Chapter 1
I suddenly awakened the ability to read minds.
But what I didn't expect was to read the mind of my fiancé — Joey Jones — who planned to ambush a gunman in our wedding church to kill me.
On the day of the wedding, I worked with my first love, a police officer named Nate, to send him to jail.
On Christmas night, Joey finally came home. He stood at the door, reeking of cheap alcohol, and every inch of his skin was tainted with the perfume of some strange woman.
As soon as Joey entered, he saw me sitting on the sofa, reading a book.
He grinned, opened his arms, and attempted to embrace me.
But this time, I calmly and deliberately pushed him away.
Is she throwing another tantrum? I really don't understand why this woman always acts like this over the smallest things.
This was Joey’s inner voice.
I didn’t know why, but I had unexpectedly awakened the ability to read minds.
Rory is so much gentle and considerate. I really can’t figure out why that damn old man could marry such a woman, while my fiancée only knows how to make unreasonable demands, and doesn’t understand how hard I work for us.
In an instant, my brain went blank, like an overloaded program starting to malfunction.
Rory is his deceased father's wife.
When his father married Rory, Joey was already twenty years old.
But Rory was only twenty-five at the time, just five years older than Joey.
At that time, he just said, "This is my stepmother."
Back then, I thought Rory's father was ridiculous, not knowing that Joey was even more perverted than his father.
He had long been eyeing his stepmother.
“Joey, why don’t you go take a shower first?” I said coldly, my gaze fixed on the kiss marks on his neck, which were not well hidden.
He didn’t notice my gaze or the coldness in my voice.
“Sorry, Elara,” he murmured. “For the family business, I had to attend those social events. Those businessmen always like to have women at the dinner table.”
“Don’t worry, I didn’t sleep with any of them. I know you’re my wife.”
He added, as if these words would soothe the bleeding wound in my heart.
I suddenly felt tired, not understanding this man who appeared gentle and reliable on the outside was actually dirty and ugly inside.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, forcing back the pain that was about to devour me.
But his thoughts didn’t stop.
Elara is really annoying, always doubting. Isn’t it normal for men to have a few lovers? Everyone does it.
But soon, I’ll be able to get rid of her. All I need to do is ambush a gunman in the church during our wedding and get rid of her.
Then I can blame it on the rival family, and not only will I get the coastal port from the Smith family, but I’ll be with Rory forever.
I suddenly looked up at him, but his expression remained calm, not even slightly flustered by the malicious thoughts I had just heard.
At that moment, the maid from the Rory House barged in.
“Mrs. Jones fainted!”
“I’ll be right there. Go call the doctor,” Joey said, immediately standing up.
Without waiting for my response, he walked toward the door.
The maid whispered something in his ear, but I couldn’t hear it.
However, his thoughts clearly entered my mind.
Rory is pregnant! This is great, I’m going to have a child.
I didn’t hesitate. I dialed a number I thought I would never dial in my life.
Nate Brown — the police chief of the American police department.
His father was also a politician in the U.S. government.
He used to be my first love, but this relationship never started.
I had to marry Joey for my family, to bring in more benefits.
“I’ll be having my wedding at the church next week, but I plan to find a new male lead. Would you like to come?”
I tried to keep my voice steady, not knowing what time would change.
The person on the other end didn’t hesitate: “Miss Elara, it would be my honor.”
