Chapter 6

No matter what others might be thinking, Martha Lambert had no idea. All she could feel was intense pain throughout her body, as if it had been run over by something. Her head also hurt terribly.

What’s wrong with her?

Oh, right. She pushed Marian Reid out, and then what? Then, I think… what was it again?

Martha Lambert felt like her mind was fragmented. She couldn’t seem to remember what happened next. She shook her head, trying to recall something.

“Martha… Martha, are you okay?”

Martha Lambert felt like someone was calling her. With great effort, she tried to open her eyelids, which felt stuck together as if glued. After struggling for a while, Martha Lambert finally managed to open her eyes.

As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw Marian Reid’s surprised face before me.

“Martha, you’re awake.” Marian Reid gently touched Martha Lambert’s hand with affection.

Martha Lambert was a little puzzled. “What’s wrong with me?”

“Good child, you hurt yourself trying to save me that day. You’ve been asleep for three days now. I’m glad you’ve woken up.” Marian Reid briefly told Martha Lambert what had happened to her.

“Oh, I see… Are you alright, madam?” Martha Lambert asked, realizing what had happened.

“I’m fine. You should rest first. I’ll go call the doctor.” Marian Reid got up and left to fetch the doctor.

Martha Lambert lay in bed, watching as Marian Reid left. She organized the information she had gathered and began to understand what happened next.

Based on John Lambert’s description and his feelings that night when he saw Owen Harold, it seems like Owen Harold was a somewhat filial person. Therefore, by helping to save Marian Reid, she might enable Owen Harold to find out the truth behind the deaths of his mother and sister. This would, in turn, clear her name of any wrongdoing.

Even if Owen Harold is heartless and cold, surely someone else knows about her saving Marian Reid. If they don’t want to be criticized for being heartless or harm the Harold family, then they’ll surely help out!

Martha Lambert did the math. This deal seemed pretty worthwhile, though the cost was a bit high. But it didn’t matter—as long as it worked out!

As for what Owen Harold was trying to do by pretending to be dead, it wasn’t her concern. There was nothing she could do about it. It would be better for her to simply remain a widow with a dead husband. Maybe, if Owen Harold showed some mercy, he’d help her find out the causes of her mother and sister’s deaths, and even let her go.

Martha Lambert thought about it in such a wonderful way that she couldn’t help but smile.

“What made you laugh so happily?” Marian Reid brought the doctor in and saw Martha Lambert smiling.

It must be said that Martha Lambert with a stern face is far less beautiful than Martha Lambert with a smile. That radiant smile captures everyone’s attention, making you unable to help but follow her gaze.

“Nothing much, just thought of something pleasant.” Martha Lambert replied in a somewhat perfunctory manner.

Upon hearing this, Marian Reid knew right away that Martha Lambert didn’t want to talk about it. After all, the memories that could bring her joy were mostly related to her mother and sister. But since those two had passed away, bringing up this topic would be rather thoughtless.

“Doctor, please come and take a look at Martha. How is she?” Marian Reid called out to the doctor nearby, asking her to check on her daughter-in-law.

The doctor examined her carefully and said with a sense of relief, “The young lady has passed the critical stage. All that’s needed now is proper care and rest.”

The doctor felt as though a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders. If that woman hadn’t pulled through, who knew what the Harold family might do to him? After all, they were part of a powerful family. Who could really understand their motives? It was just like those unreasonable tyrants from ancient times.

Marianne Reid had no idea that her Harold family was labeled as belonging to ancient tyrants.

“That’s great, that’s great. Doctor, what should we do next?” Marian Reid happily clasped her hands together and bowed a few times.

“Keep observing. Come to me if there are any problems.” With that, the doctor left.

“Thank you, doctor. Please take care of me.”

Marian Reid happily saw the doctor out.

Martha Lambert watched Marian Reid bustling about, feeling a warm sense of gratitude in her heart. Although she knew that most of the reason why Marian was kind to her was because Martha had saved her life, she was still touched by it.

Let her be confused for once. Let’s pretend that Marian Reid truly loves her without any selfish motives.

Thinking of this, a smile appeared on Martha Lambert’s lips, and she fell asleep again with her eyes closed.

Marian Reid saw that Martha Lambert had fallen asleep again, so she didn’t disturb her. She quietly left the room and closed the door gently behind her.

“Has that child woken up?” As Nick Harold arrived at the door of the ward, he saw Marian Reid coming out. He quickly asked.

“I’m awake now. The doctor said I just need to take good care of myself.” Marian Reid replied with a smile.

Upon hearing this, Nick Harold let out a huge sigh of relief. “That’s good, that’s great. Now, my dear grandson might have a chance to come back.”

Marian Reid had a somewhat strange look in her eyes, but she said nothing. In Nick Harold’s opinion, it wasn’t anything to worry about. As long as his beloved grandson returned, who cared about the rest?

Marian Reid had no way of guessing Nick Harold’s thoughts. She stepped forward and said, “The child has fallen asleep again. Dad, let’s go back. Let her get some rest. We can come see her later.”

“Okay, okay. Let’s go back first.” Nick Harold didn’t argue either. What was most important now was to ensure that the child took good care of his health.

Day after day, for these two months, Marian Reid has come to the hospital every day to take care of Martha Lambert. In the eyes of Marcus Harold and Larry Harold, this was simply Marian Reid’s way of coping with the pain of losing her son by projecting that grief onto Martha Lambert.

During this time, Alice Lambert also stopped by the hospital from time to time, hoping to run into Larry Harold, just to make herself noticeable and keep in touch with him. She didn’t really get much of a chance to talk with Larry Harold, but she did recognize Marian Reid.

Alice Lambert didn’t mind either. In fact, she planned to get closer to Martha Lambert first, and then put some eye drops in Martha’s eyes to make her sad. The happier Martha Lambert was unhappy, the happier Alice Lambert would be!

“Aunt Reid, you come to take care of Martha every day. Thank you so much for your hard work.” Alice Lambert walked over gracefully, smiling as she saw Marian Reid coming out of Martha Lambert’s hospital room.

“Oh, it’s Alice. You’ve come to see Martha again.” Marian Reid looked up. It was Alice Lambert, who had been visiting quite frequently lately.

Alice Lambert said, “Yes, after all, Martha is my sister. She’s hurt, so of course I need to come and see her.”

Marian Reid glanced at Alice Lambert, smiled, but said nothing. If she hadn’t known the truth, she might have really thought that Alice Lambert was a kind sister who cared for her younger sibling.

“I need to go back early too. You girls go ahead and chat.” Marian Reid said goodbye in a hurry and left. Owen Harold was still waiting for her at home to discuss matters with her. He had no time to waste with her.

“Alright, goodbye, Aunt Reid.” Alice Lambert watched as Marian Reid left. The smile on her face vanished instantly. She then headed, without hesitation, to Martha Lambert’s .

The bodyguards outside knew that Alice Lambert and Marian Reid frequently went in and out of Martha Lambert’s over the past two months. Since they recognized them as guests, they didn’t stop them.

Martha Lambert wanted the bodyguard to stop her from entering, but the bodyguard always went in and out with Marian Reid. It was awkward to ask the bodyguard not to let Alice Lambert in, so Martha simply endured it each time.

Originally, Martha Lambert thought she’d be able to get a good night’s sleep since she didn’t see Alice Lambert and Marian Reid together. But just as she was about to close her eyes, she saw Alice Lambert enter the room.

With a hint of impatience, she rolled her eyes. “What, you couldn’t wait to come here on your own? Alice Lambert, I really thought you had more patience than this.”

Alice Lambert ignored Martha Lambert’s sarcastic remarks as well. She simply sat down on a stool nearby, looked at her fingernails, and said, “Speak up. After all, you’re still a failure.”

“Do you know? Dad is going to get married to Mom. By then, I’ll be the legitimate lady of the Lambert family. And you’ll be nothing but a loser who isn’t even worthy of wiping my shoes.” Alice Lambert sneered as she leaned close to Martha Lambert, revealing this information that could completely upset Martha Lambert.

However, I didn’t see the panicked expression I had expected on Martha Lambert’s face. She remained expressionless and said, “Finally, they couldn’t resist getting married after all? I wondered how long they could hold out. But they do go well together… After all, scumbags and trashy people are meant for each other, aren’t they?” Then, maliciously, she added, “The kids they have will probably be just as worthless.”

Martha Lambert’s words really made Alice Lambert lose her temper.
