Chapter 6 Chapter 6
RONAN
“I think it's best that we block the serpent's pass. That way the rogues won't have any way to get into Lupinia” one of the elders said. I sat quietly in my chair, letting all of them air their views - at least that's what it looked like. In reality, I was just bored. I hated council meetings. Never once liked them. But what choice did I have? I had to sit through this ordeal every two weeks, probably the only downside of being an Alpha I could think of.
“Ronan? Ronan???”, a voice snapped me out of my reverie.
“Huh?”
“You haven't responded. We're suggesting we block the Serpent's pass. What do you think?”, one elder asked.
“I'll have to think about it”, I responded, “However the Serpent's pass is an important trade route for our pack. Blocking it would likely cause economic problems for us”, I said. The room fell silent as everyone gave it some thought.
Then suddenly, there was a loud knock on the door and a servant barged in, getting on one knee.
“Your Majesty!”
“How dare you barge into a Council meeting unannounced?!” One of the elders slammed his fist on the round table in fury. The others murmured with multiple emotions written all over their faces; anger, annoyance and mostly, disgust.
I raised my hand slightly and the room fell silent. Then I stared at the young servant who was kneeling before me, his face staring at the floor.
“May I ask what is so important that you couldn't wait until after the Council meeting to tell me?” I asked.
The servant raised his head up and stared at me. His light brown eyes had something similar to panic in them and he looked like he had much to say but hadn't yet figured out how to arrange his words. The whole room waited for him to speak and after about three seconds, which felt like half an hour, he spoke with a grave voice.
“Your Majesty, Sara is gone”.
The elders exchanged glances and I didn't particularly understand what he meant - or more accurately, I didn't want it to mean what I thought it meant.
“What do you mean she's gone?” I asked, with my index finger twitching rapidly - a sign that I was getting angry.
“The maids tried to serve her food but by the time they opened her room door, she was gone - and so were her belongings too”
How dare she?!
My wolf was starting to stir up and it took every ounce of willpower I had to keep myself from exploding on everyone. Taking a couple of deep breaths to calm myself, I ended the meeting and headed back home to go take a look and see for myself. There was no way she'd run. She knew all too well the consequences of pissing me off.
As soon as I got home, I hurried over to her room and met a couple of maids standing there with a sombre look on their faces.
“Where's Sara?” I asked, staring at them. They all bowed their heads but none of them answered.
“Are you all deaf? I said where the fuck is Sara?!” I barked, my wolf's growl lacing my voice.
“I'm sorry, your majesty but…” the maid that answered paused, choking on her words. “...she ran away”.
I stared at them for a couple of seconds, clenching my fists so I don't kill one of them in anger.
“You're all useless” I growled, turning around to leave the room when my eyes suddenly spotted a folded piece of paper on the vanity table. Halting in my tracks, I gestured to one of the maids.
“Get me that piece of paper” I ordered. She rushed over to the table and back to me, handing me the folded piece of paper. I unfolded it only to see something like a letter written on it.
“....I, Sara Chen, reject Ronan Dune as my mate…” I muttered the words on the paper. A smirk appeared on my face and I began to laugh as I squeezed the piece of paper and tossed it aside. She must have been delusional if she thought that was all it would take to get rid of me.
“Guards!” I barked and in less than ten seconds, over twenty of my men had assembled in front of the room.
“Your Majesty” the echoed, all getting on their knee.
“My second mate has run away. I suspect she left the palace this morning so she probably can’t have gotten far.” I said, “I want the best sniffers and hounds to go after her and bring her back to me. She'll learn the hard way what it means to play games with me. Are we clear?”
“Yes sir!” The men echoed before heading out. Reject me? Pfft! What a stupid lady.
As I was about leaving the room, Carla rushed over, almost running into me.
“Goddess! Are you blind?” I exclaimed, as my hands caught her by the shoulders.
“Forgive me, my king” she apologized, her eyes darting around as the maids left the room. “Is it true that Sara ran away?” She asked.
“I hope not…for her sake” I responded, pushing her aside and heading out of the room.
“Damn that stupid whore!” I overheard Carla cussing as I was leaving. Nothing new there. “Good riddance to her though. It would be a pain in ass if anyone finds out that she's pregnant”
My steps halted and I paused to be sure I heard correctly. Sara's pregnant? Did I hear wrong?
I had to be sure. So I immediately turned back and headed back to the room. I walked in and met her pacing back and forth with a worried look on her face. Her eyes met mine and she was a bit startled.
“My King”, she stopped moving, almost like someone who was caught stealing. She was acting weird, like something was bothering her. And knowing how much she hated Sara’s gut, it was obvious Sara going
missing had nothing to do with it.
“Carla?”
“Yes, my king”
“Is Sara pregnant?”
