Chapter 8
HAZEL
That night, I cried myself to bed.
I was woken up by the ringing of my cellphone.
By the time I woke up, I had missed more than ten calls.
I saw that they were from my assistant, Tristan.
He had been working for me for almost six years now.
I made him very well and also knew that if it wasn’t very urgent, he wouldn’t call me so many times in a row.
“Hello, Tristan.” I began.
“Ma’am, the marketing director reported that three of our top clients have been poached by Mr Buford.” Tristan who had worked for me through thick and thin and was rarely emotional, now sounded agitated.
I scoffed.
Was this perhaps his revenge?
Because I refused to sleep with him last night?
I sighed and let out, calmly.”It’s not surprising.”
“But ma’am…”
“Print me two copies of what I emailed you and have the share transfer documentation ready, I’ll needed it later.” I instructed and hung up.
I had drafted a divorce agreement last night after Austin left.
That night, Austin came home.
He even fell asleep on the bed we shared.
I was lying sideways on the bed as I watched him sleep.
He must have been so exhausted that he didn’t even notice my arrival.
I scoffed.
How can he not be tired?
On one hard, he had to take care of his sick mistress, on the other hand, he had to do everything to fight me.
I never wanted him to be this exhausted so I decided to let go and make his life easier.
It was just that I couldn’t let him go.
I had loved him for almost ten years, more than three thousand days and nights but he would no longer have anything to do with me after today.
I will no longer be entitled to look at him as I did now.
I would no longer be qualified to love him.
Therefore, tonight was my last night with him.
With this in mind, I moved closer to him on the bed and gently laid my head against his chest, brushing my hand up his brow, I placed my finger on the bruise I had cause last night on his lip.
The bite mark was deep. He must have been in a lot of pain at the time.
I had been in a lot of pain too.
Pain and hate.
I moved closer and blew on the bruise.
Suddenly, his eyes shot open and he pushed me away from him.
“What are you doing?”Austin asked clearly in surprise and in a daze.
I had fallen off the bed from his push and hurt my arm.
I sat up, sadly.
“Do you have to be so rough with me, everytime?”
Austin didn’t reply, instead, he looked at my arm, where the little cut had started to bleed.
He suddenly got out of bed.
I saw him get the first aid box, he pulled me up to sit on the bed and then he began to treat my arm.
The alcohol cause the bleeding wound to hurt but I couldn’t really feel the full extent of it because of Austin’s tenderness.
His tenderness had masked all the pain.
“Austin…”
“Don’t say anything.”His tone wasn’t as gentle as his movements.
But I continued.”It’s really hard to believe that you truly feel nothing for me.”
If he didn’t, why was he treating my wound right now?
His movements stopped.
“We’ve been married for three years, we officially met when I was eighteen, I knew you didn’t love me but I always believed you would fall in love with me. I tried. I tried my hardest to make you love me. I felt happy whenever you’re happy. I didn’t complain about the way you treated me.”
I sighed.”But until now, you barely treat me the way I want to be treated.”
I felt so bitter and hurt.
“People always saw me as this strong girl who could do anything. I guess I let that get to my mind. I let that make me feel like you could love me.”
“Are you blaming me for our failed marriage?”
I shook my head.”I can’t exactly blame you.”
He raised his head and stared at me, the deep-set glittering so brightly.
“Be honest with me, Austin. Have you ever loved me, even for a little bit in all these years?”
I stared back at him.
He stood to his feet.
“I have never loved you.”
I shut my eyes painfully at how easily he said that.
But it was time for me to stop deceiving myself.
“Let’s get a divorce.”I announced.
I then took the signed divorce documents from my bag, then walked over to him.
Austin looked shocked.
“Let’s get divorced. You can go freely be with Sophia now. You don’t have to put up with me anymore.”
