Chapter 7 Chapter Seven
Axel's POV
When Alex told me of Kai's strength I thought he was exaggerating but when I witnessed it firsthand, it was a far cry from the truth. Watching the sword snap into half blew my mind and Kai didn't look the least affected, now I understood why he was upset when an omega like me bumped into him.
“I hope to never offend him.” I told Alex who readily agreed with me.
When the whole fight was over, we decided it would be best to retreat to our room, but we were stopped by Kai.
Alex and I held our breath but when I saw he posed no threat, I tried to compliment him which ended with me being insulted and threatened.
“I see you came to see the fight, you're settling in just fine aren't you?” Grey said with a loud voice as he walked up to us.
“Hi.” I greeted, quietly.
“Alpha Kai just threatened us both.” Alex blurted and I fought the urge to punch him.
Grey just chuckled. “Thats interesting, you've been here less than a day and you've managed to piss Kai off twice, what have you done now?”
“Nothing.” I confessed.
“Come, I'll walk you to your dorm room.” Grey offered amd we happily took his offer.
“You said I still have to get properly sorted tomorrow right?” I asked him, suddenly remembering.
“Yes. I'm afraid you have quite the busy day ahead of you Axel. You'll get a tour of the important places in the Academy, you'll have to explore the rest yourself, you'll get the schedule for your classes and lessons, your teachers and a few mentors. Alex will catch you up on the rest.” Grey explained.
“Oh, okay.” I responded.
Truthfully, I'm exhausted both mentally and physically. It's hard to make sense of how I almost died but instead transmigrated to a place where mythical creatures are very real.
When we arrived at our dorm, the two other roommates were already in and they weren't exactly as warm and cheerful as Axel. They said a brief hello and introduced themselves as Devon and Trent.
I went to bed, exhausted and that night I had a nightmare about being almost killed by Amelia and Alpha Kaid was also there with Kael, they were mocking and calling me a maggot, orphan and useless piece of trash.
I woke up startled, covered in my own sweat and walked out of the dorm to get some fresh air. The night sky looked more beautiful than anything I'd ever set eyes on. My thoughts ran wild, I don't know my origins or who my parents were but the sorting fountain indicating I'm half human meant one of my parents was human.
I had so many questions, how did a human and werewolf have a child together? Why does my mother have a keepsake that leads to a place where only the strongest in the world can get into? What does this mean for my future? Why do I feel attracted to the most dangerous person in this Academy? Does this mean I'm safe for now? Will Kael look for me?
I fell asleep in no time and luckily; Alex came looking for me by dawn and woke me up. It was a really close shave because I heard afterwards that we barely had left when Kai was spotted in the area.
Alex escorted me to the principal's office. Shockingly; the principal was a beautiful woman with overflowing hair that swept the ground along with her long robe. Her presence alone caused the noise out of the room and she laughed effortlessly with an aura of unbearable pressure rolling off her.
“Grey would fill you in on all necessary details, inside that brochure contains your classes, venue and all you'd need.” She explained.
“Thank you ma'am.” I answered her, politely.
“It's Principal Lunaria to you.” She corrected me.
“Thank you Principal Lunaria.” I corrected myself.
She smiled warmly at me even after we've long left her office, the scent of winter rain, smoke and ancient magic reeked around.
My first class of the day was potions and Axel sat beside me. It was interesting as Professor Polites; a vampire taught us how to brew a simple antidote that can be used to treat dizziness and nausea. Alex took it upon himself to explain that the professor is known to be the nicest but looks absolutely pale.
I had three more classes; Defense, where we were taught the basics of defense and I chose swordsmanship because it looks easier. Leadership; where we were taught history of all supernatural races and finally, Elemental magic where we get to see what elements we can control and manipulate to our wills.
It was an eventful day and of course Grey appeared to lead a bunch of us to the sorting hall; Arcane Hall. The hall was covered in prisms that reflected beauty and shades of soothing colors.
There was a higher platform where others would stand and watch while a glowing rune stood in the middle of the hall. All you have to do is touch it and whatever it glows with or reflected shows what hidden powers you have.
Alex told me the Rune was called the ‘Aether Prism’. When approached, it floated around a towering crystal structure inches above the ground, cracked in places and alive with smaller drifting runes that seemed to rearrange themselves constantly.
The first student in-line stepped forward and touched the Aether Prism. It reflected a bestial transformation, it cracked loudly and a blood shaped image appeared signifying the student carried an elemental supremacy and dragon blood, Axel took the liberty of explaining all these to me.
The student received an Obsidian ice scale on her arm, showing she had ice elementals. Weredragons rejoiced at this news and welcomed her heartily.
Other students stepped forward, some were faces with special powers, dragons, even giants with morphing abilities, shadow manipulators, rune masters, spell architects, curse weavers, forest witches and then it was my turn.
I stepped forward and touched the Prism like others did and the Prism's light dimmed and it went silent after a screeching sound. The runes stopped moving and the hall went completely silent.
Then it began to glow with a soft steady light, like a lantern about to go off then it stopped. The entire hall was still silent and I looked at the Principal. There was a dead expression in her eyes and she shook her head.
“Human, no abilities. Just human.” She announced.
There were numerous gasps in the room and I felt disgusted stares directed towards me. Alex stepped forward and grabbed my arm, pulling me closed to himself and Grey also appeared beside me.
“Let me escort you to somewhere safe.” He offered.
I was confused but I nodded, not knowing what to do and as we walked away, I felt an intense stare, I looked back to see a pair of red flowing eyes stare back at me, he looked so familiar and when he stepped out of the darkness, I recognized him.
“Kai.” I breathed and he barred his teeth at me.
Grey and Axel hurried me away and we went to the Principal's office.
“Why are we here?” I asked Grey.
“Not in a thousand years have we had a human in the academy. They don't even know this place exists. The principal asked that you wait here for her. Alone.” Grey noted, he and Alex left the office, leaving just me behind.
I had no idea how much time had passed because I was too engrossed in my thoughts. Trying to figure out what the Prism's announcement of me meant.
“Axel, do you know why I asked you to wait here?” Principal Lunaria's firm voice rang as she walked into the office and majestically to her seat. She wasn't smiling, her face was neutral.
“Because I'm human?” I asked, a bit sarcastically.
“We seldom get humans in our academy, it is-”
“I'm a werewolf, an omega though it's not the strongest of all. I've had connections with my wolf, no matter how minute it is.” I interrupted, feeling uneasy.
Irritation flickered briefly in Principal Lunaria's eyes and I immediately regretted interrupting her.
“I'm sorry I interrupted you.” I quickly apologized.
Silence hung heavy in the room and with a gentle wave of her hand, a goblet appeared on the table, its contents were bubbling with what looked like molten lava and she drank from it like it was water.
“You're predominantly human, there's nothing special about you. Though a sentient part of you carries the werewolf genes and legacy, it isn't anything remarkable or worthy of being chosen to be here.” She paused to see if I was listening.
“The Academy has been in existence for centuries and only the most special of all races are chosen to be here, because it helps shape their future. Everyone who graduates from here becomes legends, it's not a place for mediocrity.” She continued, a cold smile touching her lips.
“You get here by two ways, either activate your keepsake which is only given to individuals with promising futures or the ancient forces of nature chose you themselves. But you, you activated a keepsake and how it fell into the hands of an ordinary half-blood wolf is a mystery.”
I shifted uncomfortably on the chair I sat on. “My parents are dead, the keepsake belonged to my mother.”
“Fate cannot be wrong, we can't kick you out of the academy but this place is not for the weak, even the strong strive to survive not to talk of a feeble human.” She intoned, flatly.
Her words cut deeper than a dagger but I swallowed my humiliation.
“I can't underestimate a human, maybe the gods have something planned for you, survive this place and maybe someday the world will fear your name, fail and the world will forget you ever existed. You may leave. I'll keep a close eye on you.” She said, dismissively.
I lowered my head and every step taken felt heavier than the last, humiliation from her words clung to me painfully. Alex was waiting outside the office all along and rushed to my side when he saw me.
“What did she say?” He asked, quietly.
“That I am not worthy to be here.” I replied, trying hard not to let the crack in my voice show.
We walked back to our dorm room, quietly. Shame burned beneath my skin as fury coursed through my veins. I didn't even choose to be here, was fate playing an unfair trick on me?
Kael betrayed and deceived me because I was weak, he let his father torture me because I was easy to bully and another shot at a different life was no different. Even among the strongest in the world, I'm no more than a prey and worse I have human blood in me.
I have a feeling that things are more complicated than it seems. Alex didn't talk much even after we got to our room, I just faced the wall and forced myself to sleep.
Then, I had a dream; I was standing in front of the Prism, again but instead of the dim lights, it reflected my shadow and a flicker of light dashed through it. I heard some hantung and looked further closer to see that the surrounding runes now held vague images that held crystals in hand, chanting some sort of spell.
Mana flew into the Prism and the reflection morphed into a beast. I tried to look into it but a burst of flames threw me off.
I woke up with a scary and burning sensation. I looked down at my palm only to see a mark shaped like a Prism burning into my skin right before it disappeared.
