Chapter 3 Contracted to the Devil

Evelyn's POV.

Adrian Kane.

The man who controls everyone, including my Dad. And right now, the thought of getting married to him sent a shiver down my spine.

“Are you really getting married?” Eva asked, her voice a little bit shaky.

She said it's too sudden, she had never seen the man… no gifts, no dates, nothing, and I'm already moving into his home.

Eva is 22, and definitely not a fool.

“Is it because of us?” She kept asking a lot of questions, but I couldn't respond.

I forced a smile to my lips, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Don't worry about anything, Eva. I'll be fine.”

At that moment, the door creaked open, revealing Mom. “Are you ready?”

I stood from the bed, glancing through my room before nodding my head.

Mom wheeled the luggage downstairs while Eva followed behind her.

When I walked out of my room, Dad was standing with his arms crossed.

“Listen, Evelyn,” he called.

“Adrian is someone who doesn't make appearances like other businessmen do, but he has power,” he said slowly.

He continued. “He'll clear our debt in exchange for your hand in marriage, but I need you to do something else for me.”

“Keep an eye on him,” Dad said. “There are a lot of things hidden about Adrian Kane, and I need you to find out what they are.”

I blinked but couldn't say a word. I wasn't just getting married, but I also had to stalk and spy on my husband?

“But Dad–” I wanted to object.

“You have to obey what I say, Evelyn!” He snapped, cutting me off. His voice rose, making me jerk.

“If you don't want our family's name to come crashing down again and your sister having to go into a forced marriage just to save us again, then you have to do this,” he added.

I blinked at how quickly Dad changed like a green snake hiding in grass. He's threatening me with Eva.

He knows how much I love my sister, and right now, I couldn’t believe he was the one saying this.

“Do you understand?” His voice rose again.

“I do,” I said. “I'll keep you updated.”

With that, I walked downstairs, hugged Mom and Eva, then wheeled the luggage outside.

Outside, the same sleek black car was waiting. One of the men in black from before came down to take my luggage and open the car door for me.

The ride to my new home was a quiet one. After what fellt like eternity, the car finally stopped in front of a mansion.

The driveway alone looked like it could fit a small neighborhood. The building was so wide and flawless, it didn’t look real, more like something built to be seen, not lived in.

Even from here, it screamed one thing - Billllionaire

“Please head in,” one of them said the moment I got out of the car.

I walked inside with my luggage, and the realization soon hit me. This was the best mansion I've ever seen in my entire life. The mansion was enormous, quiet, and spotless, with marble floors, high ceilings, glass walls, and furniture that looked expensive but barely touched. Everything smelled like clean linen and polished wood, like the place was maintained every hour.

I kept looking around until a voice jolted me back to reality.

“Who are you?” A stern voice asked, making me snap my gaze to the side immediately.

The cook of the house, her apron gave her away.

“Hi,” I walked to her. “I'm Evelyn, your boss’s wife.”

Damn! How weird did that sound?

The woman laughed. “You are what?”

“Mr. Adrian Kane's wife’’ I repeated.

Her laughter suddenly disappeared, getting replaced by a gaze filled with venom.

“When did they start allowing beggars into the estate?” She looked over at me in disgust.

I was forced to check my dress. I didn't have the time to change into a better dress than casual wear, but did I really look so bad? Like a beggar?

Someone else emerged from the sides, dressed in a brown uniform. A maid.

“She might be the new maid that just got hired,” she chirped.

The cook looked over at me again. “You are a mere maid, and you dared call yourself the boss's wife?” She asked.

I took a deep breath and muttered to myself. “How do I explain this?”

I faced the woman with a small smile. “Look. Your boss should have informed you that I'll be here today. If not, just go to him and let him know Evelyn Voss is here.”

She scoffed. “And you dare try to order me around?”

Before I could respond to her words, the sound of a telephone ringing stopped the commotion in the air.

The cook moved over to the phone and picked it up, putting it to her ear.

After a few seconds of silence, she said. “Yes, boss.”

She moved back to me and bowed slightly.

“The boss said to show you to your room,” she said, gesturing upstairs.

“I'd like to see him first, take me to his room,” I ordered with a darkened gaze.

“The boss is not home at the moment, and I've been instructed to take you to your room,” she choked out.

He was not home, but he knew I was here.

This man was starting to scare me, and as I kept getting closer to knowing him, it became even more terrifying.

I followed the cook into the room that had been prepared for me without arguing.

A few minutes later, a knock came on the door. When I opened the door, the cook was standing with a white dress in her hands.

“The boss told me to get this to you. He said there will be no wedding, but you will need to attend the banquet in this,” she explained.

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

No wedding? No gown? No bouquet? No wedding rings?

As if being forced into this marriage wasn't enough, I won't be getting a wedding.
