Chapter 2: I'm Just Gavin's Mistress
Mia's POV
The cold wind from the balcony hit my sweat-dampened skin, and I couldn't stop myself from shivering.
Fiona asked carefully, "Mia, are you okay?"
I let out a self-deprecating laugh.
"I'm fine." My voice was hoarse. "I just slept with Gavin."
"Don't be sad, honey." Fiona's voice was full of sympathy. "How about we go get drinks after work tomorrow?"
I took a deep breath of the icy air, trying to suppress the sharp pain in my chest.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me."
I hung up and walked back into the bedroom.
Only a dim bedside lamp was on.
Gavin lay on the bed, breathing steadily, deeply asleep.
After leaving the Bell family, my mother and I were burdened with that massive debt of seven million dollars,to repay Camilla's necklace
To support my mother, I had no choice but to work at a bar.
I was harassed by a drunk customer and nearly dragged into the back alley when Gavin saved me.
His bodyguards broke that man's legs.
After that, I became his mistress.
He gave me enough money to pay off all my debts.
And I slept with him.
I never told him about my past. I even changed my surname from Bell to Green, taking my mother's name.
He only knew me as Mia Green.
My eyes fell on his face, that face that terrified countless people but could make me forget everything in bed.
A sharp, constricting pain shot through my chest.
For three years, I'd constantly reminded myself that Gavin and I had a purely transactional relationship.
Between us, besides sex and money, there was nothing.
I absolutely could not develop any inappropriate feelings for him.
Gavin was the sole heir of the Adams family, the richest family in the country.
And me?
I was just his mistress, not even his girlfriend.
Fiona worked at Adams Corporation, so her information was usually reliable.
Gavin was getting engaged.
This three-year transaction had finally reached its end.
It was time for me to leave.
I took one last look at the sleeping man on the bed, and while he was still asleep, I quickly dressed and left the villa.
Instead of returning to the apartment I shared with my mother, I found a 24-hour coffee shop and ordered the most bitter Italian espresso.
The bitterness of the coffee slid down my throat into my stomach, but it couldn't suppress the bitter taste rising from my heart.
I forced myself not to think about Gavin or that so-called engagement.
I started thinking about my internship, my salary, and how I could better take care of my mother.
When I left the Bell family, I had just graduated high school with nothing.
Then I met Gavin.
It was his money that allowed me to attend the best university in the country without any burden: Ashmore University.
Now I'd finished all my junior year courses.
I'd already found an internship with decent pay.
At least after leaving Gavin, I could still support my mother on my own.
After dawn broke, I went to school.
However, when I reached my dorm room door, I froze.
My belongings, from books and clothes to toiletries, had all been thrown out like garbage, scattered messily across the hallway floor.
My heart sank.
Among that pile of stuff, I didn't see my most important possession: my laptop.
I hurried forward and pushed open the dorm door. Immediately, I spotted the culprit.
It was Eva.
She sat at my desk, holding my laptop in her hands.
I hadn't seen her in three years.
She'd been studying high school abroad all this time. Camilla must have arranged for her to return for university.
Seeing me, Eva's face first flashed with disbelief.
"Mia?"
She shrieked, as if she'd seen something filthy.
"You bitch, you're actually studying at Ashmore University?!"
Soon, she let out a contemptuous, malicious laugh.
"I get it now. Did you become a whore to earn money? Sleeping with different men to barely support that thief mother, then managed to get into this university?"
I ignored her vile words and walked straight over, angrily snatching my laptop from her hands and clutching it tightly to my chest.
"This is my dorm room. Get out!"
My resistance seemed to enrage her.
Eva's expression twisted. She shot to her feet.
"Who gave you the guts to yell at me? Mia, have you forgotten how you were bullied like a dog by me at the Bell house?"
Eva raised her hand and swung it viciously toward my face.
I was faster. I caught her wrist mid-air.
Eva yelped in pain from my grip.
"Bitch! You dare grab me?! "
She shouted at the two companions standing behind her.
"What are you standing there for? Come grab her hair and pin her to the ground!"
The two girls immediately rushed over, one on each side, viciously pulling my hair.
Sharp pain shot through my scalp.
I kicked one girl's knee with all my strength, and the moment she loosened her grip, I scratched the other girl's face hard with my nails.
The three of us were completely locked in combat, our bodies crashing into the desk corners with dull thuds.
Our fighting and shouting quickly attracted the dorm supervisor.
She rushed over, panting, and without even glancing at the scratches on my face or my disheveled hair, immediately helped Eva up, her face full of fawning concern.
"Miss Bell, are you alright? It's your first day at school, and you've already encountered such an unreasonable student!"
She brought us to her office.
Eva and her two companions were politely invited to sit in chairs, while I was ordered to stand in the center of the office.
I sneered inwardly.
Over these three years, the Bell family business had grown tremendously, now one of the top financial groups in the area, second only to the Adams family.
Eva was the Bell family's young lady. Of course the supervisor would curry favor with her.
The supervisor plopped down in her office chair.
Her fat face immediately fell, looking at me with disgust.
"Mia Green, right?"
She flipped through the student roster in her hands, her tone full of disdain.
"I don't care what grudge you have between you, but fighting in my territory is unacceptable! Especially against a new student!"
She slammed the roster shut with a "bang" and pointed her finger at my nose, spittle almost spraying my face.
"Immediately apologize to Miss Bell!"
But Eva folded her arms and contradicted the supervisor's words, her voice dripping with malice.
"Not just an apology. I want you to kneel before me and beg for my forgiveness."
