Chapter 4
Meanwhile, Martha Lambert was carried out, unconscious. The doctor also came out of the operating room, ready to report the surgery’s progress to the family waiting outside. But he couldn’t find the woman who had signed the forms earlier.
Only two men who looked like bodyguards stood outside. One of them, upon seeing the doctor and the others coming out, stepped forward and asked, “Is our young mistress alright?”
The doctor looked at the two people, thought for a moment, and then replied, “It’s not good. The internal injuries are too severe. If proper care isn’t taken, there’s a possibility that…”
The doctor didn’t say everything, but everyone present understood the general meaning.
Even the two bodyguards felt pity for Martha Lambert. How unfortunate must she be to suffer such things over and over again.
But it has nothing to do with them anyway. Once they’ve taken the employer’s money, it’s the employer’s responsibility to handle things properly. Worrying about other matters is like overstepping one’s bounds.
Martha Lambert was rushed to the intensive care unit, where doctors were on standby 24 hours a day to monitor her condition and respond immediately to any emergencies.
The bodyguard also briefed Marian Reid and Owen Harold on Martha Lambert’s situation.
“Good that nothing happened. Please continue to protect the young lady. Report anything to me immediately.” Marian Reid sighed in relief. As long as the surgery was successful, that was all that mattered. Then she gave instructions to the bodyguards.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Marian Reid rushed back to the scene, ordered her bodyguards to closely monitor the area, and sent professionals to investigate and gather evidence that could be useful to their side.
While watching them gather evidence, I kept thinking about Martha Lambert in the hospital.
No matter how heartless she might be, Marian Reid still felt some gratitude and guilt toward this daughter-in-law who had saved her life. But no matter how much guilt she felt, her son’s interests came first. No one was allowed to undermine what was best for her son!
As for Martha Lambert? Once this is over, I’ll make sure to compensate her properly. Soon, Marian Reid pushed aside her feelings of guilt toward Martha Lambert and continued to oversee the work at hand.
Owen Harold, on the other hand, wasn’t exactly calm at all.
Owen Harold held the documents passed to him by his subordinates. Yet his thoughts kept drifting back to Martha Lambert. He had just received news about her, but he didn’t know how things were with her now.
In my mind, images keep flashing back to what happened last night with Martha Lambert. Her face keeps appearing in my thoughts.
“Young master? What’s wrong?”
On the other end of the video, Xu Bo asked strangely. Regarding work-related matters, Owen Harold rarely got distracted like this. Unless something really important happened, there was probably nothing more crucial than what was happening now.
Xu Bo had no intention of going after Martha Lambert. After all, they had just gotten married. There was no reason for them to be involved with each other before marriage, especially since she was chosen by the eldest family member. Even if he saved the lady, there was no need for Owen Harold to worry so much about her, to the point of forgetting his own responsibilities.
“Nothing much. Go on.” Owen Harold closed his eyes, pushing those thoughts aside. He continued to listen to Xu Bo’s report.
“Very well, young master. The matter is…”
Xu Bo had no reason to doubt him and continued to report the evidence he had gathered and the progress of the plan.
Things weren’t very calm at Martha Lambert’s place either. A few unexpected people showed up.
“I’m sorry, Miss Lambert. Our young mistress is still unconscious and unable to receive guests.” The bodyguard declined Alice Lambert’s request, standing guard at the door of the hospital room the entire time.
Alice Lambert still wasn’t convinced: “I’ll just go in and take a look. I want to see how my sister is doing.”
The two of them were arguing here. The bodyguard almost wanted to call someone to drive her away. Just then, another person arrived.
“What’s the commotion? Don’t you know that the young mistress needs rest? Why are you making so much noise?”
Larry Harold and Marcus Harold walked toward them from the elevator, staring intently at their bodyguards and Alice Lambert.
The bodyguard quickly explained, “Young master, it’s Miss Lambert. She kept wanting to go in and see the young mistress. I told her no, but she insisted on trying to get in anyway.”
The bodyguard deliberately tried to discredit Alice Lambert. If she hadn’t made such a fuss here, he wouldn’t have been blamed either. So, in terms of discrediting Alice Lambert, the bodyguard had every right to do so.
Upon hearing how the bodyguard addressed the newcomer, Alice Lambert immediately realized that it was Larry Harold.
Now that Owen Harold is dead, Larry Harold is the only heir in the Harold family who can inherit their fortune. If they can get their hands on him, then the Lambert family will truly rise to new heights!
And Alice Lambert is the young lady of the Harold family! Martha Lambert, that widow, also has to please her in order to survive!
At the thought of this, Alice Lambert’s breathing became rapid. She wished she could take Larry Harold to the registry office right away to get married. But she knew that was impossible. No worries. You have to take things one step at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day either.
She’s not in a hurry!
Alice Lambert glanced at her outfit discreetly. It was fine, perfect. Her makeup wasn’t smudged either. Then, she tossed her hair back and walked toward Larry Harold with a graceful demeanor.
“Hello, Mr. Harold. I’m Alice Lambert, Martha Lambert’s sister.” She extended her hand after saying that.
Larry Harold glanced at Alice Lambert and smiled. “Of course I know Miss Alice Lambert. Back then, it was I who personally chose her as the wife for my brother.”
Alice Lambert paled. Was he the one who had chosen her to marry a dead man all along? Dad said this matter was already settled. No one would ever know that they had switched people, right?
Larry Harold watched the changing expressions on Alice Lambert’s face and could probably guess what she was thinking. How dare these people treat the Harold family like fools? Even the simplest tasks were done carelessly.
Alice Lambert forced a smile. “Mr. Harold really knows how to make jokes. Isn’t Mr. Harold’s sister-in-law my sister, Martha Lambert? Why is it me now?”
After saying that, she changed the subject: “Is Mr. Harold here to visit Martha as well?”
Larry Harold didn’t insist any further. Instead, he continued along with Alice Lambert’s words: “Yes, right after Martha married into our Harold family, something like this happened. We’re really worried about her health.”
Watching Larry Harold look so worried, Alice Lambert felt a bit jealous. If it were her lying there today, then Larry Harold would be worried about her, not that bitch Martha Lambert!
This thought only lasted for a moment. Alice Lambert shook her head and dismissed the idea.
Martha Lambert can only deserve pity now. Throughout her life, she’ll have to spend her days holding photographs of that dead man, Owen Harold. Meanwhile, she’ll become the mistress of the Harold family, someone who’s above everyone else!
“Is everything okay with Miss Lambert?” Larry Harold asked Alice Lambert, looking a bit worried.
“I’m fine. My sister Martha has a bit of a bad temper. I hope Mr. Harold will take better care of her in the future.” After determining her goal, Alice Lambert changed her strategy.
While retreating, they managed to get Martha Lambert to do what they wanted.
A little bad-tempered? They actually killed their own twin sister. How can you even call that “a little bad-tempered”? If so, then should their violent temper be called “little lamb” instead?
The bodyguards’ mouths twitched in disgust. They really didn’t want to see Alice Lambert lying so blatantly.
However, Alice Lambert’s words did have an effect. Martha Lambert was known for her violent temper and a history of violent behavior. These facts kept coming back to their minds. Once prejudices are formed, they’re hard to change.
“It’s okay, it’s what we’re supposed to do.” Larry Harold gave Alice Lambert a somewhat meaningful look.
“Since that’s the case, I’ll take my leave now and not bother Mr. Harold any further.” Alice Lambert felt a bit uncomfortable under their gazes, so she quickly said goodbye and prepared to leave. Today, she’d managed to make a presence felt among the Harold family. It was a satisfactory outcome, so it was time to go.
“Have a good day, Miss Lambert,” Larry Harold said with a smile.
