Chapter 3 I ran away
Emily's POV
I did. I ran away.
It should have been easy for me to run away, especially when Eugene used to go to work and return in the evening.
So, one day, I took my bag and left. The problem was that I did not have my own money. All my funds came from Eugene, and I could not spend without his permission, so I saved whatever he gave me.
After leaving, I went to the train station to leave the city, as I didn't have any friend's place to stay.
Eugene didn't want me to have friends. I sat on the waiting seat for my train to arrive.
"Are you going somewhere?" I heard someone ask as he sat next to me.
The person had a hoodie on, so when he removed the hood, I panicked.
Eugene had found me.
But how was he able to find me? I never told anyone about my plans.
"Did you think I wouldn't know?" he said, a smile crossing his face.
He grabbed my arms so tightly that I could feel my blood withdrawing, making my hands numb.
"Eugene," I begged.
"You are coming home with me," he concluded.
I was pregnant at the time. It was my second pregnancy.
As he dragged me out of the station, I struggled with him. I thought that if I cried out for help, people would help me.
"Let me go! Please help me!" I cried, tears pouring from my eyes.
People turned their gazes toward us.
"He'll kill me!" I shouted again.
"Please go on your way. My wife is suffering from hormonal abnormalities. She is being delusional," he said.
"She is scared of giving birth, that's why she's running away from me. Please, Emily, do this for us!" He even held my face.
Then he smirked.
With that, he continued dragging me away.
How could people have believed him? Even the security officers believed him and advised me to do as my husband said.
There was no hope.
That night, I had another miscarriage because he abused me to the point where I saw my life flash before my eyes again.
Eugene apologised as usual. He even cut himself before my eyes and cursed the day he was born.
I didn't accept his apology. I just didn't have a choice.
I ran away again to the house of an old woman on our street. She was willing to hide me, but as if there were a tracker on me, Eugene found me and gave the old woman many stories to prove that I was insane and that he had never hurt me.
He even shed tears, claiming how much he loved me and how it broke his heart to see me this paranoid.
Good Lord. Why was I so unfortunate?
The old woman held my hands tightly and told me to go with my husband.
Defeated, I had to go with him.
He covered my body with bruises and forced himself on me that night.
I tried to escape again and again, but he would always find me and punish me even more afterward.
I tried to kill myself, and when he found me almost dead, he rushed me to the hospital, where we learned that I was pregnant again.
I laughed, mocking myself while tears poured down my face. Perhaps I was born to be this unfortunate. If there were fortunate people, there would also be unfortunate ones, just as every word has its opposite.
I started staying at home without struggling.
So he would return and force himself on me almost every night, and whenever I complained, he tortured me.
What a life.
I entered our apartment and filled the refrigerator with the groceries I had pretended to go out to buy so I could follow him.
He was never tracking me because, if he had been, he would have known when I followed him.
Someone must have been tipping him off about my whereabouts, and that person was the neighbour he was having an affair with.
I thought she was a good person, but I had misjudged her.
I had just finished cooking when he entered our apartment.
He sat in the living room and brought out his cigarette to smoke.
The smell irritated me and made me nauseous, but he would get angry if I reacted, so I pretended not to be affected by it even though it made me feel sick.
"Where were you today?" he asked.
"Nowhere," I answered.
I placed his food before him and was about to leave when I foolishly decided to confront him.
"Actually, I followed you to Trii Hotel," I said, my face devoid of emotion, but I saw his eyebrows furrow and his face darken in a second.
"Jennifer is your mistress," I announced.
"What have you been doing all day?" he asked. "Did you check my phone?"
"I did. By mistake."
"That is very brave of you," he uttered.
"I guess the reason you didn't know I was onto you was because you were with Jennifer. She couldn't inform you about my movements, could she?"
"And if that is the case, do you think I will give you an answer?" he chuckled.
"I don't want an answer," I said and turned to walk away.
I thought standing up for myself had worked.
I thought I had spoken my mind, and he hadn't reacted the way I had feared.
I thought I was finally getting better at fighting back.
But I was wrong.
