Chapter 4
The director called me into his office.
“Although the Pack Elders have confirmed you’re fit to return to work, our hospital can’t go against Rex,” he said with a sigh.
“Take some time off. Consider it a suspension for recovery.”
I understood his position. In a werewolf Pack, the Alpha or Alpha heir’s will was the law.
I didn’t argue. I took the newly prescribed medication and went home.
The moment I opened the door, I saw a pair of unfamiliar women’s shoes neatly arranged in the rack.
I let out a self-mocking laugh.
At Rex’s insistence, this villa had never been entered by anyone other than me and the scheduled cleaners.
Not even our pup.
The year we formed our Mate Bond, I became pregnant by accident.
But Rex refused, no matter what I said, to let me keep the child.
“I can’t tolerate something covered in blood and amniotic fluid existing in my house.”
“And I’ve never liked pups. You know that. I can’t even stand things touched by other wolves.”
As his breathing turned ragged and his body trembled, I tried desperately to calm him.
But in the struggle, I fell down the stairs.
The pup’s heartbeat stopped.
And I nearly died on the operating table from blood loss.
From that moment on, every time we fulfilled our monthly obligation, he would personally watch me swallow contraceptive pills.
Hearing the door, Poppy walked out.
She gently stroked her flat stomach, a smug smile on her lips.
“Calantha, I’m pregnant. You should already know that.”
“I don’t want my pup to be born illegitimate.”
She leaned closer, her tone almost cheerful.
“So, Calantha, we’re actually on the same side.”
“I want to become the Pack Luna. You want to break the Bond. We both get what we want.”
I let out a cold laugh.
“You’ve got it wrong. Wanting to end the Bond doesn’t mean I agree to you taking my place.”
“A third party will always be a third party.”
“You went from the father to the son—no matter how hard you try, you’ll never belong.”
My words clearly struck a nerve.
The smile vanished from her face, replaced by anger.
“Who do you think you are?” she snapped. “Can’t keep your man, so you take it out on me?”
“You really think Rex refuses to divorce you because he can’t bear to let you go? He just hasn’t finished preparing yet.”
“A man shows who he loves by who he’s willing to have a pup with.”
“Your pup? Even when you had it—he didn’t want it.”
She laughed wildly.
I froze where I stood.
This secret had been tightly buried within the GloomFall Pack.
They all knew it was my deepest wound—and they didn’t want such a scandal attached to the Alpha heir.
But Rex had told her so easily.
In my moment of shock, the medicine bottle slipped from my pocket and fell to the floor.
Poppy picked it up, glancing at the label, her expression turning even more mocking.
“What’s this? A werewolf aphrodisiac? You still haven’t given up on Rex?”
“As his Mate, you need drugs to keep him. How pathetic.”
I stared at her, hatred surging uncontrollably in my chest.
The next second, I twisted the cap open and tried to force the pills into her mouth.
“This is an abortifacient—prepared just for you.”
“You want to keep that pup? Let’s see if you even can.”
Her face turned deathly pale as she struggled violently.
Then—
the sound of the door opening came from behind us.
She broke free from my grip.
