Chapter 8
Xesha's POV
"We all know who stole him and became his mistress," Shana said again. This time, she spoke slowly and calmly with a slight smirk on her face.
She glanced at Helena, who was slowly approaching Jasper and grabbing his arm.
"Alpha Jasper, I don't think there's any need to fight with Doctor Foxx anymore. It will only make us a laughing stock. After all, it was my fault for asking for your help at that time." She turned to everyone in the room. Her face showed embarrassment at Shana's insults. "Jasper and I were originally just childhood friends who became work colleagues because of my expertise in a field that he apparently needed very much."
Shana raised her hand. "Keep that explanation to yourself, Miss Millian. We don't want to hear it." She then turned to me. "Come on, Xesha. Where do you want to sit? Stay here or go to another room with me?"
Shana gazed at everyone in the room. "From now on, don't call her Miss Foxx, lowly omega, let alone mistress. She is Doctor Xesha Foxx. Respect her."
Shana turned to me. "Are you coming with me or..."
I signaled Shana to wait while I walked towards Jasper, who was still blocked by the guards.
"Xesha, please... stay here with me, I can explain everything," Jasper pleaded.
"I've given you too many chances, Jasper. But behind my back, this is what you do." I turned around and left him who was still calling, but I no longer cared.
"I thought you would change your mind," said Shana. I didn't answer, but just sat next to her and followed the auction. "I think I like the current version of you." she smiled.
"I don't want to be as foolish as I was before," I replied.
"Yeah, for several years you were like hypnotized by his love. Now you have the courage to make decisions without him, and that's good."
I heard what Shana said, but my ears picked up a faint sob that seemed to come from outside. I turned to Shana, who was looking at me questioningly.
"What?"
"Did you hear that? That sound..."
"Oh... of course. Who else but the Drama Queen, your ex-boyfriend's mistress. Just ignore her. Let's focus on this event. Who knows, you might find something good later."
Well... I didn't really like this kind of thing because I thought if I wanted something, it was better to just buy it. I could get it for ten times cheaper with almost the same quality. The difference was just that auctioned items usually had special features that items sold in stores didn't have.
The event was already underway, but the auctioneer's voice wasn't very clear.
"Who's crying?" I asked again, half whispered. Shana immediately turned to the other room where Jasper and Helena were.
"Let me handle this." Shana then called one of the staff members at the event and whispered something to him. Not long after, the man came out and I could hear someone arguing with Jasper in the other room next door.
"It's not just our room that's noisy. Try checking the other room," said someone from the room next door—where Jasper was.
Apparently, his mistress was practicing her acting skills by sobbing throughout the event. She probably hoped that everyone would see her as the victim and condemn me as the antagonist in their fabricated story.
"Who dares to reprimand Mr. Dawn? Have they forgotten that he could buy even this entire building?" said another man who I thought was Jasper's assistant.
Well... everyone in Jasper's circle had similar personalities. Jasper himself, ever since his company—JD Company—became successful and skyrocketed into the spotlight, had become even more arrogant.
"So he wanted to buy this entire building?" Shana clenched her jaw and was about to get up, but I stopped her.
"Let him be, Shana... we'd better take a look at what's being auctioned tonight. Who knows, I might find something I like," I said, making Shana widen her eyes.
"Well... our Dr. Foxx has never been this interested in an auction. What's going on, if I may ask?"
I smiled. "I want to buy something for Ale. She's still in town taking care of Grandma's funeral, and I want to thank her."
"Oh... I forgot to say this in person, my condolences for your loss, Xesha. I'm sorry I couldn't be there."
"It's okay, Shana. You sent us such a large bouquet of flowers and so many other things. That's more than enough."
She pulled me into an embrace and we began to focus our attention on the event. Just then, something caught my eye. It was a charming red diamond bracelet. It was called the "Blood-veined Diamond," which was very special.
"According to history, this diamond is a symbol of promise, brotherhood, friendship, and close relationships. Like a blood oath in certain rituals," said the auctioneer, introducing the details of the bracelet.
I wanted that item. Ale, my older sister, would definitely love it.
The auctioneer opened the cover of the sparkling item. A brilliant crystal bracelet, with blood-red cracks inside.
Mysterious, but extraordinarily beautiful.
"The Blood-veined Diamond bracelet will open at fifty thousand dollars," he said.
Without hesitation, I raised my paddle to bid. "Fifty-five thousand," I said, hoping the item would be mine. Before long, another voice offered a higher bid.
"Seventy-five thousand."
Damn! It was Jasper. Was he trying to follow me?
[Unknown number: Do you want it, hm? Why don't you just ask me. I can win it for you.]
Tsk! Did he think he was the only one who could buy it? All this time he always said, "How much does a doctor earn? You can't necessarily buy what you want."
Well, I could, as long as it was within reason.
"Eighty thousand." Someone else raised their paddle and bid higher. The more bidders there were, the more difficult the situation became, but it only made me want the item even more.
[Unknown number: Why aren't you replying to my message?]
[Because I don't want to deal with you anymore.]
"One hundred thousand," I said as I raised my paddle and hoped there was no other higher bid against me.
Jasper... didn't you dare stand in my way. That item was mine. It had to be mine.
"Do you want me to get it?" Shana asked, but I shook my head.
"No, Shana. Let me do it myself. Don't worry," I replied, while continuing to watch to see if anyone else would bid higher.
"One hundred and twenty thousand," Jasper said again. It could be seen on the screen how he lifted his paddle calmly. His voice sounded confident that the item would be his tonight.
"One hundred and fifty thousand," I said.
Please... this time, let there be no higher bids. Please, please, please...
"One hundred and fifty thousand. Any higher bids?" said the auctioneer. "Going once... going twice... sold!"
Yesss!
I immediately typed a reply to Jasper, because I was sure that amount wasn't difficult for him to match. However, it seemed like he deliberately let me win.
[Thank you for not bidding higher. I was able to get the item I wanted at a lower price.]
Jasper didn't reply, but I could hear Helena whining because Jasper hadn't managed to get the item she wanted too.
"That special bracelet should have been mine. Why didn't you try harder, Jase? One hundred and fifty thousand dollars is a low price for you, right?" she said in a spoiled tone.
"Forget it, Helena... we'll buy something like that somewhere else. Even better."
I just smiled slightly at my victory this time. Regardless of Jasper's reason for letting me win, it still wouldn't make me believe in him again.
