Chapter 8 Chapter 8
Eliara’s pov
I watched Lyra pace around as my heart raced with fear.
“I can’t believe this is how he treats people who actually sacrifice themselves for him. He is supposed to be an alpha. He is to be a leader not a douche.”
I waved to her so that she would acknowledge me, but she shook her head.
“Not now, Eliara. We have to get to the bottom of this. You sacrificed your life to make sure that the alpha is still alive, and he tosses you out like nothing.”
“He didn’t toss me out. I left on my own.”
She scoffed. “It doesn’t matter. Tossed you out, left on your own. You’re in hiding. You’re running away from the pack. That’s already a lot. You should not be trying to run. You should be trying to stay. Build the pack. That’s what you should be trying to do.”
“I already tried that, and it didn’t work. The best thing I can do is leave. Maybe get out of the pack for a while. Go out there, clear my head. And that will really help me.”
“And you think going is the best. You can stay out of their line of sight and maybe even get a respectable mate to be with.”
I gave a small smile. If only she knew who my mate was, she would not be talking like that.
I knew, my wolf knew, he knew, but that would not change anything. He had who he wanted to be with. I was not that person. Was I pained, yes. He had rejected me and tossed me aside like I was trash after having his way with me.
She sat down before me, tapping her legs constantly like she had some sort of disorder.
“Eliara, are you sure this is what you want to do? You want to leave the pack, abandon your whole life? Just because of what a few elders said?”
“It’s not just the elders. Everyone. It’s like they are out to get me.”
“It’s the same way it is for me,” she blurted.
“Not like me. You weren’t forced to extract poison and you weren’t threatened when the alphas life was in danger. I have to go.”
“By the moon, this isn’t how life is supposed to be.”
I shrugged, then gave her a pitiable smile, one that would win most hearts, but unfortunately, it couldn’t win the alpha’s heart.
“Listen, Lyra, I’ve given my entire life to this pack. I tried my best to help in ways I could. Sure, I could have left the alpha to die. I was thinking about it, but I’m an omega. Even if I am not treated with respect, the news here is that I still have a devotion to make sure my Alpha is alive. Plus, I was threatened. If anything happened to the Alpha, they would kill me, and they would bury me in the same day the alpha would be buried, but nobody would come for my burial. But you know, I’m just trying to say that it’s hard being an Omega, and I’m one that is not respected. So maybe the best thing is for me to go out there, find what awaits me, instead of staying in this pack and being used over and over again.
“I was lucky to have survived the ritual. Imagine if I didn’t survive. I’d be dead, or worse, I’d be alive with the poison inside me, and nobody would heal me because they would want me to suffer for not healing their Alpha.”
She nodded.
“But if you leave this pack, you’ll be a rogue. You’ll be chased. Many people will want your head. They will want to kill you.”
I shrugged. “It’s far better than staying here and being seen as nothing.”
“Eliara…”
“What’s the guarantee that my life is safe in this pack? With a healing power like mine, I could be seen as a threat and killed.”
She gave me a short nod.
“If that’s what you want, then I’m not going to stop you. But my connection will get back to me this evening with news. If he doesn’t, tomorrow or next tomorrow. But for now, stay on the outskirts of the pack. This hut should be enough. There’s enough food here.”
I looked around.
“Where is this place, by the way?”
She smiled.
“It’s a place I built with my dad ten years ago, we have our farms close to this area. Well, not much guards patrol this area, so nobody will notice that you are here.”
“That’s good news. Thank you so much, Lyra. You are a true friend.”
“Hey, we are best friends. If whatever happens to you happens to me, I don't know what I’d do. But you’re handling it pretty well.”
We hugged as she kissed my cheek and stepped away.
“I have to get back to the packhouse before anybody notices that I’m missing.”
“All right, thank you.”
She nodded and walked away as I sat there staring into space.
I thought back on what had transpired between me and the Alpha, how he had had his way with me. But in the sense of him and me having sex, I felt a piece of me go with him, and I felt him give me a piece of himself. I felt like my wolf and his wolf, for one second, clicked. I was whole. I was no longer empty until he had seen himself as an Alpha and me as an Omega.
Apart from that, he was my perfect match. We were mates, but he would never have anything to do with an Omega, and I was not destined to be with an Alpha.
The best thing I could do was let him go.
I leaned back in bed, crossing my legs as I stared out of the small window. I could see the clouds gathering in the distance.
Well, whatever was happening in the packhouse now, I wouldn’t know. And I hoped that Lyra’s connection comes through, and I will get out of this pack forever without turning back.
