Chapter 4 Stay at My Place Tonight
Matilda opened her eyes and saw Wentworth's handsome, serious face in front of her.
"I'm so sorry, I actually fell asleep." She felt a bit nervous.
Wentworth smiled faintly. "It's okay, you're probably tired from work during the day."
Matilda fell silent.
Was he showing concern for her?
"Come eat. I didn't want to wake you, but the food has already been reheated twice. If I heat it again, it won't taste good anymore."
Matilda raised her hand to check her watch—it was already 9 PM!
She had slept for two hours!
Her position had changed from sitting to lying down, and there was a thin blanket covering her.
She quickly got up and wiped the drool from the corner of her mouth.
Just as she was about to go eat with him, her phone rang.
It was a voice call from her neighbor David.
"Matty, where are you right now? I just went downstairs to take out the trash and saw that guy—you know, the one who bullied you before. And it's not just him, he brought two friends with him. They look really aggressive, like they're looking for trouble. Maybe you shouldn't come home tonight."
"I'm at... a friend's place. Okay, thanks David. I won't come back tonight then."
After hanging up, Matilda looked at Wentworth helplessly.
The room was quiet, and Wentworth had heard everything.
He asked angrily, "Does this person bully you often?"
"Not really, I only run into him a few times a year. But every time he tries to bully me, I find a way to escape, and the neighbors help me too." Matilda said proudly.
But Wentworth was angry. "A few times a year isn't a lot? How long are you going to put up with this?"
Matilda paused, then said with a wronged tone, "He's a thug who collects protection money at nightclubs. I don't dare really offend him. I'm afraid... afraid of retaliation. He has a bunch of thug friends."
She didn't dare imagine what those people were capable of.
"What's your exact home address?" Wentworth asked.
Matilda simply took out her driver's license from her bag and handed it to him. "It's on here."
Wentworth took it, snapped a photo, then went to the balcony to make a phone call.
When he came back, he told Matilda, "The problem's been solved."
"Solved?" Matilda asked in surprise. "How did you solve it?"
Wentworth opened his mouth, about to say he'd used their own methods against them—just needed to contact the right people, and naturally someone would deal with that Derek.
However, seeing Matilda's big, watery eyes, he suddenly changed his answer. "I just contacted a friend who temporarily convinced those guys to leave. But I don't know if they'll come back in the middle of the night. To be safe, you should move in here as soon as possible... really."
Matilda hesitated for a moment, then agreed.
Although she had always disliked Derek, she had never had a direct confrontation with him before. Today Wentworth had hit him, so he definitely wouldn't let it go. For safety's sake, it was better to stay at Wentworth's place.
...
After dinner, Wentworth went to the supermarket downstairs and bought Matilda a big bag of daily necessities—cups, toothbrushes, slippers, and so on.
When Matilda opened it, she found there were even underwear, panties, and camisole pajamas inside.
"I didn't know what colors you liked, so I just bought some randomly." Wentworth said.
Matilda looked at the all-pink underwear and panties and smiled awkwardly. "It's fine, I'm just wearing them at home anyway."
"It's getting late, you should rest early." Wentworth's face showed concern.
"So... which room am I sleeping in tonight?" Matilda asked again.
Wentworth thought for a moment. "Doesn't matter, whatever you prefer."
Preferably the same room as him.
Matilda bit her lip.
God knows how sexy that gesture looked to a man.
Wentworth swallowed.
"Maybe I should sleep in the guest room. You're injured, and we're not officially married yet. After we get married, then we can... live together?" Matilda asked.
Wentworth nodded, looking like he was answering a question during military training. "That's what I was thinking too. Before we're officially married, I promise not to hurt you. I mean what I say!"
Matilda suddenly found him a bit cute.
She asked curiously, "You're in the military, right? Will our marriage be complicated?"
"Not complicated." Wentworth answered. "I just need to submit a marriage application form and background check materials. Once the military district personnel department approves it, we're good."
"So it's just a background check, right? My parents are divorced. Will that affect anything?"
"No, it won't." Wentworth shook his head. "The background check mainly looks for serious criminal records. Divorce has nothing to do with that."
"Well, they don't have criminal records, it's just... never mind, my life doesn't have much to do with them anymore."
Wentworth looked at Matilda, seeming to want to say something, but Matilda had already picked up the bags of daily necessities and returned to the guest room.
...
Early the next morning, Matilda woke up and looked at the European-style ceiling light above her head and the tasteful decoration in the room. She felt dazed for a moment.
Overnight, her life had changed!
She changed clothes and came out to see that Wentworth was already up, with breakfast he'd bought from outside on the dining table.
"Good morning." Wentworth greeted her seriously.
When they first met yesterday, she would have been nervous seeing him with that expression, but now Matilda found his serious manner cute.
"Mr. Gonzaga, you're up so early?" Matilda asked.
"Couldn't sleep, so I got up. You still have to go to work in a bit, so eat something first. I didn't know what you liked, so I bought a bit of everything."
Matilda felt warmth in her heart.
Although when she was dating Reuben before, he would also buy her breakfast every day, after Reuben delivered breakfast, he would expect her praise, and she had to praise him.
Wentworth wasn't like that. He seemed to really just want to make sure she had a full stomach.
Matilda sat down. "Mr. Gonzaga, I..."
"Just call me Wentworth." Wentworth said.
"Wentworth, okay, then don't call me Dr. Spencer either. Call me Matty." After being interrupted, Matilda forgot what she wanted to say.
After eating a sandwich, she remembered and quickly said, "Wentworth, are you going to the hospital today to change your dressing? If you don't want the hassle, you can change it at home. I'll go downstairs and buy some medicine for external injuries."
Wentworth quickly said, "No need, I'm going to another hospital in a bit. I have an appointment with a male doctor."
"Oh, a male doctor. That is more convenient." Matilda took another sip of milk.
Seeing that Matilda didn't say anything more, Wentworth wondered if he had hurt her feelings, so he explained, "It's not that I don't trust your medical skills, it's just that the doctor is my friend, and he insists on checking me out. We agreed on it yesterday."
Matilda saw that he was actually explaining, which showed he cared about her feelings. She quickly said, "It's fine, I'm not bothered by that. Since you have a friend, you should go see him. It saves you from having to register and wait in line, right?"
Wentworth smiled, then picked up a napkin, but instead of using it himself, he reached out and held it to Matilda's lips.
