Chapter 3 Enemy Savior

“Are you sure she is the one?” An old voice whispered in an attempt not to wake Mia.

Russell nodded. “Yes, Uncle Alfred! I am sure! I could never forget those blue eyes.” He took a deep breath, letting it out slowly in regret.

“I am certain of it. She is the same girl. I killed her parents fifteen years ago.”

Alfred shook his wrinkled head in dismay, and even his heavy sigh couldn’t let go of his worries.

“What are your plans, goddess?” He muttered, limping into the room where Mia lay unconscious with the aid of his staff.

Mia’s wounds had been treated, a bandage wrapped around her head, and plasters on her face.

Alfred watched her breathe faintly, and for the umpteenth time, he shook his head.

The two doctors left with their belongings, daring not to talk about what they had seen.

Russell walked into the room as well, and seeing the necklace once more, his heart began to beat faster.

“What do I do, Uncle Alfred? I feel so guilty.” He turned to the old werewolf for answers, but Alfred didn’t look like he had any.

Russell tried to get a grip on himself. “Maybe I shouldn’t have brought her to this castle.”

Alfred scoffed at him. “That’s nonsense, Nephew. You are the Lycan King, you are meant to protect everyone in the northern territory.”

“But I killed her parents, Uncle. What if she finds out?!”

“She won’t,” Alfred assured. “Or do you have any intention of telling her?” He asked, but before Russell could answer, Mia coughed.

They both turned to see her flickering her eyelids.

Mia groaned painfully. “You killed my parents?” She managed to keep her eyes open, turning to Russell.

Tears trickled down her face while she struggled to get up, pushing with her hands fastened on the bed.

Russell had no words to say. The guilt was so overwhelming that he just stared with wide eyes.

Alfred looked away, still balancing his weight on his staff.

Mia was already up on her feet. “You are the reason why I have suffered all through my life!” She pointed accusing fingers at the Lycan King, unmoved by his six-foot brawny stature and his fearsome crimson orbs.

“Why?! Why did you make me an orphan!  What did my parents do to you?!” Mia poured out all her pain, but Russell had no answers to give.

She never knew who her real parents were, but she had hoped to find them someday.

Learning that they had been killed by the same person who saved her was heartrending.

Maybe he should have just killed her rather than to cause her such misery.

She staggered, but that didn’t matter as long as she was getting away from the monster.

“Don’t come close to me!” She yelled the moment Russell made a move, and he had to remain still.

Russell sighed. “Your body is still weak.”

“I don’t care! I want to leave!” Mia fired, sighting the door behind the Lycan King.

She didn’t want to get close to him, but that seemed like the only way she could leave the room.

The luxurious curtains, the marble tiles, the high-end furniture, and the golden wares caught her attention. She could tell that she was not in an ordinary place.

“Where am I?” She turned to Alfred, avoiding Russell like the plague.

“You are in Black-Claw Castle. The Lycan Castle.” Alfred seized the opportunity to pacify her.

“Your body is still weak. You need to heal before you leave.”

“No!” Mia blatantly refused, still longing to reach the door.

“Out of the way!” She screamed at Russell, panting with a throbbing heartbeat.

He finally left the way, and the only thing he could think of was how much pain he must have caused her, and how deep her hatred for him could be.

“I am sorry.  I didn’t mean to cause you so much pain.” He finally found his words, but they didn’t mean anything to Mia.

She just wanted to leave, and as soon as she got to the door, she ran out of the room barefoot, speeding along the hallway while the bright lights illumined her path.

Her wounds hurt so badly, but she just wanted to get out away from her greatest enemy.

But she was too weak, and the moment she got to the stairs, she collapsed and fell.

All her attempts to get up were futile. She could only move her fingers, groaning while she tried to keep her eyes open.

“No!” She whispered loudly when she saw Russell running toward her.

“Don’t touch me!” Her voice was weak, and it was not enough to deter him from lifting her.

“I will never forgive you!” She struggled with her last words before she blacked out in his arms.

Russell carried her back to the bed and lay her down.

The Lycan King was sorry, scratching his curly golden hair with both hands.

“I was only following instructions.”

For the first time in ages, he had a reason to be edgy, wiping the beads of sweat all over his face.

Alfred drew closer, and they both stared at her silently, watching as her chest moved up and down.

“You have to make things right, Russell.”

Russell was eager. “How do I do that, Uncle Alfred? How do I get her to forgive me? I killed her parents? Is that forgivable?”

Alfred sighed, attempting to shake off the feeling of uncertainty that gripped him.

“She is your responsibility, Russell. You are not going to run away from this one…”

He patted his shoulder before he walked away, taking one last glance at Mia.

Russell wasn’t prepared to be left alone with her. “What if she wakes up and attacks me?” He thought, but that was not because he was weak, but because the guilt had rendered him powerless.

Alfred’s words resounded deep inside his head, and taking out his phone from his jacket pocket, he made a call.

“Cancel all my appointments for the next two days.”

“But Alpha Russell…” A female voice was about to question from the other end.

“Just do it. No questions.” Russell interrupted, ending the call without letting her speak again.

He looked at Mia, unsure of what fate had planned out for the both of them.
