Chapter 6 A Terrifying Encounter in the Living Room
The evening sunlight filtered through the leaves, leaving scattered patches of light across the ground.
The faint aroma of black tea mingled with the buttery fragrance of the beautifully shaped, delicious cookies, drifting gently with the breeze that brushed against Elena’s cheek.
She opened her eyes, looking at the delightful afternoon tea laid out before her.
The past week had been both relaxing and unsettling for her.
Relaxing, because life here was truly wonderful. No one would ever bother her. The Campbell family felt like a nightmare that had been thrown into another lifetime.
Unsettling, because until today, she still had not seen her husband even once.
Could it be that he had completely forgotten about her?
Elena did not know.
Just then, a servant walked over, smiling at her, and said softly, “Ma’am, the chef has finished preparing the spicy lobster dish you wanted. Would you like to try some?”
At those words, Elena’s eyes immediately lit up slightly.
She did not have to worry about the food here. On the contrary, the chef could always create the most wonderful flavors using the healthiest and freshest ingredients.
But delicious was still delicious. Eating so many light and healthy meals over time inevitably made Elena feel a little bored.
So today, she wanted something spicy.
The moment the chef heard her request, he immediately rushed into the kitchen, repeatedly saying that he also wanted to challenge himself.
Elena stood up right away. “Let’s go.”
She did not go directly to the dining room. Instead, she returned to her room to take a bath and change clothes, preparing to have dinner afterward.
The servants here treated her with utmost respect, and the thoughtful arrangements made by the butler ensured that everything was taken care of. Elena now even had her own private dressing room. It could be said that she lacked nothing.
She leisurely took a bath, completely unaware that the moment she returned to her room, the butler had already sent a notice to all the servants in the house.
Today, their master, Christian Forbes, would be returning.
Almost immediately, everyone became noticeably more serious.
It was not that they were usually careless with their work. It was just that anyone who had ever met Christian in person would inevitably be intimidated by his presence, feeling both fearful and uneasy.
After all, it was nearly impossible for them to chat and laugh with Christian the way they did with Elena.
Ever since Elena, as the lady of the house, arrived here, it felt as though she had brought a breath of fresh air into the mansion. For the first time, the servants felt that this place was not as lonely and oppressive as it used to be.
After drying her hair, Elena let it fall naturally over her shoulders. She put on a pale yellow silk dress, then draped a knitted cardigan over it. She brushed her hair slightly forward before leaving her room.
Her hand rested on the railing. Just as she was about to walk downstairs, she noticed something was wrong.
At that moment, the servants were already standing on both sides of the entrance—the same familiar scene, exactly like the day Elena had first arrived here.
At the same time, a tall figure walked in.
He was dressed in a perfectly tailored three-piece suit. The long coat reaching down to his calves did not make him appear any shorter; instead, it accentuated his tall and powerful frame. Even the outer layers of clothing could not hide the explosive strength of the muscles beneath.
He wore a pair of sunglasses. Facing the respectful greetings from the butler and servants, he showed no expression, only slowly walking inside.
As if sensing something, he suddenly lifted his head slightly.
In that instant, Elena knew that their eyes had definitely met.
She could not help but tremble slightly, countless thoughts rushing through her mind.
This was her husband?
Not some bald old man with a beer belly?
Not some wealthy cripple?
But this man, with an overwhelming aura and a flawless figure?
Before Elena could even process her thoughts, Christian suddenly raised his hand and took off his sunglasses.
“Bang!”
Elena felt as though a bolt of lightning had struck right beside her ears.
She parted her lips, staring at the man’s face in shock and panic. His sharp, well-defined features carried an unmistakable regal aura, a face so breathtakingly beautiful that seeing it just once was enough to etch it into one’s memory...
Almost the moment she faced Christian, the memories of that night uncontrollably resurfaced in Elena’s mind.
The way he had pressed down on her, taken possession of her, and forced her to cry and beg for mercy with his overwhelming strength...
Elena only felt her legs grow weak. If she had not been holding onto the railing, she might not have been able to stand.
Her husband—her husband in name only...
The man she thought she would only ever meet again in her memories was actually him!
How could this be...
At that moment, a sharp and piercing voice suddenly rang out, snapping Elena back to reality and cutting off the silent confrontation between her and Christian.
“Elena, you shameless woman! Why are you here?! Did you follow me all the way to my home? Do you have no dignity at all?!”
Elena jolted in surprise. She looked over and saw that the person standing behind Christian was none other than Ashton.
Clearly, Ashton was an outstanding man as well, but standing beside Christian, he became so insignificant that he was almost impossible to notice.
Just moments ago, he had been acting humble and respectful. But the moment he saw Elena, he lost control and shouted at her, convinced that Elena was so obsessed with him that she had gone crazy.
However, before he could say anything more, a gaze as sharp as a blade swept toward him.
Ashton suspiciously raised his head, only to immediately meet Christian’s deep black eyes, dark as obsidian.
It was as though a king’s mood had suddenly been ruined. Christian’s gaze, which was already cold, became even more emotionless.
Although Ashton had always called Christian “father,” he knew very well that no one had ever truly earned Christian’s regard.
Ashton was only fortunate enough to have a trace of blood relation and a nominal connection with him, which allowed Christian to support him more than others.
Ashton would never dare to provoke Christian’s anger, not even slightly.
Therefore, he almost immediately fell silent, even shrinking his neck slightly.
Elena knew exactly how arrogant and confident Ashton was. His identity allowed him to be arrogant and self-assured.
But now, Christian only needed a single glance to turn Ashton into a frightened little chick, obediently keeping his mouth shut.
This man...
What kind of identity did he actually have?
