Chapter 7 7
I held my breath and closed my eyes, waiting for the worst parts to come, but it never did.
A slicing sound pierced through the air, and then there was a stillness in the air.
I opened my eyes to see all the men on the floor. None of them moved.
A cold shiver ran down my spine when I saw the slash marks on their necks.
I turned around to see who had done it and froze in my spot when my eyes locked on King Alaric.
He had killed them. I looked back at the men who had been only seconds away from ruining me, not knowing how to feel.
I knew they weren’t good people, but I hadn’t been expecting them to just be killed... Like that.
It was so gruesome I felt like throwing up.
I stood there looking at them for a really long time before I felt a hand wrap around my arm.
I almost jumped out of my skin, but then I saw it was King Alaric; my heartbeat slowed. I should have been a lot more scared of him than I was, but there was just something about him that put me at ease.
Which was crazy, because I literally just experienced him kill like five of his own men without even batting an eye.
"Come. Let's get you back inside," he grunted.
I pushed the thoughts out of my head as he led me back to my tent. I was shaking all over and could barely tell what was going on around me, so I just followed him, too unsteady to walk on my own feet.
Honestly I wasn’t sure what part of the night scared me more. Whether it was being overpowered by those men, or watching the ‘warlord’ kill his own men in seconds.
I knew he was powerful, I'd heard his tales just like everyone else.
I had never imagined I'll witness it in real time. It was fucking terrifying. One moment they were alive and doing stupid stuff, the next, they stopped existing.
Gone, just like that.
A voice in the back of my head tried to convince me that he had done that for me, but I refused to believe it.
He led me to a chair in the corner of the tent to sit down and turned to leave.
I was just about to let out a breath of relief when I heard him speak from the entrance.
“Don’t just wander off on your own at night.” He said. There was a hint of annoyance in his tone. I expected him to leave, but he stood there a second longer.
“We’re leaving tomorrow.” He said again, before walking out of the tent.
Every muscle in my body loosened, releasing all the tension that had built up through the day.
It had been an eventful day, to say the least. It was crazy how I went from being heartbroken and rejecting my mate to having a king for a mate, all in the same day.
If it wasn’t my life, I wouldn’t have believed it either. Everything was honestly so overwhelming.
With a sigh, I walked to the bed in the corner and curled into a ball. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was out like a light.
The next morning I woke up to the sounds of maids moving things all over the place.
I sat up groggily, blinking away any leftover sleep from my eyes.
I was confused for a minute, looking around the unfamiliar room and wondering where I was, but then I remembered everything that happened yesterday.
I released a sigh and stood up on shaky legs. I eyed the maids as they moved from one corner of the room to another packing everything up.
I remembered King Alaric said something about moving last night.
I didn’t want to move anywhere, but of course, I didn’t have much of a choice. Protesting was a stupid idea but seriously, I would really prefer being treated like I was someone with a brain and not furniture.
"Hello?" I waved to one of the maids, "where are we going to?"
She didn't even react like there was someone speaking.
"Seriously?" I grumbled, but I might have as well be talking to a wall. They didn’t even bother to give me a second glance.
Was that like a default setting or something? I get that it’s a war camp, but did every single one of them have to be so impossible?!
I stood there for a minute before two of the maids each grabbed one of my arms and started shoving me into uncomfortable clothes.
"Hey!" I snapped, "what are you trying to do??" I tried to protest, but just like before, they didn’t spare me a glance.
I thought it would end with the clothes. I was wrong.
Someone came up from behind and attempted to rip my hair out of their roots in the name of packing it into an elegant bun.
"For crying out loud, it hurts!"
Nothing changed, I had to sit still or she'd actually rip my skull open.
Another one brought a black stick to my eye and proceeded to try to gouge my eyes out.
Okay, that's dramatic a tad bit. She was trying to put some mascara on me but to what end?
Am I going for a party from here?
Still, I shut my eyes as tight as I could.
They didn’t stop their assault; I had to suffer it for what felt like hours before they were finally done.
My head ached and I knew it would be a very long day.
What sort of journey even required this much preparation? The more I thought of it, the angrier I became.
Maybe it was the lack of sleep that was getting to me, but I was a lot more irritable than normal.
Where were we going? The question was at the very tip of my tongue when I saw King Alaric, but I held myself back. Chances were, they weren’t even going to answer me anyway.
Somehow, my mind drifted back to Damien. The thought of him now left a sour taste in my mouth.
Why was I even thinking of him right now? I knew the answer to that.
Once, I had dreamed that when we were mated, he would take some time off work and we could go for a nice long trip.
I still remembered the expression on his face when I had suggested it.
That look should have told me everything I had needed to know, but I was too desperate to pay attention.
It wasn’t until we boarded a carriage that I was finally told where we were going. I wasn’t really told; I actually just overheard the announcer, but it was still better than nothing.
The Infamous Werewolf Capital.
