Chapter 8
“Nothing much…” Before the nurse could finish speaking, Martha Lambert overpowered her with a louder voice.
“She’s trying to harm me!”
As soon as Martha Lambert finished speaking, several people rushed in from outside. In an instant, they surrounded Martha Lambert and protected her.
“Madam, what’s going on here?” asked the lead bodyguard.
“First, take care of that young nurse. Don’t touch anything on the floor either. I need to make a call to the lady.” Martha Lambert gave orders. She was afraid that the young nurse might take advantage of the chaos to remove those items. If the person who came here really intended to harm her, then all the evidence would be destroyed, and she herself would appear to be the one causing trouble.
“Very well, madam.” The bodyguard nodded, then took out his phone to call Marian Reid.
The call was answered quickly: “What’s wrong?”
“Madam, it’s me, Martha Lambert,” said Martha Lambert.
“Oh, what’s wrong, Martha?” Marian Reid was a little surprised, as she hadn’t expected Martha Lambert to call her.
Martha Lambert carefully chose her words, trying to find a way to speak without being rude. If it really was Marian Reid who arranged this, then her words would be like slapping Marian in the face. So, she had to think carefully before speaking.
“Have the lady and the doctor decided on any new medical treatments recently?” asked Martha Lambert.
“No, the doctor said that’s all that’s needed. You just need to rest properly, and you’ll recover soon.” Marian Reid seemed puzzled by Martha Lambert’s question.
Martha Lambert sighed in relief. If it wasn’t Marian Reid who arranged this, then her actions hadn’t offended her after all. But then, Martha Lambert felt a chill run down her spine. If it wasn’t Marian Reid, then someone else must have done it. But what was their motive?
“Oh, just now, a nurse came to give me an injection. She said it was your and the doctor’s arrangement…” Martha Lambert briefly described what had happened.
Marian Reid immediately picked up on some of the underlying concerns: “I understand. Be careful. You don’t need to worry about anything else. We’ll take care of it. You should get some rest.”
“Okay,” Martha Lambert agreed obediently.
Then he handed the phone to the bodyguard beside him. The bodyguard took the phone, listened to Marian Reid’s instructions, carefully gathered up the little nurse and everything she brought with her. He also kept the little nurse under guard until Marian Reid arrived to deal with them.
“Owen, look, could it be that they couldn’t hold back anymore?” Marian Reid hung up the phone and asked Owen Harold in the video.
Owen Harold nodded in agreement. “I think it’s possible. Since they’ve taken action, there’s no need to be polite anymore. We can take action too.”
“Okay, then I’ll have them get ready. You need to be careful about your safety these days. This is a critical period. Don’t make any mistakes, or all your efforts will be in vain.” Marian Reid kept nagging on, like a mother who’s worried about her child traveling far away and wants to ensure everything is taken care of.
“Okay, Mom. I understand. I’m not a child anymore.” Owen Harold felt a bit resigned, but also quite amused.
Marian Reid said a few more things, then ended the video call.
“Madam, are we going to the hospital now?” Xu Bo asked from the side.
Marian Reid stood up, adjusted her clothes, and said, “Of course. We’ll go to the hospital and question that woman who tried to harm my daughter-in-law.”
Xu Bo’s expression seemed a bit strange. Could it be that Marian Reid really accepted Martha Lambert as her daughter-in-law? Something didn’t seem right here.
Xu Bo and Marian Reid arrived at the hospital quickly, and they did so with quite a bit of pomp. After all, Marian Reid’s role now was that of a woman who had lost her son, with only her daughter-in-law left to take care of her. And it was the daughter-in-law who had saved her life. If they didn’t put on a proper show, how could they attract the old man’s attention and get him to support their side of the family?
“Have they found out what was in that syringe?” Marian Reid asked, sitting in her chair.
The bodyguard stood respectfully to the side, reporting the results he had just received: “It’s a high-concentration solution of potassium chloride. If injected into the body, it would immediately cause arrhythmia and respiratory failure, leading to death.”
Marian Reid slammed her hand on the table and said angrily, “Interrogate that woman thoroughly! How dare she cause trouble for our Harold family? She’s clearly desperate for death!”
“Yes, ma’am.” One of the bodyguards stepped back and went to the next room to question the young nurse.
“You guys go ahead and leave too.” Marian Reid touched her forehead, looking a little tired.
“Very well, madam.”
The other bodyguards, who were unaware of what was going on, simply thought that Marian Reid was a bit exhausted due to all the recent events. So, they didn’t suspect anything and just went downstairs.
Soon, only Marian Reid and Xu Bo were left in the ward. “Did they really do it?”
“Eighty or ninety percent sure, I guess. Tell them to be more careful.” Marian Reid put down her hands, no longer showing the exhausted expression she had earlier.
