’d also just negotiated some matters with Owen Harold.

With her nerves finally relaxed after being tense the whole time, Martha Lambert soon felt sleepy, but she tried to hold on.

As soon as I arrived at the old house, I wanted to go to sleep. I guess someone will come and wake me up later, but I fell asleep anyway. It seems kind of impolite to do that.

“Tired? Then take a nap.” After the negotiation, Owen Harold seemed much more talkative. Seeing that Martha Lambert was tired, he took the initiative to say, “Would you like me to carry you upstairs so you can rest?”

“No, no, I think I’ll have to go down in a bit.” Martha Lambert shook her head in refusal.

“It’s okay. I’ll wake you up when the time comes.” Owen Harold carried Martha Lambert to the bed in a firm, uncompromising manner.

Martha Lambert must have been really tired. As soon as she touched the bed, she fell asleep almost immediately. “Then… remember to wake me up later.”

Her words were a bit unclear. Before Owen Harold could react, Martha Lambert had already fallen fast asleep.

Owen Harold lay across from Martha Lambert, staring at her peaceful sleeping face. His heart softened at the sight. Sometimes, it’s nice just like this.

“Knock knock”

There was a knock at the door. Owen Harold, who had been squinting, immediately opened his eyes.

“Young master, young mistress, the master asks me to call you down for dinner,” came the maid’s voice from outside the door.

“Understood,” Owen Harold replied from inside.

The maid left after receiving the reply. Owen Harold then called out to Martha Lambert, who was sound asleep: “Wake up, Martha. It’s time for us to go down for dinner.”

“Hmm…” Martha Lambert struggled slightly, clearly dissatisfied.
