Chapter 4

“I’m pregnant.”

The room went dead silent.

Everything froze. Every fight. Every shout. Every movement in the room came to a dead stop as all eyes snapped to Lily on the floor.

Even David’s hand, still half raised around her throat, went slack. He released her instantly.

“What… did you say?”

Lily gasped for air, coughing hard, but there was something almost strange in her expression now. A smile.

She looked straight at me.

“I’m pregnant with David’s child,” she said clearly. “Two months.”

The color drained from my parents’ faces.

But the reaction from the Evans family was the exact opposite. Shock, then something dangerously close to joy.

“She’s pregnant?” Mrs. Evans rushed forward immediately, helping Lily up like she was made of glass. “Are you serious? Show me the report!”

Lily reached into her bag and pulled out a folded ultrasound report.

Mr. and Mrs. Evans crowded over it, scanning every line with growing excitement.

“There it is! There’s the heartbeat!” Mrs. Evans exclaimed, her voice shaking. “We’re finally going to have a grandchild!”

Mr. Evans actually smiled now, clapping David on the shoulder like this was a victory.

“Well done, son,” he said approvingly. “Good job.”

David stood frozen in place.

His expression shifted rapidly, shock, panic… and then something else. Relief.

Slowly, he looked at me.

And for the first time that night, there was no pleading in his eyes. Only certainty.

“Ruby, you heard her,” he said. “Lily is pregnant.”

“That child didn’t ask to be born. We can’t let him grow up without a father.”

“So we’re not getting divorced.”

I looked at him, and he suddenly seemed almost laughable to me.

“So what you’re saying,” I said slowly, “is that I’m supposed to stay in this marriage… and raise the child you had with my sister?”

“David, do you even hear yourself?”

Before he could answer, Mrs. Evans cut in sharply.

“Raise her properly?” she snapped. “That’s our grandson she’s carrying!”

Then she turned on me, eyes filled with contempt.

“And you—don’t act like you’re in a position to complain. A woman who can’t even have children has no right to say anything here.”

“If you’re smart, you’ll accept Lily. From now on, both sisters can take care of David together.”

“And if you don’t like it? Then get divorced and get out. Stop clinging to a man you couldn’t even give a child to.”

Her words were vicious and cutting, stripping away what little dignity the moment had left.

My father trembled with rage. “You people are going too far—”

“Too far?” Mrs. Evans lifted her chin. “We’re the ones being reasonable. David has an heir now. If you try to force him into divorce, we’ll take this to court. And we’ll make sure everyone knows exactly how the Wilson family drives a man to infidelity—and how you treat a pregnant woman.”

Her voice sharpened.

“And I promise you, your company’s stock won’t survive that kind of scandal.”

Threats. Open and shameless.

My father swayed slightly, his face going pale with anger.

My mother gripped his arm, tears already spilling down her face as she looked between me and Lily—like she couldn’t decide where the betrayal hurt more.

Lily leaned comfortably into Mrs. Evans now, smug and victorious, as if the outcome had already been decided.

David didn’t stop it. He didn’t correct them. He just stood there. Silent. Complicit.

All of them finally showing their true faces.

I took a slow breath, forcing the storm inside me back down.

Then I stepped forward.

Right in front of Lily. My eyes dropped to her stomach.

“Two months pregnant,” I said quietly.

“Are you sure about that?”

I pulled out my phone. And pressed play.

Dr. Miller’s voice filled the room, calm and clinical.

“Ruby, regarding your sister Lily’s medical records—there’s something you should know.”

“She had a surgical abortion at our hospital two weeks ago.”

“The pregnancy at that time was approximately six weeks along.”

The recording ended. And the entire room fell into absolute silence.
