Chapter3
That wasn't a necklace or a magical artifact at all.
It's a cursed item; once the spell is cast, the person wearing it will be turned into a puppet at everyone's mercy. That's why I pretended to fall, snatched the necklace, and destroyed the spell on it.
However, in Elena's eyes, I was just jealous of her relationship with Victor and thought I wanted to control her life.
“Cole…” she said expressionlessly, “I can’t stand you anymore.” She waved her hand, summoning our magical contract.
"I want a divorce," she said softly.
"Then I won't bother you any longer, I'll be going now." Victor tactfully left, giving me a fierce glare as if to say, "You just wait."
“ Honey, don’t be angry. I’ll work hard to earn money and go to his house to apologize in person.” I walked over to Elena, but she pushed me away.
"I'm serious, sign it." Her eyes were cold as she looked at the contract and wrote her name without hesitation.
“From today onwards, we have no further connection. I will give you some money. Don’t come near me again.” She conjured a bag of gold coins.
"That's not how it works."
Even a high-level mage like her couldn't tell that it was a cursed item, so how could an ordinary person like me possibly tell?
“Before I call the police, I hope you can…” She turned around.
“No need!” I sighed. “If this is your true feeling, then I accept it.” I picked up the quill pen and signed my name on the contract.
The contract spontaneously combusted and burned to ashes.
This engagement is now completely over.
I left Robert Manor empty-handed, just as I had entered it three years ago.
“ Finally out of here.” Derek’s lips curled into a smile. “You are a disgrace to the Robert family.”
No amount of sarcastic remarks could hurt me. I had only one thought in my mind: how could I ensure Elena's safety in time?
It started raining.
I came to the Ash Valley monument, where Robert's name was inscribed.
I waved my hand and wiped away the dust.
My magical energy has recovered to the level of a high-level mage, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to crush that ruby so easily.
“I’m sorry to disappoint you. But maybe Elena will be happier without me.” I looked at Robert’s name and recalled the day he helped me break through.
"No, this setback is nothing." I rallied my spirits; I was determined to protect Elena in my own way.
At dinner time, Victor was invited to stay and have dinner with us.
"These are my parents and my brother, although you've known each other for a long time." At the dinner table, Elena formally introduced her family to Victor.
Mrs. Robert and old Robert looked at Victor with smiles on their faces, their eyes full of admiration.
" You are the heir to the Victor family?"
Victor introduced himself politely.
He took Elena's hand. "I've come today to propose marriage. I wish to marry Miss Elena and would like to ask for your consent."
Old Robert and Mrs. Robert were naturally overjoyed. The Victor family was not only a prestigious noble family, but also very powerful, holding important positions in the Magic Association.
“Okay! It’s a deal!” Old Robert extended his hand. “Then let’s hold the engagement dinner as soon as possible.”
"My sister has finally found a man who can make her happy!" Derek clapped his hands.
The servants were busy preparing for the engagement party and didn't notice that a short fellow had also sneaked into Robert's estate.
I created a magical clone of myself, making it look like a stranger so I could control it remotely and ensure Elena's safety.
The following night, the area in front of Robert's manor was filled with magical beasts. The rarer the appearance of these vehicles, the higher the status of their owners.
Most of the magical families in the Magic Association were invited to attend and witness Elena and Victor's sweet engagement.
"That's wonderful! I wish you happiness!"
The mages presented their gifts one after another, ranging from spellcasting materials to magical furniture. I followed the servants as they carried these items one by one into the warehouse.
"Please note that the dinner will begin promptly at 7 p.m.!" Victor tapped his wine glass. "Welcome! Welcome everyone!"
I looked for an opportunity to slip from the courtyard all the way to the second floor and then ran into the laundry room.
"Stop!" the butler shouted, "What do you want?"
“I’ve come to collect Mr. Victor’s change of clothes.” I nodded.
"You idiot, why are you only coming now! Go and iron it!" The butler pushed me from behind. "You can't afford to be delayed!"
I apologized as I carried the laundry basket downstairs.
In a secluded corner, Victor unfolded his clothes and used magic to search for clues.
"What is this!" I found a blank business card. There were no words written on it, but this was just an illusion. As long as I injected a little magical energy, I could see a contact address written on it—the Underground Magical Item Exchange.
"I see!" I finally understood.
Victor is also a member of the underground black market assassins, and he must have approached Elena specifically for the sake of that guardian crystal.
The necklace he gave me was an extremely vicious curse, but I have already foiled his plot.
He had to find another way to lower Elena's guard, which was to marry her.
"Heh! I thought you were pretty impressive!" Victor leaned against the door, clapping his hands with a contemptuous smile on his face.
