Chapter 2
Miles Hamilton flagged down a taxi, after reporting the hospital's address, he slumped in the back seat as exhaustion washed over him instantly. The bank card in his shirt pocket felt like a scorching iron; the one million inside was what he had traded for dignity, and it was the beginning of the thirty million he owed Bryce Kendall Pickman. She closed her eyes, her mind filled with the image of Reed Coleman. He was the first person to be kind to her after she ran away from her small mountain village, it was him who brought her back to the Bai family, and it was him who fought tirelessly to protect her when Samuel Coleman opposed. These five years, he was her light, her entire world. But now, he lay quietly on his hospital bed, his life uncertain.Samuel Coleman's company went bankrupt, and he also got into gambling, accumulating a huge debt. The debt collectors came to his door, and to protect her, Reed was severely beaten and never woke up again. The doctor said he would most likely become a vegetable, but Miles Hamilton refused to give up, even if it meant selling everything, even at the cost of everything, she had to save Reed.Arriving at the hospital, Miles Hamilton went straight to the room door, where Samuel Coleman was pacing anxiously in the hallway. Seeing Miles Hamilton, his eyes lit up, and he quickly walked over, completely ignoring her disheveled appearance and failing to notice the wound on her elbow, snatching the bank card out of her hand: "Miles, you're still so capable! Uncle knew you were sincere with Reed, and it wasn't wasted all these years raising you."His smile on his face was fawning and greedy; after speaking, he hurriedly took his card and left without a word of concern. Miles Hamilton watched his retreating figure, his heart growing colder bit by bit. But when he thought of Reed Coleman in the hospital bed, she forced herself to rally her spirits and pushed the door open, stepping inside.Reed Coleman on the hospital bed, his face as pale as paper, lips without a trace of color, eyes tightly shut, long eyelashes quietly drooping, looking extremely fragile. Miles Hamilton walked to the bedside, gently grasped his icy hand, pressed it against his cheek, tears silently sliding down.“Reed, I’ve brought the money. The doctor said you’ll be able to have the surgery soon. You have to wake up quickly, okay?” She whispered softly, as if making a wish, or as if comforting herself, “I’m so scared alone. I need you. When you wake up, we’ll leave here and find a place where no one knows us. We’ll live a good life.”She leaned over and gently pressed a kiss on his smooth forehead. It was her hope, and also the courage that kept her going.Meanwhile, in a pitch-black alley, Samuel Coleman was cornered against the wall by several tattooed tough guys. His stout body huddled together, his face filled with fear. The tough guy in the lead, with a toothpick in his mouth, slapped his head and said menacingly, "Samuel Coleman, the money you owe us, when will you pay?"Samuel Coleman trembled with fear and quickly smiled apologetically, "Bro, give me three more days, just three days, I'll definitely pay!"“Three days?” The sturdy man sneered, grabbing his collar, “I guess you won’t cry until you see the coffin! Well, I won’t make things difficult for you. Give me your daughter to play with my brother for a few days, and I’ll wipe out your debt!”“I can’t! Absolutely not!” Samuel Coleman shook his head quickly. Although he was not a good person, he knew that Miles Hamilton was the lifeline of Reed Coleman. If he harmed her, even if Reed Coleman woke up, he would not let him go.“No way?” The muscular man slapped him with his hand. “Your daughter isn’t adopted, she’s being raised anyway. What’s the harm in playing with her for a few days? Either hand her over, or I’ll cut off your hands in three days. Choose yourself!”The burly man finished speaking, turned around with his men and left, leaving Samuel Coleman alone crouching on the ground, trembling all over. He looked at his own hands, then thought of his unconscious son in the hospital bed, and his eyes gradually became fierce.Reed Coleman probably won't wake up, Miles Hamilton this bitch, keeping him is useless, it's better to sell him to those people, it can settle debts and save trouble. Moreover, Miles Hamilton is getting more and more attractive, he has long had bad intentions, but he was constrained by Reed Coleman, so he never dared to act on them.Samuel Coleman bought several bottles of white wine, got drunk, and staggering returned to his rental apartment. As Miles Hamilton just opened the door, he smelled a strong wine odor, looking at the drunken Samuel Coleman, she frowned and stepped forward to help him: "Uncle, don't drink anymore, Reed will be upset if he finds out."“Unhappy?” Samuel Coleman shoved her away abruptly, his eyes bloodshot, “It's all your fault! It's all because of you that Reed has turned out this way! If it weren't for you, how would I have ended up like this!”Miles Hamilton stumbled and hit the doorframe, gasping in pain. She knew that Reid Coleman had only been injured protecting her, and it was a constant ache in her heart, but being accused by Samuel Coleman still made her eyes well up.Samuel Coleman cursed and slammed the door, entering the room and leaving Miles Hamilton standing alone at the doorway, feeling cold all over. She cleaned up the mess on the floor, dragging her exhausted body back to her room, her heart full of despair and grievances.
