Chapter 3
Half an hour later.
Evelyn arrived at Scarlett Lewis's place.
As soon as she put down her luggage, Scarlett understood what was going on. "What, did you fight with Mr. White? Weren't you two planning to have a wedding ceremony? What's there to fight about?"
Evelyn paused, looked up at Scarlett with a bitter smile, "The wedding might not happen."
"What?" Scarlett frowned, "What happened?"
Evelyn briefly explained the whole situation.
After hearing it, Scarlett was so angry she rolled up her sleeves, ready to go settle the score with Benjamin.
"Scarlett." Evelyn grabbed her and shook her head, "Don't go."
Scarlett looked at her haggard face, her eyes reddening with heartache. "What are you doing this for? I was against you marrying him from the start. No matter how good Benjamin was, he was still a vegetable."
"And what happened? You insisted, gave up your bright future to marry him, and after three years of hard work, he cheats on you right after he recovers. If I'd known he'd turn out like this, it would've been better if he'd just stayed a vegetable forever."
Listening to Scarlett's complaints, Evelyn felt a bitter feeling gradually spreading in her heart.
How could she not know that marrying Benjamin might be jumping into a pit of fire?
But Evelyn couldn't forget how Benjamin looked when he promised to marry her, and even more so, she couldn't forget the warmth of the clothes Benjamin draped over her shoulders when she escaped from that hellhole.
She desperately tried to hold on, but ended up keeping nothing.
Seeing her dejected expression, Scarlett felt sorry for her.
"Alright, he's just a man, what's there to be sad about?" She pulled Evelyn up, "Come on, I'm taking you out to relax today."
Evelyn wanted to refuse, but Scarlett forcibly dragged her out the door.
Scarlett originally wanted to take Evelyn to a bar, but seeing her really resistant expression, she changed it to a club halfway through.
"It's fine, they have male escorts there too," Scarlett said, looking Evelyn up and down, frowning in dissatisfaction. "You look too plain like this, let's change your clothes first."
Evelyn opened her mouth but didn't object in the end.
She followed Scarlett to a nearby mall and immediately spotted a red halter dress.
The fitted design had a skirt that flared from the waist, moving like a flaming rose, carrying an effortless charm with every gesture, attracting everyone's attention.
Scarlett's eyes lit up. "That's how it should be! You were the campus goddess at our school!"
Evelyn smiled slightly without saying anything.
They made their way to the most famous club in Silverlight City.
This place exclusively served the wealthy and powerful, with both service quality and entertainment facilities being top-notch.
After entering, Scarlett was still muttering quietly, "So expensive, the minimum spend per person here is actually five thousand dollars. If I hadn't made money from this project, I really couldn't afford to come."
Evelyn laughed, "Today's on me, you don't need to pay."
She majored in AI and computer science in college, and although she'd spent these years at home taking care of Benjamin, she occasionally used her spare time to earn some extra money and had some savings now.
"No way, I said I'm paying today, don't worry about it," Scarlett said.
Hearing this, Evelyn didn't argue further.
Scarlett's family was middle-class, and now she worked as a project manager at a small company. Her monthly salary plus the allowance from her parents was enough to live comfortably.
As they walked inside, passing by a private room, they were suddenly stopped by the conversation coming from inside.
"What do you think Benjamin was thinking, actually wanting to have a wedding ceremony with that tacky woman, Evelyn?"
"Exactly, she was kidnapped to that kind of place and then rescued. If it were me, I'd be too embarrassed to show my face. Who knows how many men slept with her?"
"I have to say, though, Evelyn's face is really beautiful. I bet her body's not bad either. If Benjamin doesn't want her someday, I'd really like to give her a try."
"You've got a point. A woman like that isn't good for marriage, but wouldn't be a loss to play with."
"By that logic, doesn't that mean Benjamin's got a good deal?"
Scarlett was so angry at the filthy talk inside that she was about to storm in.
Evelyn stopped her and kicked the door open herself.
She crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe, her features looking even more strikingly beautiful under the lights, stunning everyone in the room.
"Evelyn?"
Someone reacted quickly and smiled in greeting, "What brings you here to hang out today?"
The others got up one after another, exchanging awkward glances.
Talking behind someone's back was one thing, but being caught by the person in question was another. Either way, Evelyn was still Benjamin's wife, and they were about to have a wedding ceremony to announce it to the world.
Evelyn smiled mockingly, "If I hadn't come, I wouldn't have known you all had such strong opinions about me."
"As for Benjamin... come to think of it, I haven't lost out either. After all, he's handsome with a great body. Just looking at him is pleasing to the eye."
"If you wanted to hire a male escort of his caliber, the price wouldn't be low."
Evelyn paused for a moment, then said, "It's just a shame he has erectile dysfunction."
Erectile dysfunction?
Everyone present widened their eyes, flashing with shock and gossip.
Scarlett even pulled on Evelyn's sleeve and asked publicly, "Evelyn, does Benjamin really... have erectile dysfunction?"
If that were true, then Benjamin wouldn't be worth having, no matter how good he was.
Evelyn had no idea whether Benjamin actually had erectile dysfunction or not. After all, in their three years of marriage, forget about sex, they hadn't even held hands or kissed. But that didn't stop her from making things up.
Just as she was about to nod, she suddenly felt a chill behind her.
Evelyn instinctively turned around and saw Benjamin standing behind her with a dark expression, the cold light shooting from his eyes almost enough to split her into eight pieces.
"I have erectile dysfunction?"
Benjamin sneered coldly, squeezing out these words through his teeth.
Evelyn's heart trembled, but she still tried to maintain her composure. "Yes, don't you know your own condition? But it's fine, medical technology is advanced now, there's always a solution."
She finished speaking and pulled Scarlett to leave. "You guys continue, we won't disturb you."
Scarlett wanted to stay and gossip more, but when she glanced over and saw Evelyn's expression was off, she immediately shut up and followed her out.
"You want to leave before explaining things clearly?"
Benjamin's voice chased after them from behind, like the Grim Reaper claiming a life.
Evelyn's scalp tingled as she tried to walk away quickly, but suddenly a force grabbed her wrist hard.
Then her vision started spinning, and by the time she came to her senses, she was already hoisted over Benjamin's shoulder as he walked out.
"Benjamin, what are you trying to do?" Evelyn's tone was urgent.
Benjamin's voice was flat, "It's my fault that Mrs. White has misunderstood. Today we'll go back and have a proper discussion about whether or not I have erectile dysfunction."
