Chapter 2 Two
Kimberly.
Those words made my muscles strained , what do they mean by that? I don’t want anything that will alter my scholarship!
I didn’t reply back, I watched them walk away, but he paused and turned to give me a cold glare. For a moment it made my heart flinch , I wondered what that meant.
“This is what you get when you prove to be stubborn?” Someone muttered behind me.
“Maybe she thinks this is all a joke, she is going to realise soon,” a boy said, loud enough for me to hear. And series of laughter followed from the people around him.
I heaved a deep sigh, my shoulders slumping at my side. Do all these even worth it, I mean I can just quit now.
The bell rang and everyone started entering into their various classes.I waited for everyone to go in first, before walking in slowly.
“Ah. You must be a new student right?” The class teacher questioned.
“ Yes?” I nodded.
“Hello everyone today we have a new student with us, I will let her introduce herself,” she simply said,“I’m Miss Chloe, the English teacher of this class, you may now introduce yourself to the rest of the class.”
I swallowed, and then wrinkled my hands subconsciously. This isn't supposed to be me, I used to be bold.
“I- I uh, I’m Kimberly Smith, a scholarship student here, I hope I get along with everyone here,” I finally said and it was as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
“We don’t accept scholarship students,” someone shouted from the back and the whole class burst into an uproar of laughter.
“Be nice,” the teacher said to them calmly.
I bow my head slightly, too ashamed to look at their faces. I thought getting a scholarship was something that guaranteed high praises and everyone will look up to you. Oh well not in Grey high.
“Kimberly you can go have your seat,” the teacher said simply and I walked slowly with my head still bowed slightly.
I didn’t bother to look for a seat, I just picked the first one that my eyes met and as I was about to take my seat, someone stopped me.
She stamped the chair with her bag,“Seat reserved.”
It was one of those girls I had met earlier, I turned to my left to look for another seat, my eyes met Cassie, the one who I think should be the leader of their group or so. She was chewing her gum nonchalantly, her eyes were fixed at the front.
“Hey, hey,” someone whispered behind me.
“You can sit here,” she smiled softly, her round, quite chubby face making her look like a cute baby. She pointed to a chair beside her.
“Thanks,” I muttered, smiling softly at her.
The teacher started teaching and it was then he walked in, strolling lazily and nonchalantly into the class. All eyes were on him, even the teacher looked stunned. Anyone will be stunned. His well cut hair, his perfectly iron blazer, oh and the way he walks like nothing can bruise his ego.
“Hey Mr Grey, how are you? The class has started, you should go sit,” the teacher said simply.
And he nodded, as he walked towards his seat, our eyes met, our gaze was fixed for a while, his gaze was intense like it was burning me and I couldn’t help but look away.
The bell for the food break rang and everyone started leaving the class to the canteen.
I walked slowly into the canteen area and looked for a quiet place to sit down. A place that was deserted from others, because in this place, everyone was seated in twos and fours. I didn’t have any friends yet and I wondered if I would ever have.
I learnt that one has to pay to eat in the canteen, which is ridiculous because of the ridiculous fees they pay here, but I don’t think the students nor their parents have a problem with it because that would probably be their least problem.
Thank goodness my mum had forced me to bring food from home.
I sat down there for a while scared to bring my flask out because what if it’s one of their problems again, my stomach started rumbling.
“Anything that will happen, I don’t care,” I muttered as I finally brought the food out.
I started eating hurriedly, my mum’s meal always ‘bang’ and she didn’t disappoint this time. She said she had made this specially for my first day.
Just a few minutes as I started eating, I noticed someone moved away, I ignore. It isn’t because of me, I’m just overthinking, I thought.
More people began to move away from their seats and murmuring filled the air.
What’s wrong?
I looked only to see one of those girls standing in front of me, her arms folded across her chest and lips twitched up a bit.
“Miss scholarship student, can’t you see you’re polluting the whole place with your stinking home made food,” she yelled.
“Uh, I didn't mean to,” I muttered."It's just Tuna pasta.”
“Eww, ” she sneered.
“ If you don’t care about others, I’m going to show you how,” she snapped and she forcefully grabbed my flask away from me.
She threw every content in it into a thrash can nearby.
“No,” I gasped, my eyes already glistening and bright. Tears were forming at the back of my eyes.
By this time everyone had gathered around and they all started laughing.
I have barely even eaten the food, not even halfway.
“Now this is what you get for being nonchalant around others,” she snapped, jabbing her fingers at me.
And then she walked away.
I stood up, tightening my fist at my side. I wanted to scream and drag her hair, but my inner thoughts wouldn’t just let me do that.
And just as I was about to walk away, someone pushed me slightly, my body jamming another girl that was walking past with a bottle of juice. Most of the content spilled on me.
I gasped, breathing heavily, I raised up my head to look at her. Deep down I knew this was intentional.
“Keep your scholarship self standing,” she sneered and walked away.
What? It’s clearly not my fault!
Everyone around started laughing again, nobody even bothered to help with a handkerchief or something.
The back of my eyes started to burn, but no, I can’t cry in their faces.
I ran away to the bathroom, closing the door quietly behind me.
Geez! I was smelling pineapple juice all over. I took my blazer off and started wiping it off before it would dry up.
I stopped when I heard footsteps walking towards the bathroom.
“I feel all those are Xavier’s handwork,”one of them said.
“ She must have thought her scholarship is a dream come true, not knowing what goes on around here,” another one said.
“But girl who would even bring Tuna pasta to school, that thing stinks eww,” another one said and I could imagine the sneer on her face.
The others stirred in laughter.
“I doubt if she is going to survive it, the boy last term couldn’t help but transfer.”
I opened the door slowly, and they stopped and turned in my direction.
I walked out of the bathroom and stopped, I didn’t even know why I was standing there. They all pass me the blank stare and all of a sudden they all burst out in laughter.
I tightened my fist by my side as I walked away.
I finally got home, I met mum in the room, she came back early today.
“Hi Kim, how was school today,” her eyes glistened as she smiled at me.
“Hi mum,” I said simply.
She placed her palm on her jaw and that’s the position my mum chooses anytime she is excited for some news and wants you to tell her everything.
“ You look tired, but you’re going to tell me everything from your first day, I’m not going to miss it,” she warned.
“Mum, it was fine,” I said simply.
“Just fine?” She questioned, throwing her hands in the air.
“Yeah just fine,” I said, I can’t even bring myself to tell her my first day was such a horrible experience, that school it’s not what she thinks it is.
“Kimberly,” she snapped at my face,“Are you sure you’re okay?”
I didn’t even know I had zoned out.
“Yeah, I’m fine, I will just take a nap,” I said as I strapped my bag pack on my bag and walked into my room.
I lay flat on my bed and I brought out my phone. I saw a missed call from my friend Tara from my old school. I know she probably wanted to ask me how my first day went. She has been super hyper about it.
Before I could check my messages, something caught my attention. My eyes widened in shock.
“What??” I screamed.
A video of me on the school blog, with a caption: Girl brings radioactive tuna pasta to school and terrifies entire cafeteria. With different hashtags of Grey high drama, Foul food alert.
My heart thudded in my chest , I scrolled through the post to read some of the comments.
“Who even brings homemade food to grey high,” someone wrote with a laughing emoji.
“ I can smell the food through the video,” another person wrote with a crying emoji.
I shook my head slightly, heaving a deep sigh.
And just in that moment a message popped up on my screen, it was an unknown number.
At first I was hesitant to check the message but I opened it anyway.
I read the message to myself slowly,“Scumbag of the week, it is only getting started.”
