Chapter 3 Unlocked secrets

Axel’s POV

Run. Whenever you’re in trouble, run. Don’t pause to take a breath. Don’t look back-never look back. Until you’re safe, keep running.

It rang in my head, incessantly-the need to survive, to outrun my pursuers. When Granny Tia-the only woman who showed me kindness in the entire pack led me to the path of freedom, the last thing I thought I’d be doing was running.

“Catch him!”

“Don’t let him get away!”

“Run faster!”

I could hear my pursuers yell. I am an Omega, the weakest member of the pack but danger sharpened my senses as I clenched my little bag like never before. I ran, my feet pounding the woods and the trees blurred.

My lungs hurt-as if they were on fire, every snap of a twig, rustle of leaves ignited even more fear in me. Growls and snarls echoed through the empty spaces, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand erect.

A branch slapped me across the face and I stumbled, my vision clouding for a moment. I dragged myself up but a sharp pain tore through me, I had twisted my ankle.

‘No, no! please no, not today.’ I begged whatever deity who was listening.

In desperation, I lunged forward, getting rid of all common sense and ran painfully towards a cliff. A dark shape loomed ahead, my heart sank. The moon glistened, revealing a steep muddy part and without thinking-I threw myself at it.

I groaned in pain as I tumbled, rolled and slid giving a chaotic view of blur mud, leaves and the chilling darkness. I lay there for a moment, absorbing all the pain, but the echoes of snarls and yips reminded me of my task-to run.

I sprinted on my foot, trying to find a path in the darkness. Years back when my parents died, I thought it was the end of the world for me but Granny Tia treated me like her own child, and then I met Riven, he made me feel wanted, alive and loved.

Today, I’m limping through the woods, running for my life, leaving behind the life I ever knew. As I ran, mud squelched around me and the snarls grew fainter. I felt relieved-I had lost them.

My body throbbed with pain, a sign that I was still alive and I knew I needed to keep moving but where? After walking for some painful minutes, I followed the sounds of flowing waters and found a stream.

Without thinking; I darted towards it, unaware of the dangers lurking.

“Hello Princess.” A baritone voice called out.

My heart sank and as I shakily turned around, I saw a dozen werewolves right behind, they’d found me. A heavy blow sent me spiraling to the ground and I spat out a mouthful of blood, only to look up and see that I was surrounded.

Their bloodthirsty eyes glowed in the dark, the leader-a fiery looking beast with razor-sharp claws stepped forward, ready to attack.

“Please-please.” I begged, weakly.

He lunged at me, his claws swiping through the air and I tried to dodge but he caught me, sending me rolling few meters away.

“You thought you could outrun us?” he asked loudly, mockery rich in his tone and the others laughed.

I was pinned down and he dug his claws into my shoulders, I cried out in pain, he kicked me repeatedly and the others joined in, laughing as they did-they termed it a good sport.

I felt a searing pain as my head was dashed across a cold stone, they held me and I screamed in protest, trying to break free but he suddenly dug his jaws around my arm, his teeth sank deeper, making my world go completely dark.

Discarded like a piece of thrash, my disoriented body throbbed with pain. “Who are you and why are you doing this to me?” I asked, barely audibly.

“I am your worst nightmare and the one who will end your life.” A feminine vicious voice called out.

I struggled to keep my swollen eyes open, my mouth was filled with the metallic taste of blood-mine. “Amelia?”

“Yes, that’s me. I know you’re wondering why and how, I’ll save you the stress and tell you since you’re about to die.” She uttered, a wicked grin plastered on her face.

“Why would you-“

“For starters, I don’t like you, I’ve always known there’s something unpleasant about you and then I caught whiff of information that you’re hitting on my mate. I was infuriated, how dare a lowly omega share my mate with me? But then I waited for the perfect moment to have you humiliated.” She narrated and paused to give me q moment for it to sink in.

I always knew she loved Kael but I gave it no thought since-

“Who did you think gave Alpha Kaid the tip off about your steamy scene with Kael? I did!” She recounted, graciously feeding off my painful expressions.

“That’s not all, I pushed for your trail and if you hadn’t thought of escaping, I’d have you murdered in prison but you did which makes my work easier if you ask me.”

She halted and squatted before me, grabbing a handful of my hair and ignoring my cries of pain.

“I have to work my way to the top, become the Luna and powerful enough to gain a spot in the famously rumored Magic Academy which has been my dream for forever and no one is going to stop me, not even you are going to stand in the way of that.” She added, quite dreamily.

“Magic Academy? What’s that?” I stuttered, confused.

She scowled at me like I was some imbecile and chuckled evilly. “No need to know, you’ll be dead. Kill him.” She ordered the men.

“No-no please don’t.” I begged, horrified as they closed in on me. The leader of the gang flashed his killer teeth at me, his killing intent imposing.

I grabbed my bag which was with me this whole time and hugged it tightly as death stealthily approached. He lunged forward and I closed my eyes, ready to greet death as an old friend when suddenly, the keepsake-pocket watch glowed with an insanely blinding light which forced my eyes open and as I stared at the vastness, a force jerked me into a different dimension-giving in to the darkness that wooed me.
