Chapter 12 Chapter 12

Kael’s pov

I sat in my study, the lights dim with the scent of sweat and whiskey lingering in the air.

I looked at the empty bottle on the table before me then looked at the half filled glass in my hands before sighing and rubbing my head.

I was drowning my frustration in drinks.

Training that afternoon had done little to nothing for me and downing my thoughts in whiskey felt like my only option.

My wolf tormented me day in and day out. I couldn’t sit, I couldn’t think, I couldn’t even talk to anyone without Black being the problem in my life.

A knock came on the door as I looked up and sighed.

“I thought I said no one should disturb me.”

The door opened as I scoffed. Only one person had the audacity to disturb me at a moment like this.

My beta, Dorian.

He stood there in his armor as he walked up to me and sighed.

“Drinking are we?”

I looked away from him. “Tell me you have news of that wench.”

He nodded slowly, settling into the chair across from me. “She’s in the dungeon. I removed some of the guards there just so you can… do whatever it is you want to do with her.”

I nodded. “Very well.”

I took a swig of my drink, feeling it numb my senses before dropping the glass onto the table.

The little burn that had been in my throat the first time I had taken the drink was no more.

All that was there was an incessant irritation that I wanted to get rid of.

“If I may ask,” he started. “Why?”

I looked at him. “Why what?”

He shrugged. “Why do it? She saved your life. Our pack is built on thanking those who saved us. No matter how small. Yet she gets the knife. What crime has she committed that is so great she deserves the knife instead of our thanks.”

“I don’t have time for this,” I muttered to my feet as he did the same and stood in my way.

“Yes you do,” he said stubbornly. “Alpha, tell me what she has done and I swear I’ll torture her until she bleeds green. If you want me to extend the torture to her friends or family or allies she has I will do it. But I need to know why I spent half the day looking for that girl only for you to want to kill her?

I stared at him for a while. I couldn’t tell him. He would not understand.

He was not supposed to know anything about me and being mates.

He would question my marriage with Selene, my thought process to lead and if my sanity was still in check.

With a confident smile on my face I looked into his eyes.

“She touched me. That’s why I want her dead.”

His eyes said it all. “Is… is that all? That she touched you?”

“She is an omega. You know the rules.”

“Yes I do but it wasn’t her fault. If anyone was to be put to the knife it should be the elders. They are the ones who forced her to touch you and heal you. I was there.”

“It doesn’t matter. Rules are rules!”

I sighed then walked past him.

“I’ll be going to the bathroom. Make sure every single guard is gone from the dungeon. I want the entire space to myself.”

He hesitated but then bowed before walking out as I took in deep breaths.

I didn’t want anyone around when I would question the omega.

I looked into the mirror to see my wolf staring at me with a disappointing look.

“What?” I muttered as it dissipated into black smoke.

The reflection was that of a haggard alpha whose clothing needed help.

I heaved a sigh before going out to see an elder coming to me.

My wish to disappear from the hallway because a pressing need as the elder got to me.

“We sent invitations to a few dignitaries around the packs but some said the rush of the marriage was to be questioned.”

I frowned. “I am an alpha. I can change the rules.”

“While that is true, marriage rites such as these are very… fragile.”

“Fragile?”

“Yes alpha. You see, if the mate you get involved with is not your actual mate, your wolf would be restless and so would the pack. Plus, with what happened to your former mate, they all question if this one will not meet the same fate as the former.”

I growled at him. “Stop sending invitations then if it’s only insults I’m going to get.”

I walked past him just to see my beta climbing up the stairs.

“Are they gone from there?” I asked as he sighed.

“Alpha, I can’t just take every single guard from there. We need at least one or two for…”

“Remove them all!”

“Alpha…” the elder came to me as I sighed.

“You two should do what I’ve said and stop tormenting me.”

They both bowed, exchanged looks before walking away as I walked to the toilet to pee and arrange my looks.

I stared into the mirror, thinking of what I was going to do to her.

The only way to break whatever hex she had done to me was to kill her. With her dead, the witch and her hex would be dead with her. I would be free and so would my wolf.

From what I could see, it was clear he was just as useless in this case as I was.

A knock came on my door as I opened it to see my beta standing there.

“The guards have all been removed.”

I nodded and walked away from him, going down the stairs and out of the packhouse.

I walked briskly to the forest path to see the dungeon in the distance. No guards were there. Good. It was just me and her.

I opened the main gate and entered, closing it behind me as I walked past so many cells before noticing that they were all empty.

I walked back to the first cell to see nothing.

I opened the main gate and got out to see my beta standing there.

“Where is she?” I asked through gritted teeth as he rushed past me and soon got back out.

“She’s gone. She’s not here. This was why I wanted the guards posted. It seems like someone busted her out.”

I was about to yell at him as a sharp pain filled my chest, causing me to fall to the ground.

‘Our mate is in trouble. You have to save her,’ my wolf growled, and this time, it wasn’t asking.
