Chapter 2

We'd been together for three years. We were college seniors, interning at the same major company, and the decisions about full-time offers were coming up.

We both wanted to stay, so we'd been working hard on our projects.

Our relationship had been steady, too. We shared a rented condo, and he'd already talked to his family about putting up a $450,000 down payment to buy it as our first home together.

I had a surprise for him myself. I was planning to tell him after we got our offers.

Just a week earlier, Ethan had grinned at me and said his biggest dream was to make me breakfast for the rest of our lives.

I couldn't make sense of this sudden change.

Was he really cheating? Did he want out but refuse to be the one to say it?

Or had he lost his mind and copied one of those awful proposal videos—pretending to cheat so the proposal afterward would be a bigger surprise?

Whatever it was, this was a terrible time for it.

While I was trying to figure it out, my computer froze for a second. Then a glitch brought up the messaging app Ethan had signed into to send himself some files before leaving.

Suddenly, everything made sense.
