Chapter 5

Eileen Barton smiled helplessly, but since she insisted so much, she nodded in agreement.

Anyway, kids’ minds change all the time. Maybe they’ll forget about it in a while.

But Teresa Barton had taken this matter to heart. Once the words were spoken, she was determined to see them through.

The mother and daughter had just returned to the country as well, so they hadn’t found a place to live yet. They would have to stay at Emily Church’s house for now.

By the time the three of them left the company, it was already dark, with the streets lit up brightly.

In the car, Theresa Barton saw a magazine. The man on the cover had a commanding presence, and his charm was evident even in the photograph, making it impossible to look away.

“Auntie, who is the uncle in this photo?”

Emily Church took a look at the magazine, then smiled. “This uncle is quite important. He’s Corey Bruce, the president of the Bruce Group. He’s appeared on the cover of several financial magazines. Nowadays, he’s a prominent figure at Stanford.”

“So amazing! Then I’ll let him be my father.”

Theresa Barton looked very serious, not like she was joking at all.

Eileen Barton, who was standing nearby, almost dropped her phone when she heard this. That man was of noble status, completely beyond her reach.

“Teresa, we don’t even know him. How can we say such things?”

Theresa Barton pouted, but her gaze remained firm, showing no signs of giving up.

“I don’t think it’s impossible at all, Theresa. You really need to keep trying.” Emily Church smiled and teased gently.

“What can a child say be taken seriously? Stop acting foolishly.”

Although she said that, Eileen Barton’s gaze couldn’t help but wander toward the man in the magazine.

I don’t know why, but I suddenly felt a sense of familiarity. But upon closer thought, if she knew such an excellent man, there’s no way she wouldn’t remember him at all.

  ……

After returning home, Emily Church arranged rooms for her and her daughter, then went to the study to deal with work-related matters.

Eileen Barton was packing her things in the room. She took the items out of her suitcase and arranged them neatly.

When Emily Church came out of the study, Teresa Barton was busy working on the computer. Some people curiously went over to take a look.

The person on the computer screen is Corey Bruce. There’s also a lot of information about him displayed beside his image.

Emily Church’s eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at Theresa Barton. “You really don’t mean to let him be your father, do you?”

“Of course, I keep my word.” Theresa Barton tilted her head slightly, looking very determined.

Emily Church shook her head helplessly. Although she knew it was impossible, she didn’t want to undermine the child’s confidence.

Not everyone has access to Corey Bruce, so let her learn the hard way by trying on her own.

“Then I won’t bother you anymore. Remember to drink milk.”

Emily Church placed the milk on the table. Before leaving, she took one last look at Corey Bruce in the photo.

She actually thought there was some resemblance between Corey Bruce and Theresa Barton’s features. But she quickly dismissed the idea. Corey Bruce wasn’t married and didn’t even have a girlfriend. How could he have children?

After Emily Church left, Theresa Barton found Corey Bruce’s email address online. She then drafted an email and sent it to him. Only after that did she go back to bed satisfied.

The next day.

Bruce Group President’s Office.

Cory Bruce stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing around as if every place his eyes fell upon was something he wanted to conquer.

His facial features were sharply defined, as if carved with a knife or axe. His amber-colored eyes exuded a sense of mystery. He had a high nose and thin lips.

The entire face is like a perfect work of art, with no flaws whatsoever.

Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows and illuminated him, making him appear like a deity, inspiring awe in those who saw him.

At that moment, assistant John Dale gently pushed the door open and placed all the documents in his hands on the table. “Mr. Bruce, these are all the documents related to the project you’re interested in. Some of them have also been sent to your email.”

“Hmm, got it.”

When Corey Bruce turned on his computer, he was surprised to find an unfamiliar email.

Normally, he would never open it casually, as his computer contained many confidential files. If a virus infected it, the losses could be severe.

But the email contained the name “Eileen Barton”. That immediately piqued his interest, and he prepared to click with the mouse.

“Mr. Bruce, this email has appeared in your inbox for no apparent reason. Let me investigate it first.”

John Dell has always been cautious, and it’s precisely because of this that he’s been able to stay and work alongside Corey Bruce.

“It doesn’t matter. I really want to see what she’s up to.”

Back then, after Corey Bruce left the hotel, he sent people to investigate Erin Barton’s background. Later, he found out that she had gone abroad, so he gradually forgot about the whole matter.

Now, since she’ve suddenly sent herself an email, it’s definitely piqued his interest.

Upon opening the email, what came to view were various photos of Eileen Barton and Theresa Barton from their daily lives. There was also a letter attached.

That letter was written by Teresa Barton. It expressed her desire for him to be her father. At the end, she also mentioned the time and place where they could meet.

After seeing all this, Corey Bruce couldn’t help but sneer, his eyes filled with disdain.

Back then, this woman went to great lengths to get into his bed. Years later, she came back to him with her child. What a scheming and calculating person she was.

She thinks she can just pick any kid and extort money from them? Forget it!

“Mr. Bruce, this child does bear a striking resemblance to you…”

John Dell frowned. All this time, he had only known that Corey Bruce had been with one woman. Could it really be true that he had a child with her?

Hearing this, Corey Bruce began to observe the child more closely. His nose and eyes were exactly like his own.

Suddenly, he felt something strange in his heart. He couldn’t explain why, but he really wanted to get closer to that child.

“Mr. Bruce, I’ll go to the technical department right now to further enhance the security of your computer.”

Just as John Dell was about to leave, Corey Bruce suddenly said, “Cancel today’s afternoon meeting. I need to go to Weiai Café.”

“Yes, I’ll arrange it right away.”

John Dell didn’t dare waste a single moment. He had never seen anything that could make Corey Bruce postpone a meeting.

  ……

Eileen Barton stretched out contentedly. It was the best night’s sleep she’d had in ages.

She turned her head toward Teresa Barton beside her and immediately frowned. “What’s wrong?”

“Mom, my stomach hurts.”

Teresa Barton appeared extremely pale, with her hands pressed against her stomach. Her forehead was covered in sweat, and she looked very exhausted.

“How long has this been going on?” Eileen Barton looked guilty. She hadn’t even known her child was sick, and yet she had slept so soundly.
