Chapter 31

“Oh, this scene is simply too beautiful. I can’t believe my eyes. To be able to see such a wonderful sight…”

Assistant Hobson, who came in to deliver some documents, couldn’t help but exclaim at the sight inside the president’s office.

No matter how many times she watched it, she was always moved by this warm scene.

It’s only natural. After all, it’s like a miracle—a miracle that could never possibly happen, yet it truly happened right before her eyes.

Or rather, ever since Nick Arthur met Simone Milton, Assistant Hobson has constantly witnessed what she considered impossible miracles.

“Speak more quietly. Don’t disturb the child while he’s doing his homework,” Nick Arthur said, frowning slightly upon hearing Assistant Hobson’s words.

Upon hearing this, Assistant Hobson immediately put his hand over his mouth, making a gesture as if zipping his lips shut.

Then, carefully, she placed all her materials on Nick Arthur’s desk.

After completing all these tasks, Assistant Hobson quietly left the office.

Not long after she left Nick Arthur’s office, she ran into Milna Dillon, who was coming out of the elevator, looking very annoyed.

“Oh, Miss Dillon, how did you suddenly end up at our company? If I remember correctly, our company didn’t receive any appointment from you.” Assistant Hobson frowned, expressing his disapproval in the most obvious way possible.

She even thought that she should fire the receptionist. Otherwise, why would someone who was completely unimportant be working in their company?

Of course, the most important thing is that actions like Milna Dillon’s, which imply contempt, show a complete lack of respect for their company. This really upset Assistant Hobson.

However, Hobson’s rude remarks only made Milna Dillon even angrier.

If not for various considerations, Hobson would have been Nick Arthur’s most reliable assistant and confidant. She would have taken action right away to teach that woman a lesson.

“Get lost. I go wherever I want, and it has nothing to do with you… By the way, if you keep talking to me like that, I might have Ah Yan kick you out!” Milna Dillon crossed her arms and glared at Hobson, who was standing in her way, completely oblivious to the situation.

Hearing this, Assistant Hobson burst into laughter. She looked at Milna Dillon, who seemed completely unaware of anything, with a amused expression.

“Miss Dillon, if you really have the ability to do it, then go ahead and try!” Assistant Hobson retorted rudely.

After saying that, she seemed to remember something else and added, “But let me remind you—even if you manage to convince the boss to fire me, you still haven’t received any invitation from us, nor have you made any appointments. You barged into our company like this. We can hold you legally responsible for that!”

“Smooth-talking, I tell you what: if you’ve got the guts, then take me away! But I bet it’ll be you who ends up in trouble, not me!” Milna Dillon didn’t bother arguing with Assistant Hobson. She had more important things to do.

Yes, that’s right. The reason she rushed here so quickly was that she had received information from an informant, who said that Nick Arthur had brought a little girl into his office today.

This is something that’s never happened before. Even Jeremy Arthur and Alberta Arthur would seek permission before entering Nick Arthur’s office.

But this little girl of unknown origin was personally carried into Nick Arthur’s office by him. This made Milna Dillon, who hadn’t been too worried before, suddenly feel a sense of crisis.

Who is that little girl? What kind of relationship does she have with Nick Arthur? Why did Nick Arthur pay her any attention at all? To the point of going against his own principles?

Milna Dillon desperately wanted to know the answers to all these questions. She even wanted to know who the little girl’s mother was and whether she might pose a threat to her.

But she couldn’t possibly tell these things to Assistant Hobson. She knew full well that if Assistant Hobson found out what she was thinking, he would definitely laugh at her.

After all, this annoying woman had done similar things before. The reason she dared to do these things was simply because she relied on Nick Arthur’s trust in her.

“If you don’t leave now, I’ll have to call the security!” Assistant Hobson, who also didn’t feel like talking to Milna Dillon, immediately dialed the number to call the security team.

“Oh, I’m so scared. But are you really determined to make me leave? Although I’m completely useless, I’m here with a very important contract for your boss…” Milna Dillon said, taking out a document from her bag.

Obviously, she came here after thorough preparation. At least, the contract she handed to Assistant Hobson was one that Assistant Hobson simply couldn’t reject.

“I suppose I know that a contract of this size can’t be simply rejected at your whim. So now, go do what you need to do!” Milna Dillon pointed arrogantly toward the elevator, staring at Hobson’s assistant with a mocking look.

The frustrated assistant, Hobson, now had no reason to stop Milna Dillon. After all, a contract worth tens of millions couldn’t simply be rejected by her.

“In that case, Miss Dillon, I wish you success,” said Assistant Hobson. With that, he turned around and left the scene.

Of course, at the moment she turned around, Assistant Hobson couldn’t help but roll her eyes, showing her disdain for Milna Dillon.

Milna Dillon had no idea what assistant Hobson had been up to behind her back. She was overjoyed and walked toward the president’s office, wearing her high heels.

Upon arriving at the office door, Milna Dillon knocked gently, then waited expectantly for Nick Arthur to open the door for her.

But imagination is beautiful, while reality is harsh. Nick Arthur, who was focused on working on his documents, didn’t even notice that someone was knocking at the door.

It was Martha, who was doing her homework at the time, who clearly heard the knocking at the door. She glanced at Nick Arthur, who was busy with something else, then went over to the door.

The moment the door opened, Milna Dillon wanted to say something playful to Nick Arthur, just as she used to. But before she could speak, she saw the short-statured Martha.

Before she could even open her mouth to ask that little girl who somehow annoyed her, she heard the girl say crisply, “Auntie.”

“Auntie, hello. Who are you here to see?” Martha asked curiously, looking at Milna Dillon, who had a grim expression on her face.

“What did you call me? ‘Auntie’? Am I that old? You little girl, you have no manners at all!” Milna Dillon thought to herself. She probably knew why she didn’t like this little girl at all.

The little girl before her was just as unpleasant as she had imagined. Milna Dillon wished she could tear these hateful little girls to shreds.

“Auntie, your face looks really ugly…” Martha was terrified by Milna Dillon’s horrible expression. She couldn’t believe her eyes.

Martha, who thought of herself as very cute, was facing for the first time a woman who held such strong hostility toward her. This made her feel a little panicked.

“Auntie…” She looked at Milna Dillon helplessly, not knowing what to do to make amends for her mistakes. Or perhaps, she simply didn’t realize what mistakes she had made at all.

In Milna Dillon’s mind right now, the word “auntie” fills every thought. She grows more and more dissatisfied, with anger accumulating in her heart, waiting for an opportunity to erupt.

“Until when exactly are you going to keep saying that word? I thought, given how young you are, it would be difficult for you to understand people’s emotions. Don’t you know that I really hate that word? Or are you trying to deliberately annoy me?” Milna Dillon demanded rudely of the child.

Mirna Dillon, who’s always been so self-centered, how could she possibly understand the feelings of a little girl at that moment? The fact that she didn’t start yelling at her was already a sign of good manners.

“I… I don’t know, I really don’t know. Auntie, I’m so sorry that you’re upset by this word.” Martha looked at Milna Dillon with tearful eyes. She was truly frightened.

“Ugh…” Martha felt really wronged. She had only wanted to help Milna Dillon, yet all she got was complaints.

This greatly undermines children’s enthusiasm, especially since Milna Dillon’s attitude isn’t exactly positive either.

“Crying, crying… Why are you crying? If anyone saw this, they’d think I’ve done something to hurt you! You’re so young—how can you be so scheming?” Milna Dillon grew increasingly annoyed. She pushed Martha aside and went inside.

Crying Martha heard Milna Dillon say that she was scheming. Although she wasn’t entirely sure what that word meant, her intuition told her that it wasn’t a nice word at all.

Thinking this way, she felt even more sad. At that moment, she missed Simone Milton even more.

She couldn’t help but think that if Simone Milton were still alive, she certainly wouldn’t have encountered such a strange aunt, nor would she have been scolded in such a rude manner.

The more she thought about it, the sadder she became. Unable to suppress the sadness and fear in her heart, Martha burst into tears: “Ugh, Mommy, I want my mommy… Where are you? I’m so scared… Martha isn’t a bad child…”

Such crying finally caught the attention of Nick Arthur, who was working nearby. He looked up to see what was happening.

As expected, he saw Milna Dillon walking toward him, with a confident expression on her face.

In fact, it’s not even clear whether Milna Dillon did it on purpose. She blocked Martha behind her, preventing Nick Arthur from seeing how Martha was doing at that moment.

“Hey, Ayen. I came to find you as soon as I got back to the country. Aren’t you touched? Surprised?” Milna Dillon said this while leaning gently against the desk, trying to accentuate her figure in hopes of attracting Nick Arthur’s attention.

Nick Arthur’s expression didn’t change at all. He stood up and walked slowly toward Milna Dillon.

Just when Milna Dillon wondered what Nick Arthur might do to her, and when Nick Arthur was completely captivated by her, the man before her simply walked past her.

The smile on her face immediately froze. She couldn’t quite understand what was going on at that moment.

But when she turned around, all the questions were answered. Nick Arthur wasn’t attracted to her at all. What drew him was the sound of Martha crying behind her.

“What happened? Martha, please don’t cry. Tell uncle what happened. Uncle will definitely help you get justice!” Nick Arthur, who hadn’t paid any attention to what was happening at the door earlier, awkwardly wiped Martha’s tears away.

Speaking of which, although he wasn’t sure exactly what had happened to make Martha, who had been in a good mood earlier, break down and cry, his intuition told him that it must be related to Milna Dillon in some way.

Masha, who couldn’t stop sobbing, was finally calmed down by Nick Arthur. As Nick held her in his arms, she felt a sense of security that was completely different from the one she felt when Simone Milton was around.

Perhaps this is the power of fatherly love?

Although Martha had never experienced what’s called “fatherly love” throughout her entire life.

But in her imagination, her father should be tall like Nick Arthur, someone who could appear at any moment to help her when she needed it.

“Well, our Martha is such a good girl! Now it’s time to tell Uncle what exactly happened that made you cry so much.” Nick Arthur said this while gently tickling Martha’s nose.

Martha, whose emotions had finally settled down, felt very embarrassed. She didn’t dare to look up and see what Nick Arthur’s expression was like right now.

But at the same time, she didn’t dare to find out how Milna Dillon was doing now. She shook her head and ultimately didn’t say anything about the things Milna Dillon had said before.

“No… I just miss Mom a little. She’s not here right now, and I feel so lonely…” Martha said, her gaze drifting toward Nick Arthur.

The reason she didn’t complain directly was that she didn’t want to cause Nick Arthur any trouble. If she caused him too much trouble, she would feel extremely guilty.

After all, before leaving, Simone Milton went to see her in secret, talked to her, and told her to listen carefully to Nick Arthur and not cause him any more trouble.

Martha thinks of herself as a good little girl, so she won’t cause any trouble for Nick Arthur. Therefore, she won’t do it at all.

However, Martha’s attempts to hide things didn’t win Milna Dillon’s understanding or even approval.

In Milna Dillon’s eyes, Martha not telling her about what had just happened was clearly an attempt to win her over through deception. It was a very scheming move on Martha’s part.

She thought: This scheming little girl is trying to use this comparison to show Nick Arthur just how inferior she is.

In her opinion, if Martha didn’t want to complain, she shouldn’t have cried out loud in the first place. Since she cried, it’s clear there’s a problem, and she’s trying to make Nick Arthur see her in a bad light.

The more Milna Dillon thought about it, the more disgusted she felt. She wanted to expose the true nature of this little girl right away. But when she saw Nick Arthur’s gentle expression, she felt extremely jealous.

Milna Dillon took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. With a smile, she said to Nick Arthur, “After all, we were once engaged. Now that I’m here to see you, you should at least take me out for a meal, right?”

“I’m sorry, but I might not be available. Besides, I don’t think we have very close relationships.” Nick Arthur stated these facts coldly, with no desire to get involved in any emotional entanglements with Milna Dillon.

Not even a little bit of it—he didn’t want any at all.
