Chapter 5

Trevor decided to go see Daphne’s mother at the hospital since it seemed like that was the only way he could see Daphne.

Susan was very happy to see whom she thought was her very kind future son-in-law, she happily accepted the flowers he brought and also accepted his excuses for not visiting sooner.

Daphne sat by the corner, feeling awkward and still hurt.

She thought it wouldn’t hurt anymore if she ever saw Trevor again.

But it still hurt.

The pain of his betrayal was still very fresh in her mind. She still wondered how it could be so easy for him to leave her for Mabel.

Susan noticing the two weren’t speaking to us each other and just keep staring awkwardly at each other finally asked.

“Did you have a fight?”

Daphne and Trevor both stared at her, not knowing what to say.

“Let me guess, Daphne. Is this fight about the fact that he didn’t visit sooner. I’ve always told you to be more understanding, Daphne. Running a business isn’t easy and he’s here right now so that’s all that matters.”

Both still didn’t say anything.

“You two should be focus on making your wedding ceremony a success? Daphne, how are the wedding plans coming along? I hate that I’m stuck here and can’t help you out.”

Trevor ran a hand through his hair, recalling that they were indeed planning a wedding ceremony.

He had been too occupied with Mabel that he forgot to tell Daphne to halt all plans. He felt a bit guilty though.

Her mother seemed so excited for the event but that event couldn’t hold.

He couldn’t afford to lose Mabel again.

Daphne observed Trevor’s reaction and confirmed that he never truly loved her. She realized he only saw her as a stepping stone for his career.

It seemed as if he wanted to continue fooling her, while at the same time, have Mabel by his side.

Daphne found him so appalling.

Trevor’s phone rang. It was his mother calling.

“Excuse me, I need to take this.” With that, he stood and walked out of the ward to receive the call.

“Son, how are you doing?” His mother, Wendy asked, cheerfully.

“Good…good.”

“I hope you still aren’t making plans of marrying that Daphne? Isn’t it time you call off the engagement?” Wendy asked.

She never liked Daphne.

“Mom, I…”

“Son, I told you before, your career should be the only thing on your mind and if you should get married; you should marry someone who can be of great help to you, someone who’s from a powerful family.”

“I heard your ex, what was her name again, Mabel, is back in town. Mabel’s from a pretty good family. Maybe you two can get back together.” His mother advised.

Trevor sighed.

Even his mother thought Mabel was the better choice for him.

He felt the same. He had always wanted to be with Mabel.

Mabel was the better woman for him, right?

Then why does his heart feel heavy whenever he thought of Daphne?

Like he couldn’t let her go.

Meanwhile, in the ward, Susan was busy giving her daughter lessons on how to treat a man.

Daphne, feeling gravely irritated, stood up to her feet.

“I have something important to do. Tell Trevor when he gets back that we’ll talk later.”

And then they’d officially end whatever they had together.

She was told playing this game with him. And she was done listening to her mother. She had told all what her mother advised before.

Be the perfect woman. Do not nag, be his peace, be his safe place. Be his everything.

But what did that get her?

Trevor literally became the opposite of all that to her.

Back at the company, Darcy sensed tension in the office atmosphere as soon as she got in.

She had headed off to the company after leaving the hospital to distract herself but there seemed to be some issues here.

R&D department's Jax suddenly erupted, walking up to her and yelling, he was clearly dissatisfied with sales promises that exceed current product capabilities

He also belittled Daphne’s contributions.

Daphne bit her lower lip. She had come here to escape the pain of her personal life but she just had to face another issue.

A blow to her professional life.

Why was she being so unlucky these days?

Was she being punished?

“What’s going on here?” Marco asked, walking into the conference hall.

The employees quickly stood up on the arrival of their boss.

Jax greeted Marco, politely and in a calmer tone, he questioned Daphne’s Ismark project pre-sales proposal.

“I strongly believe the promised product capabilities are impossible for the current team and I think forcing the bid will ruin the company's reputation.” He explained.

Marco grimaced and then turned to face Daphne.

“So what do you think, Miss Smith?” He asked in a cool tone.

“Mr King, she’s just a non-technical salesperson, she can’t handle a project like this. Leaving this kind of project in her hands is a risky move…”

Marco shot Jax a look and he swallowed the rest of his words.

He turned to face Daphne again, urging her to speak.

Darcy calmly spoke, acknowledging Jax’s valid concerns

“But the pre-sales proposal accurately reflects customer requirements without exaggeration so I’m not being overconfident or anything. Current limitations don't mean we can't deliver by the two-month bid deadline.”

Daphne then proposed coordinating and pushing progress personally, guaranteeing timely delivery.

Jax still wasn’t satisfied. He just looked at her with disdain, he felt Daphne was being cocky and unwilling to take responsibility

But the boss seemed to be on her side so he had to let go of the issue…for now.

In the days that followed, Susan had her surgery and it was successful.

After taking care of her mother and cleaning her up one afternoon, Daphne stared at the sleeping woman with a smile.

She was relieved that her mother was going to be okay. After being so unlucky recently, as if she’s been cursed, Daphne had been scared she might lose her mother.

If that had happened, she would have lost the last bit of sanity she had left.

But thankfully, that didn’t happen.

And maybe, just maybe she wasn’t unlucky anymore.

She then decided to go to the mall, get them a few supplies and a little bit of shopping might lift her spirit. After leaving a note for her mother, she left the ward.

She hoped to be back before her mother wakes up.

Just as she got to the elevator, she found someone already inside.

He offered her a small smile. “Hello, Miss Smith.” Marco let out.
