Chapter 6 Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Anna’s POV

Opening my eyes, I half expected the wolf to still be next to me, but I was alone. The fire was still burning, so I knew I wasn’t dreaming. Opening the front door, the wolves on the porch were gone. I frowned.

Maybe it was just a dream.

Getting into the shower, I quickly showered. Micah is supposed to come later today with a car. I need to tell him what happened last night. After I am done with my shower, I look at myself in the mirror, and I see bruises around my neck where that man choked me. Brushing my hair, I decided to leave it down; I didn’t want Micah to see it.

“So not a dream,” I said, touching my neck, which was sore.

Two hours later, Micah and another vehicle came into my driveway. He smiled when he saw me. “Hey!” he said, handing me the keys. “She’s old too, but she at least runs; you can use it until you can get another car, trade this in,” he mused. “You remember Beta James?” he asked when he walked up.

“Beta,” I said, looking down. “I need to talk to you,” I said, looking back at Micah. I don't know how he is going to react to this. I still don't understand what happened and why that guy came here looking to hurt me. I didn't sleep much last night because of it, even though he didn't come back, I still think he might.

“Sure, what’s up?” he asked curiously. He glanced at Beta James.

“There was a man here last night, he said he wanted information on you, and I didn’t say anything because, well, I don’t know anything anyway. But he smelled horrible, and I thought he was a homeless person, but I don’t know.” I said I was trying to stay calm, but my heart is racing, and I don't know why. I don't know if Micah will get mad at me because I didn't run over there after it happened. I was scared and exhausted.

“Did he threaten you?” he asked.

“He did, but I am not worried.” I sighed. I mean, I am worried, but not as worried about Micah getting hurt. He seemed like he was going to do something bad, and I wanted to give him a heads-up in case he wasn't expecting it. “Three wolves scared him away, and they stayed the night. I think.” I said, rubbing my neck.

“Let me see,” he said, taking a step towards me. “Where did he hurt you?” I can tell he is a little upset. I don't know why he would care. He moved my hair away from my neck and then glanced at his friend.

“I’m fine,” I said, removing my hand. “I am worried he is going to hurt you or your friends.” I sighed.

“So, you’re not worried about yourself?” Beta James asked.  I can tell he doesn't like me very much, and I don't know why. Maybe it was because I didn't say I needed to talk to him when they arrived.

“What do you mean?” I said, looking at him. “Of course, I don’t want to get hurt in all of this either, but he made it clear he was going to hurt me or have some fun trying to hurt me last night, but the wolves scared him away.”

Micah smirked. “I told you, Beta, you need to come with us.” He said, looking back at me. “Just for the night, so we can catch this homeless guy. Please.”

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “This is my home; I am not going to let someone take this away from me,” I said with tears forming in my eyes. “I lost enough because I got scared, I am not going to sit and let this guy take it away from me.”

“Just for the night, we can do a movie or something.” He said, kind of concerned.

“Rain check?” I said, looking at both of them, James’ facial expression didn’t change, but his eyes flicked a little bit. “I mean, maybe another time.”

“You want me to stay here with you?” Micah asked.

“No.” I smiled. “I won’t go outside this time, that way he cannot get into my house unless he breaks it down.”

“But he would.” Beta James said before Micah could. “I’ll have a couple of patrols come through here throughout the night, but you cannot come outside; these wolves are aggressive, and I would hate for something to happen.”

“I will stay inside, I promise.” I smiled. “You guys are amazing. I don’t know what I would do if you didn’t come and check on me, or the wolves didn’t want to stay with me last night.”

He didn't say anything. I can tell he is upset about my not wanting to come with them to their place. I didn't know them, and I didn't want to cause any more issues for them, especially if this guy is serious about wanting to hurt someone. I hope he doesn't come back. I don't know if I will get help this time. I said I would stay inside, so I am keeping my word. I hope nothing happens to my power; maybe I should keep the fire going just in case.

After they left, I felt a need to go with them, but I fought it. I meant it when I said I wasn’t going to let another man take something from me. This is what was left by my parents, and he isn’t going to take it from me.

I don't know why they are being so nice to me, but it's nice to have someone out here. Most nights, Jake was there with me, and I didn't know he was cheating on me until I came home from work with a headache and he was doing things with my sister. At first, I let it go, but as I sat there and thought about what they were doing, I forced him to leave for a few days. I don't know why I trusted him, but I did, and now I am here alone, thinking about how stupid I was to believe he would ever change.

When my parents died and left me with some money, Jake didn't go crazy spending it; he made sure I saved most of it. He was a good guy, but I just don't understand what I did wrong to get him to go with my sister. Maybe she did things better than I did, but he didn't bother to talk to me about this and help me understand what I was doing wrong.

Am I a bad person for not realizing I was a complete mess and he was taking advantage of me? I hated my sister more than anything right now, but I wanted to find out why she had to go for the guy I was planning to marry.

I know I haven't heard the last from Jake. I know he is going to do everything in his power to try to control me now that he doesn't have control. I know my sister is most likely going to help him do it, too.

I have to be ready, even if it's not for him, it's for myself.
