Chapter 10
She gently approached Mona Mini. To her surprise, Mona stepped back two steps in fear. Marian White gently patted Mona’s clothes, then said with a smile, “It seems that with a backer like that, you no longer even address me as ‘Miss White’. But since you have a backer, why are you so afraid of me?”
Mona Minnie stubbornly retorted, “Who’s afraid of you? I just slipped.” This excuse made Little Barton laugh. Marian White glanced at him, then quickly suppressed her laughter. Marian White seemed to pass by Burke Woolley casually, then said lightly, “How was your rest last night?”
Burke Woolley smirked slightly, then replied in a proper manner, “Don’t worry, Miss White. I slept very well last night.” Mona Mini was puzzled. Had Lord Six not done anything last night? Why was this man still standing here, unharmed?
But the situation before her left her a little overwhelmed, and she didn’t have time to wonder why Burke Woolley was unharmed. Marian White nodded at his words, then said to them, “Stop standing around like idiots. Go do what you need to do. If you keep standing here, do you expect me to do all the work?”
After hearing his words, everyone quickly lowered their heads and returned to their posts. Mona Mini watched her give orders in such a domineering manner, and gritted her teeth with frustration. But soon, a sense of joy replaced that feeling: “Let you enjoy this moment of triumph for now. Soon enough, all of this will be mine.”
Marian White glanced at Mona Mini, who was secretly delighted with herself. She walked past her, seeing that Mona was still lost in her own fantasies. Then Marian asked, “Hurry up! Take me to meet your backer!”
Mona Mini coughed slightly, a little embarrassed, then followed Marian White away. Marian White glanced at Mona Mini, who was walking behind her with her head down, and shook her head gently. She had known all along that this girl wasn’t trustworthy. She never expected it to happen so soon. Someone she had raised herself would turn against her.
Actually, from what happened last night, she already had a hunch that she hadn’t only disobeyed Lord Six’s orders, but Burke Woolley had also injured Phoebe Evan from the Evan family. Although Burke Woolley spared his life, Jenny Evan certainly wouldn’t let this go easily. It’s likely she’ve already reported the incident to Lord Six. It seems today’s task won’t be easy at all!
Marian White’s expression was quite serious. If Lord Six demanded that she hand over Burke Woolley, just as he had done yesterday, she absolutely wouldn’t agree. After all, she had signed a three-year contract with Scheller Finance. Neither party could break this contract during that period. It was unclear what Lord Six would do to her then.
Marian White leaned back gently against the car. Since it had already happened, there was no point in avoiding it. After all, the worst that Lord Six could do was remove her from her position as supervisor. Seeing Mona Mini’s smug expression, it seemed she had guessed correctly.
The car drove quickly. When they arrived at Xeler Finance, Mona Mini suddenly felt more confident. She quickly adjusted her makeup to ensure everything was perfect before getting out of the car. Marian White couldn’t help but smirk at her. Women who relied on their appearance to get ahead were generally of little use.
Marianne White looked at Mona Mini. Mona Mini was the kind of woman with a strikingly attractive appearance. Since she also devoted a lot of effort to her grooming, she seemed even more captivating overall. In contrast, Marianne White had the beauty of an iceberg—a beauty that could only be admired from afar, never truly touched. Lord Six certainly had feelings for her, but he didn’t know how to approach her.
Fortunately, Mona Mini made up for this flaw. Not only did she eagerly offer herself to him, but she also obeyed Lord Six’s every command. This made Lord Six determined to promote her. When Mona Mini arrived at Xerox Finance, she was determined to put Marian White in her place. Acting as if she were the mistress of Xerox Finance, she arrogantly told the servants, “Go tell Lord Six that we’ve arrived.”
Actually, these servants also had their own opinions about women like Mona Minnie. But there was nothing they could do since the Sixth Master liked her, so they had to treat her with respect. Soon after, they led her to the Sixth Master’s room. However, the Sixth Master ordered that only Marian White be allowed to enter. Mona Minnie had no choice but to obey.
Marian White stared at Mona Mini coldly, as if she were looking at a clown who thought she was funny by acting out scenes in front of her. Mona Mini wasn’t aware of how ridiculous her behavior was. She simply tilted her head back and continued to stare at Marian White.
Marian White walked in calmly. As soon as she closed the door, she could sense the hostile aura emanating from Lord Six. Marian White chose to remain silent, standing calmly in front of Lord Six. Lord Six smoked his cigar, staring coldly at Marian White while exhaling rings of smoke from time to time.
Marian White used to really enjoy smoking. Combined with her excellent abilities, she managed the bar very well. So, whenever I went there, Lord Six usually didn’t smoke. It seems like Lord Six is truly angry this time.
Marian White respectfully poured a glass of water for Lord Six. Thinking that staying silent indefinitely wasn’t appropriate, she hesitated for a moment before speaking up: “I wonder what Lord Six wants from me?”
Lord Six let out a cold snort and didn’t even take the teacup. Instead, he closed his eyes and said, “I thought I’d treated you fairly. Is this how you repay me?” Marian White knew why he was angry, but still didn’t say what Lord Six wanted to hear.
Lord Six simply wanted to bring Burke Woolley under his control. In the past, Marian White would never have agreed to such a thing. And after seeing how Burke Woolley behaved last night, Marian White was even more determined not to hand him over.
Lord Six waited for a while, but Marian White said nothing. Lord Six knew that this woman was determined to oppose him. He smashed the teacup Marian White was holding. The teacup shattered right beside her, and shards of glass cut her neck, leaving a trail of blood. Yet Marian White remained standing there, motionless.
Lord Six, seeing her arrogant attitude, laughed bitterly and said, “You really refuse to hand that person over, don’t you? Very well. I’ll tell you something: with your strength, you have no way of protecting him. You’ve been in this area for a few years now, so you surely understand the principle of the weak being preyed upon by the strong.”
Marian White nodded and said “Yes”. Lord Six stroked his hair and laughed. “What kind of ability or qualification do you think you have to protect that kid? Do you even have any idea what I went through last night? Let me tell you, that kid got his foot stuck in an iron plate. He’s definitely going to die this time. If you really want to protect him, go ahead and try.”
Marian White naturally knew that Lord Six wasn’t trying to scare her. She replied in a calm and respectful manner, “Thank you for the reminder, Lord Six. Whether one can survive depends on their own abilities.”
When Lord Six saw that things had progressed this far, he realized that Marian White was absolutely determined to oppose him.
