Chapter 6
Roman
I tried fixing my eyes on my laptop screen so as to finish the work for the day but my thoughts weren't aligning together. My thoughts were divided and I was finding it hard to focus because my mind kept circling back to her.
One second, I tried holding myself back from drifting, but then in another second, my mind circled back to the way she moaned as my hand touched her skin, the way she looked at me when I was up close, the way those hazel eyes took me in--something in me sparked like an explosion.
My jaw clenched as I brushed a hand through my hair, but it was useless, and to make it worse, the more my mind dwelt on the short but unforgettable things we did together, the more my rod hardened.
Out of curiosity, I had ordered my secretary to give me a background check on her. When I got the feedback, I was surprised to know that she was working in our affiliated company that dealt with the sales of product and wasn't far from the main company building. I also found out that it was Cole who linked her up for the job but then a day before Cole's wedding, she was sacked. What was going on between those two?
"How come I haven't ever come across her all this while?" I muttered, brushing my thumb with my fingers, the memory of my thumb brushing hers lingered as the sudden interest of knowing her more grew in my heart.
'Gosh, get your act together, Roman.' I scolded myself, my jaw tightening as guilt crawled down my spine. 'It's not proper to be thinking about her. She's your nephew's girlfriend. Don't forget that.'
'Ex-girlfriend,' a treacherous part of my mind chipped in, quiet but insistent and somehow made it worse.
I was about to get up from my desk and go get a cold glass of water to calm myself down when the person who caused it entered my office.
"Hey man," Maxwell said, strolling into my office, like he owned the place.
"What do I owe for this visit?" I asked, trying not to pass the aggression to him.
Maxwell lowered himself into the couch at the center of the office, his brows knitting as his gaze swept over me, "What's wrong with you, man? You look like you've been run over by a horse. Or are you under the weather," he said, half-joking and half-concerned.
I gritted my teeth, holding myself back from punching him in the face. "It's nothing," I said, gulping down the cold water which seemed to reduce the heat I was feeling from inside.
I lowered myself to the seat across from him. " You still haven't told me what brings you to my office so early," I said, my voice cold as I crossed my leg over the other.
Maxwell threw a teasing look my way, a low smirk curling the edge of his lips. "Crystabel told me you stood her up," he drawled, his smirk deepening as his eyes gleamed with mischief.
My brows furrowed slightly, "Who's that?" I said,
Maxwell rubbed his beard, a teasing glint evident in his eyes, "Who were you with then? I came looking for you when I finished but I didn't see you, I was later told that you and a girl stepped out,"
I rolled my eyes in my head, and didn't give him a response.
With a sly smirk, he leaned closer and teased,"Mind telling me who it was? Did you have a nice time fucking whoever it was?"
My jaw tensed at his question. It wasn't just a nice time, I hadn't even gotten over it and I didn't feel like I would ever get over fingering her tight cunt and making her moan. I had never felt attracted to the opposite gender the way I did with Avery.
She seemed to unlock a fire that I had never had.
"Are you still here, Ro?" Maxwell asked, snapping his fingers across my face. "So, something did happen, who's the lucky girl who made you zone out this much?
Instinctively, my lips curled into a small smile,"It's none of your business...' I said, the smile fading as quickly as it had appeared, my tone flattening back into indifference.
I was tempted to tell him that he caused it but then deep down I felt that maybe it was fate doing it.
"I think it's my business. I deserve to know who could make you smile like that," he said, eyes narrowing with playful but serious intensity. "You know, if we weren't friends I would have thought you were gay. You aren't getting younger, man."
I shot him a pointed look, then reached for my phone, glancing through it to check the time. "If you don't have anything else to talk about, I will like to resume work," I said, my voice cold, standing up on my feet, walking back up to my desk.
"Ungrateful fellow," he muttered but audible enough for me to hear him.
I was able to concentrate on my work after Maxwell left, although his visit made my raging nerves calm.
I didn't stop working until it was a few minutes past noon, I stretched my tired legs, cracked my knuckles and stood up to prepare for a meeting that I have with my team.
I walked out of my office, going towards the convenience room to get a cup of coffee because I was going to need to stay awake for a few hours despite feeling tired.
"Good day, Mr. Hawthorne," my staff greeted me as I walked to get a cup of coffee.
I brewed my coffee and came out of the convenience room when my attention was drawn to the commotion downstairs. A few people stood in the distance, watching the scene unfold.
"We need to talk, Avery," Cole said, his fingers curling in his shoulders unmistakably.
"There's nothing to talk about you asshole," Avery said,
My feet glued to the ground as I watched what was going on, I wanted to intervene but I thought that it was better if they settled it by themselves. It was none of my business anyway.
I was about to walk away when I saw Cole gripping Avery by the hand, making her almost fall backwards. My hands clenched instinctively as I saw that she would have been injured if not that she had a good stamina.
"I won't let you go anywhere until you fix what you caused," Cole lashed out in frustration, his voice loud and clear.
I dropped my cup of coffee on the slab then entered into the elevator that would take me downstairs. Just when Cole was dragging Avery out of the building, I stepped out of the elevator, walking in long strides towards them.
I took Avery's hands into mine, making her step beside me. Her hand froze underneath mine as I held her soft hand tightly.
Cole's eyes widened in surprise at the intrusion, "What are you doing, Uncle?"
