Chapter 3 The First Raven
The black mare’s hooves hammered the hard-packed dirt like war drums under the cold moonlight. Silas leaned low over her neck, hat brim whipping in the wind, his scarred hands gripping the reins tight enough to whiten his knuckles. Every jolt sent fresh fire racing up his left arm. Beside him, Eliza Kane rode hard on her sturdy roan, her deputy star catching faint glints of starlight as she kept pace.
Prosperity Gulch had already shrunk behind them into a distant smear of lantern glow and fading angry shouts. The town that had nearly become his grave was now just another bad memory on the endless frontier.
Silas risked a glance at his forearm. The black veins had thickened again, dark and ugly, pulsing visibly beneath the skin like living roots digging deeper for more flesh to claim. Each heartbeat brought a fresh wave of burning pain that made his vision flicker.
A bright blue box flared directly in front of his eyes.
```
[Warning: Marked for Collection – Active Phase Initiated]
[Your current Liability Balance (-2,135) has triggered enforcement protocols.]
[Debt Collectors have begun the recovery process.]
This means spectral agents are now authorized to manifest near you and extract payment through debuffs, Merit drain, physical decay, or direct confrontation.
[Minor manifestations will increase in frequency the longer you remain overdue.]
[The System is not your friend. Pay what you owe, Deadbeat.]
```
Silas’s stomach twisted. So that was what “Begin Collection” truly meant. The System wasn’t just keeping score anymore — it was actively sending bounty hunters after his soul, one shadowy piece at a time.
“Crowe!” Eliza shouted over the thunder of hooves. “Those black veins on your arm — they’re getting worse! You’re practically glowing with them!”
“Not glowing,” he snarled through gritted teeth. “Rotting. Every time my balance sinks this deep, the System starts collection. That raven back in the saloon wasn’t on my side. It was the start of the process. It just happened to jam that enforcer’s gun because he was standing too close to a walking overdue account like me. Collateral damage.”
Eliza’s eyes widened, but she never slowed. “So every time you get into a fight from now on, those things could just… appear?”
“Pretty much,” Silas replied, fighting the mare as she suddenly jerked hard left. “The deeper in the red I stay, the stronger and more frequent they get. If I don’t knock this balance down soon, they’ll stop being minor annoyances and start full-on hunting me across the Territories.”
The mare bucked violently. Silas barely kept his seat, muscles straining. For a split second, a shadowy raven made of swirling black smoke materialized on the horse’s ear, pecked once, and dissolved back into nothing.
```
[Minor Debt Collector Manifestation Detected]
[Effect: Temporary "Equipment Liability" applied to nearest mount.]
[Your horse will occasionally buck or veer for the next 10 minutes.]
[Collateral damage from your overdue account.]
[Enjoy the ride, son.]
```
“Damn it all to hell!” Silas cursed, yanking the reins hard as the mare tried to bolt sideways again. The burning in his arm flared hotter, as if the veins themselves were feeding on his anger and fear.
Eliza fired two quick warning shots into the darkness behind them, the reports cracking loud across the empty flats. “Then we’d better reach the Miller claim fast. McGreed’s men have been squatting there for weeks, running some shady operation. Clearing them out should earn you enough Merit to buy some breathing room — maybe even knock a few hundred off that cursed balance of yours.”
Silas nodded grimly, sweat trickling down his face and stinging his eyes despite the cool night air. Before he could answer, another notification popped up.
```
[Quest Reminder: "Balance the Books in Prosperity Gulch"]
[Current Liability: -2,135]
[Time Remaining Until Audit Storm Escalation: 64 hours]
[Objective: Reduce your Liability by at least 800 points OR secure protection from a high-Credit ally.]
[Bonus Objective: Expose at least one major hypocrite’s hidden Liabilities (progress: 0/1)]
[The System notes: Outrunning collectors is temporary. Eventually, every account gets settled — one way or another.]
```
A low, dry laugh that wasn’t quite human echoed across the open range behind them. The sound slithered through the night wind and made the black veins on Silas’s arm pulse in perfect, painful rhythm.
Eliza’s grip tightened on her revolver. “What in God’s name was that?”
“Interest,” Silas said, his voice tight with pain. “And it’s starting to compound.”
The mare bucked again, harder this time. Silas held on, jaw clenched against the fire spreading up his arm toward his shoulder. He wasn’t just running from McGreed’s men or the law anymore.
He was running from the ledger itself.
And the ledger had already begun collection.
The wind picked up, carrying dust that stung his eyes and made the black veins throb even harder. Silas could feel the corruption spreading, a slow, living thing that seemed to feed on his fear and exhaustion. He had spent years dodging consequences, slipping away from posses, and laughing off bad luck. Now the System was making sure he couldn’t run forever.
Eliza rode beside him in silence for a moment, then spoke again, her tone softer but still edged with steel. “You never told me how deep you really are. How long have those veins been there?”
“Long enough that I stopped counting the days,” Silas replied. “Started faint after the war. Got worse after every job I pulled. The last big one — the one that left a whole settlement burning — pushed me over the edge. Now the Collectors are waking up.”
He glanced at his arm again. The veins looked thicker, darker, almost writhing under the skin. The pain was no longer just burning — it had a rhythm, like a second heartbeat that didn’t belong to him.
Another blue box appeared, smaller this time, almost mocking.
[Physical Debuff Update]
[Black Vein Corruption progressing.]
[Pain level: Moderate to Severe.]
[Motor control in left arm reduced by 12%.]
[Recommendation: Reduce Liability quickly or risk permanent damage.]
[The System is watching your every move, Deadbeat.]
```
Silas clenched his teeth and focused on the ride. The Miller claim wasn’t far now — a low rise with a weathered house and creaking windmill. If they could clear McGreed’s squatters, it might buy him time. Merit Points. A chance to breathe.
But deep down he knew time was the one thing the ledger never gave freely.
The mare bucked once more, nearly throwing him. Silas fought for control, the pain in his arm flaring like a brand. Eliza reached out and steadied him with a firm hand on his shoulder.
“We’re almost there,” she said. “Hold on.”
Silas nodded, jaw locked. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could.
The night wind howled across the flats, carrying that dry, unnatural laugh again.
The ledger had begun collection.
And it was only getting started.
