Chapter 6
After Thierry escaped, only Jack and Annie remained at the scene.
Annie urged him, "Jack, you should run. The Henry Group people are ruthless. Someone offended them before and disappeared from the world that very night. They'll really kill you."
Jack remained unmoved, looking completely unconcerned as he said, "I told you, I'm not afraid of them. And I'll take care of your problem too."
Annie was so frustrated by his stubborn attitude that she stamped her foot. "I actually had a good impression of you at first, but now I realize you're just a crazy person who talks big."
She had kindly warned him, but this arrogant, self-righteous maniac rejected her advice. Jack had saved her tonight, and she'd been grateful, not wanting him to wade into this mess. But now Annie only felt angry with him.
Annie pressed on relentlessly, "Do you know how powerful the Henry Group is? And you, you dare say you can solve my family's problems? Don't forget, you're just a bodyguard I hired. What are you going to solve it with, your bulky biceps?"
Jack simply answered with certainty, "I told you, you're my woman. I'll solve all these troubles for you."
Annie was so angry she didn't want to deal with Jack anymore. She turned and walked through the company entrance.
"Don't follow me. I'm sleeping at the office tonight. You can spend the night in the car."
But Jack didn't return to the car. He stood alone at the entrance, standing guard to protect his woman.
Annie walked wearily into the company. Everything that had happened today weighed on her mind, but at least no one would bother her anymore. She could finally rest for a while.
Because she'd been working so hard all these years, she often spent nights at the company. She'd already renovated a room in the office into a bedroom for herself to rest.
The night passed.
The morning sunlight shone through the office building's glass onto Annie's face. She yawned and stretched lazily, looking completely exhausted.
She hadn't been able to sleep last night.
Annie hurriedly got dressed and washed up, planning to visit clients.
She walked to the company entrance and, just as she stepped out, caught sight of Jack standing at the door.
Seeing Annie approach, Jack noticed her slightly pale face and asked with concern, "Didn't sleep well last night?"
Annie was about to make a sarcastic remark when she was interrupted by her phone ringing.
The caller was Annie's mother, Calla.
Her heart tightened inexplicably. She and Calla had a big fight last night. Unless something major had happened, given her personality, she would never call at this time. Had Thierry already started his revenge?
She answered, and immediately heard Calla's excited voice: "Annie, Ms. Avery Ellis from the Ellis family is holding a coming-of-age ceremony in Philadelphia, and our family received an invitation!"
Annie froze, her hand gripping the phone slightly harder. If they could attend such an event, she could make connections with several major clients, and wouldn't that solve the family's difficulties?
Before she could speak, her mother's voice came again: "All the major families in Philadelphia are preparing. Several wealthy families didn't even qualify to attend. We're so honored to receive an invitation. I also heard that Ms. Ellis mentioned your fiancé."
Hearing this, Annie's face instantly turned pale.
Had Thierry really connected with the Ellis family?
If so, no wonder her family received an invitation.
Thinking about this, Annie couldn't help but fall into thought, worried this was another one of Thierry's schemes.
Calla went on and on, but the more Annie listened, the colder her heart became. Thierry's hateful face appeared in her mind, and her mood plummeted from the clouds to rock bottom.
Calla said in a tone that brooked no refusal, "Annie, you can't be willful this time. It must be Thierry who got us the invitation. This is a huge favor. You need to break up with that bodyguard right away and apologize to Thierry."
Hearing Calla mention Jack again, Annie couldn't help but try to clarify: "Mom, Jack and I really aren't what you think. I haven't fallen in love with him."
Calla on the other end laughed heartily: "Good. I've already had people throw all his stuff out. He's been fired and is no longer our family's bodyguard. Without our family, he can't even afford to eat. And he wants to covet my daughter?"
Annie was dumbfounded. She hadn't expected her to be so ruthless.
She immediately panicked: "I don't agree, and I won't apologize to Thierry either. Give up on that idea."
Calla's voice suddenly became stern: "Not apologize? If you don't apologize, what about the company's debts? The family is about to go bankrupt. Do you want everyone to end up homeless?"
Annie still refused to back down: "He's just taking advantage of the fact that we need him, manipulating us at will. Do you know how he humiliated me?"
Calla said helplessly, "But we can only rely on him. If not him, should we rely on your bodyguard? Besides helping you beat up a few people, what else can he do? Can he fight the Ellis family's people?"
Annie was speechless and hung up the phone hard. She actually understood this logic. Currently, the entire family had to rely on Thierry. She had no choice.
After hanging up, she looked at the man beside her who said he would solve her problems, and couldn't help but fantasize. If only he really had the ability, that would be great. But unfortunately, he was just a useless little bodyguard.
Meanwhile, Thierry sat smugly in the Henry Group's office building, holding the Ellis family's invitation in his hand.
He couldn't help but congratulate himself. Good thing he hadn't offended that old driver last time. He'd only spent a million dollars to get this invitation that all the wealthy families dreamed of.
He'd heard that Avery had specifically mentioned him. If he could latch onto the Ellis family's ship, wouldn't he have influence throughout the entire federation?
Thinking about this, he straightened his exquisite suit, fixed his hair, and looked at himself in the office mirror again and again, deliberately putting on a gentleman's appearance and saying, "If I could hook up with Ms. Ellis, wouldn't even the Ellis family be mine? I heard Ms. Ellis is a beauty who captivates anyone who sees her."
The greed in his eyes could no longer be hidden. Perhaps the fantasy just now made him lose sight of himself. He started showing off to the young masters of various wealthy families, making up lies, saying that Avery had personally delivered the invitation to him.
Everyone who heard this news showed the flattery and fawning he'd hoped for, which Thierry greatly enjoyed. His vanity was greatly satisfied.
He became increasingly carried away and even dialed Jack's number.
After connecting, his tone was extremely arrogant: "Jack, you must have heard about Ms. Ellis's coming-of-age ceremony, right? I'm a distinguished guest she personally invited, which means I've already connected with the Ellis family. Do you think Annie will obediently strip naked and come to my room like a dog?"
"By the way, does a nobody like you even know what the Ellis family is?"
